Anyone else waiting for the floods to come?

We're right on the Juniata River and my WeatherBug has been going off non-stop all night. According to the one link posted, we are the darkest blue circle. At least we're not in the black area. According to another link, it looks like we're getting much more rain tomorrow as well.

It doesn't take much to flood our town though and the bad thing about it is, when we flood, there is no way in or out. If there are any emergencies, patients have to be brought in via the railroad tracks; by train, then transferred to an awaiting ambulance to get to the hospital. Either that, or choppers, and we're a small town so most are brought in via the railroad.

It doesn't take much to flood our town though and the entire town has flooded 3 times or so in the past 10 years. I'd imagine that's what we'll be facing tomorrow.

We are in the Phila suburbs and the flooding could be the worst in a century (or so they say). We are pretty lucky that we don't live near a body of water but our streets get pretty backed up. Our stone fireplace sprung a leak and it trickled into our built in curio cabinet :sad2: . I know DH will be out working tonight.

C'mon over my house! We are dry!

They are saying 3 - 6 inches tomorrow... and if we just go another 31 days we can match Noah's Ark!

they are already here in southern coastal delaware.

though we don't get the press because we are not "cool" (thank God)

DD is living in Carlisle (just for the summer) and says that there is standing water on many of the streets. Fortunately, there are no major bodies of water in town. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Riverfront in Harrisburg for her graduation last month, and I suspect that's one of the areas being evacuated. We walked along the river and we were definitely below flood level. (It was marked on the bridge pilings)

The Schuylkill River here in Reading has risen to over 20 feet, expected to reach some 27 feet by this afternoon. It will be the second highest flood in the city's history. Only Hurricane Agnes caused a greater flood of 31 feet. I'm on the eastern side of the city, near My. Penn and the Pagoda, so hopefully I won't be troubled too much by it up here at the higher elevation.

Our emergency sirens have been going off all morning. The Schuylkill River runs right through our town. My brother's deck is on the Schuylkill :sad2: Obviously, he (and the others on his avenue) have a mandatory evacuation order.

DH was unable to go to work this morning. Nobody is allowed in or out of our little town right now.

Kids will be sad that day camp has been cancelled. But I am sure we will be getting a house full of people soon (friends and family members that live along the river or in the danger zones). That should cheer them up.

Weird day today. We will try to make the best of it.

We have sunshine this morning! :sunny: Did they say when it's supposed to crest? I took a picture of the Lehigh River this morning on my way in. Driving down the highway the water is about a foot from reaching the road. It's normally about 5-6 feet from the road. :sad2: I feel so bad for all the people who have water in their homes. This is horrible.

iNTeNSeBLue98 Is Agnes the one that flooded Knoebel's with about 6 feet of water?

ETA: Just heard it's not supposed to crest until tomorrow.

Yes, in 1972.

Listening to the traffic reports on the radio, it's very difficult to navigate around the city of Reading. 422 has been shut down as the river has begun flooding the roadway between Route 12 & Penn Street.

I am in Royersford - just south of Pottstown. I could not get to work through Chester County (RT 23 area) - the French Creek overflowed and many roads are closed. I came back home to work - what a mess. The Schuylkill is to crest tonight - it is to the top of the bridge here.

I'm in Easton and while it was ok driving into NJ this morning (took me 2 1/2 hours to get to work). The river at flood stage is 22 ft- it is supposed to go to almost 39 feet by midnight tonight. Fortunately, we live 400 feet up so our home is ok but I don't know how we are going to get home as all the roads leading there are flooded and/or closed. Work is not very sympathetic either. This is the 3rd time in less than 3 years that this has happened. :confused3

Our local news is wfmz.com for more info- I just feel terrible for all the homes and businesses that are going through this yet again just as they were starting to reopen.

I can not believe the videos of Reading that they are showing on the news. The water is up to the bottoms of the street signs. I feel so bad for the people whose homes & businesses are affected.
And 150-200,000 people in Wilkes Barre!!?? I thought for sure that I read that wrong on the news website today, I thought maybe it was supposed to say 2000. That is just incomprehensible.
We are so lucky to have gotten away with just a little water in the basement.
I have been watching WGAL news, www.wgal.com.

I took some pictures in Pittston this morning. Six or seven of our Luzerne County branches of my bank were closed and the first I heard this morning was that our branch in Shavertown had a flooded basement and the drive in that stands away from the branch had about a foot of water in it. So far, that's been the worst for my employer. We've been lucky to not take on water during the torential rains.

This is on the Pittston side of the Susquehanna River looking toward West Pittston/Exeter.

We were standing near Cooper's Waterfront Restaurant. This one is looking toward Old Forge.

You can't tell from this, but the water had already made it over the railroad tracks.

This one shows a huge tree trunk being taken down the river.

They said on the news just a few minutes ago that there will be a double crest because of the rainfall that NY had, too. So, one crest has happened already around here. The next will happen tomorrow.

Hope all of you are well and dry!

They are talking about doing evacuations in some areas :guilty:

As a resident of New Orleans all I can say is good luck and EVACUATE if they tell you to. Don't mess around, flood water can be more powerful than you can imagine. (from someone who's seen houses on top of cars)

DH went out between 8pm and 9pm to see the flood waters of the Schuylkill River in Reading PA.

OMG. Is Penn Street near Vanity Fair? It's ringing a bell for some reason. I hope they evacuated before all that happened.

Here in Virginia we're under a state of emergency! Stay safe everyone!

Governor Kaine declares statewide emergency due to recent weather

For Immediate Release
June 28, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today declared a statewide emergency, directing state agencies to take all necessary actions to aid in the recovery from flooding, mudslides and potential tornadoes that have affected the Commonwealth since June 23rd.

"Many people and businesses in Virginia have suffered losses
from the recent severe weather," Governor Kaine said. "State
disaster response agencies, including the Departments of
Emergency Management, State Police and Transportation, are
continuing to assist Virginians who have been impacted. We will
also continue to work with local governments to aid in their
response and recovery efforts."

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) will work
with local governments to assess damage in the affected areas.
Initial damage estimates will be shared as soon as they are
available.

As of this morning, more than 225 roads were closed statewide
due to flooding. Additional road closures and localized flooding
are possible as river and stream levels continue to rise from
flood waters moving downstream.
