Anyone else underwhelmed by the poly?

When I 1st saw the plans for the poly I was extremely excited! new buildings, bungalows, and a new huge pool! Couldn't wait to see how Disney was going to pull this one off. Well now that they have scaled back to converting an older building and bungalows look so small.

I'm just not feeling it anymore.. I'm not impressed by the location of the bungalows. I think having a little height, like from the BLT or higher floors at the VGF is much better for viewing.. Also will they be fixing the speakers at the poly? Last time we were watching the fireworks from the beach you could only hear the music if you stood right on the top of the speaker. Maybe they will have new speakers on the bungalows?

The Poly resort just doesn't do it for us. I'm sure that we will stay there as DVC members a couple of times if available.

If we were cash Poly fans, I would be upset with the obstructed views now created by the bungalows and the reduced inventory caused by DVC taking over existing buildings.

Apparently Disney likes the money from DVC sales more that the money from cash CRO bookings.

These are the old plans... New plans only have Tahiti house converted and the bungalows. Which now go around the little peninsula and take over half the beach in front of the old resort pool.

I think Disney should have left the bungalows on the right side close to transportation center..
I don't think they are going to be as popular as Disney thinks they will be..
At the VGF board, there are already people saying that they can hear the horns from the boats starting at 7am!
Can only imagine what will be like from the bungalows..

I'm thinking there are going to be a lot of categories for this resort by the looks of this picture.

The only thing bothering me is the monorail lurkers

Exactly. I am just not excited at all but the Poly was never our fave.

FYI, that WAS a past, grand plan.

But the current plan is much smaller

These were the OLD plans..
The new ones have ONLY the bungalows and converted building...

As Lorilais_mommie pointed out in her post, the drawing is out-of-date. The plans have undergone a number of changes since they first appeared on the internet. The latest plans call for 20 bungalows that stretch from Hawaii's beach, around Sunset point, to Tahiti's beach. Three Poly longhouses are being converted to DVC vacation homes: Tahiti, Tokelau, and Rapu Nui, which are all on the east side of the resort closest to the Ticket and Transportation Center. To my knowledge, there no plans to build a big new pool as shown in the drawing.

For me, I'll wait until I see the finished Poly DVC before I form an opinion. I remember when Aulani was under construction there were several posts from people complaining about Aulani's location. Some said Aulani was on the wrong side of the wrong island. Although there may be some truth in those opinions, Aulani has turned out to be a pretty good resort.

Give the Poly DVC some time and we'll see how it turns out.

DH and I were married at Poly and we were totally on board to add on when the plans first came out. Now fast forward to the latest plans and I am not feeling the need to add on at Poly anymore. I thnk the bugalows are an awful idea. What was once a resort with beautiful views and a wonderful tropical open feel now appears cramped and overshadowed by all those bungalows. I know change is inevitable and my one opinion is just that one. But I really think all the plan changes are going to impact the potential sales DVC makes.

On a happier side DH and I own at VGF and he agreed when we do our vow renewal instead of Poly we would do it at our home resort.

Admittedly I never visited the Poly in the 70s or 80s so I'm lacking the nostalgic attachment many feel. Visiting now, it doesn't strike me as a 21st century hotel property for which I'd be willing to pay hundreds of dollars per night.

Some people want the hotel to remain frozen in time. Others would never dream of staying there because it appears so horribly out of date. Here's hoping Disney can strike the proper balance to satisfy both crowds.

I, too, will reserve judgement until I see the finished product, but I am concerned with what the outcome will be.

• I feel that they went overboard on the total # of bungalows being built. I feel that they should have limited the construction of bungalows to the right (east) side of Sunset Point. The beach area will have an entirely different look and feel, and I think the views of MK / Contemporary are going to be shot.
  
• I know this is like beating a dead horse, but I am still not over the removal of the waterfall / garden inside the GCH. I really hope the outcome is better than my current expectations, but I can not see how they will "top" what they had before. I understand the ongoing maintenance issues that the water feature presented, but something could have been done to strike a "happy medium".
  
• I'm not sure why the "T"-shaped towers were decided against. This model seems to have worked well at other sites (BLT, VGF, WL). I could understand scaling back from two to one tower, but I'm really shocked that this was scrapped completely.

Despite my gripes, there are some things that I am excited about (the new pool and Trader Sams in particular. Again, I will pass judgement until I see the finished product, but will remain "concerned" until that point.

According to people I've spoken with, there were a couple of primary reasons that played into the decision:

1) More rooms places greater stress on resort amenities. We're talking front desk, bell services, parking, theme park transportation (including shared monorail line), pool, dining, housekeeping...right on down the line. Keeping the same resort footprint--with only the bungalows as an addition--means those services can largely remain as-is. More rooms would have required additions, which comes at a higher cost. And there were also logistical concerns regarding how much can they really expand the pool, parking, transport, etc. without harming the entire area.

Consider the complaints about VGF being added to the SSL beach...now magnify those complaints for 2 DVC Poly towers.

2) The other big factor was the reality that many longtime Poly fans will buy DVC points. That moves many die-hards from cash bookings to DVC points. If the Poly were to have maintained the same number of cash guest rooms, Disney would have had to work harder to fill those rooms. "Working harder" is code for lower rates / discounting.

Meanwhile demand was bound to be lessened by the loss of beach space that would have accompanied not only the bungalows but two multi-story villa towers.

By taking the cash hotel down to 60% of its original size, Disney can continue to demand high prices for those rooms.

All of that said, DVC can always revisit the towers at a later date. That option will never be truly off the table.

Same here. I've never really been interested in staying at the Poly, though I do enjoy meals at Kona.

As a family with growing sons, we stayed in the Poly more than any other resort. That was in the '70 and '80's! However, now it is not as attractive to us as the other DVC resorts. However, I am not ruling out trying to stay there.
