Anyone else think that "hunker down" is a funny word?

Not that there's anything funny about a hurricane, but the term "hunkering down" makes me giggle. It just doesn't sound like something formal enough for a reporter to use on the air.

I think I have a problem in general with words that start with "hunk". When I was in high school, people were reading their papers aloud in my English class. One guy used the word "hunky dory" in his paper, and I almost fell on the floor laughing. :rotfl2: I had to bury my head in my arms on my desk and bite my lips.

No, but I'm a Georgia Bulldog fan. :teeth:

I don't find anything funny about it, but it does become incredibly irritating after hearing it for the one millionth time!

I don't know--but we heard it lots of times last year....X 4

ETA: The term "hunk" makes me laugh---I never understood of it as a descriptor for a good looking guy. I think of "(c)hunk of cheese"--and just don't get comparing a hot guy to Velveeta. :teeth:

Hey, Those are beautiful words!!! HUNKER DOWN HAIRY DAWGS!!!!

We hear it here when there is going to be a Noreaster, or Snow storm! They also will say Batten Down The Hacket..... :rotfl:

"Hunker down" is running neck and neck with "ride it out" as the most over-used phrase of the day. But I think "soup bowl" is the winner. Although some anchors have started calling New Orleans a "cereal bowl" for variety's sake.

I like it. It rolls well. Hunker down is fun to say too. so is hunkydory.

Right up there with "holed up" - how do they come up with these terms?

I made a joke on the other thread that CNN was reporting that "hunkered/hunkering down" was the most overused phrase of the past 36 hours.

I don't think i have ever heard of "hunker down" before.
:rotfl: You must not be from the South. I've heard it all my life. Maybe its a regional term???? Sounds perfectly normal to me.

anybody remember that ad?

"I hanker for a hunka, a slab, a slice, a chunka
I hanker for a hunka cheese!"
