Okay...so to preface this...I am not one of those people to overanalyze...and LOVE EVERYTHING Disney...so this came to a shock to me as well. Took my 8-year-old boys to see Cars 2 last night. Didn't even think to read reviews as we loved the first Cars...and come on...not only is it Disney...it's animated.

I found myself a bit disturbed with the opening seen....something out of an adult action movie ending in gun fire and "Kill Him" more than once in the movie. Really?!? Let's also not forget I believe most of the Cars 1 fans are older toddlers....they just love Tow Mater and Lightning McQueen. So not only was the violence inappropriate for kids under 10 I believe, but so was the story which went way over their heads and at time was a bit too much for me to digest. I won't go on and on. I'm sure this will get heated up and many will disagree...not my intention and I'm fine with all opinions. I just found myself surprised, and a bit dissapointed for the first time with Disney :(

Wow, with that review, i will have to see it for myself.
So i can't really offer much of an opinion. But, I hope it's not that bad!

You know, I can't recall what scene it was.. but it was somewhere near the start of the movie and it is indicated that a car dies from something. I do remember both DH and I looking at eachother kind of like "Well that was a bit much". Obviously I wasn't too upset as I can't recall the details but I do remember the distinct impression that one of the scenes was unnecessary.

It was completely different from the original. Yes lots of guns, explosions, things I could only compare to mob-like activity (killing them from the inside...wth was that?). No feel good fluffies, nothing that moved me.

I saw Cars in the theater 7 times....7 times. I saw Cars 2 once and you couldn't pay me to see it again. I just kept zoning out in boredom, and my 7 year old dd could barely follow the storyline.

I have heard the same from other moms, but we didn't go see it. I'm glad you posted this though because I think we'll skip this movie now. We already have trouble with DD saying she is going to "kill" whoever she's mad at. She's only 4 and doesn't understand what it means.

BTW I also heard someone say they used the Rhianna song "Shut up and drive" - not really the best song choice for a kids movie!

My seven year old son was fine with it.:3dglasses

Now Transformers.........lol! ;)popcorn::

Honestly, Disney films are a lot more violent than you might gloss them over to be. All of the classics are filled with murder, cruelty, death, and some very scary things. Just look at Snow White, Pinnochio, The Lion King, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Tangled, Pirates of the Carribean, or insert just about any Disney film. I bet you could find a line of dialogue from most any of them where someone alluded to or directly intimated a desire to kill another character.

There's a lot violence and conflict in Disney's stories, we just largely overlook it because it seems so sanitized. I just understand going in that the bad is there for a discernment to be made between good and evil. :thumbsup2

I didn't think it was overly violent, but the storyline was a tad confusing. My 7 year old didn't quite understand the story, but loved it anyway. We would see it again, and will definitely be buying it. :)

I actually don't remember hearing that at all during the movie, but I wasn't looking for it, ya know? But I honestly don't even remember the last time I heard that song, haha.

Yeah I've heard a lot of poor reviews of the movie. The storyline isn't as great and there is supposedly a poorly veiled political message also. I haven't seen it but that really puts me off. Don't tell me what to think... just entertain me.

I liked the first cars... not my favorite movie but cute enough that I'd watch it if it's on but I'm definitely not feeling the pull to see this one in any hurry.

I agree. I took my 3.5DS and was suprised with all the violence considering there was none in Cars.

i havent seen it yet so i cant comment on the scene, but my 7 year old has been watching Pirates Of the Carribean since he was 2.5 yrs old, so im sure we wont find it too violent for our kids.. 99% of cartoons are violent.. I grew up watching Tom adn Jerry blow eachothers heads off with guns and looney tunes, blowing up from drinking exploding poison etc... we just teach your kids the difference between fiction and reality, its just what works for us.. not knocking anyone who doesnt allow their kids to watch cars or anything though..

I agree, the beginning of Nemo, I had to skip over the scene when the shark attacks for years it upset my son. Same with the Lion King which as an adult I found to be very violent!! Cars 2 was very James Bond-like, and yes there was some violence. Cars was a far better movie than Cars 2, but I went into it not expecting to like it nearly as much as the first (and I didn't). Was it terrible...NO. I should add that I am a parent that HATES guns and explosions of any kind, my boys aren't even allowed to have water or nurf guns, and I didn't think it was all that bad.

I took my son to see Cars 2, as he loves Cars, he is 3. We didn't think it was so violent it was inappropriate for children under 10. He never commented on anything, but seeing Mater and Lightening again. Also loved that the other cars were there too! DS laughed at Mater (loves him), and was engaged the entire movie. Not sure if he understood the story line, but, he loved the movie.

In all honesty, I think there's a bit of violence in all Disney movies, for example, look at the way Ursala is "killed" in The Little Mermaid, Eric drives a boat mast through her stomach, in Sleeping Beauty, it's a sword, in The Rescuers, it's a crocodile, and the list goes on. I think the only non violent film out there is Pooh, unless you would count bees :)

IMO, the way we approach the subject, should it come up, would be, remind your kids, it's a cartoon, it's not real. I come from the generation that grew up watching Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes. You really can't get more violent than that, in a child's cartoons. That said, I grew up watching that and turned out just fine, with a child that enjoys watching the cartoons I watched at his age, (Yay for Boomerang!) and I know he will turn out fine too. :flower3:

this one always made me wonder why they had to have the hunter going to cut her heart out and bringit back in a box lol creepy!!! lol

I do agree with the OP - we saw it on Friday and DD (age 11 but a sensitive soul) kept saying (during the movie) "I can't believe how violent this is". I think she really didn't like the part where the 2 cars "died" (one squashed the other one basically fried/ blown up) - also the emphasis on taking out the cars upset her.

It was nothing like the original. I do understand they wanted to change things and it's a fun premise but we were surprised by how much we didn't like the movie.

We own the first Cars but won't buy this one.

I'm pretty conservative about what my kids watch, and I honestly had no problem with the movie- I didn't think it was more violent than other disney- or other in general cartoons. My kids really enjoyed it, and thought it was funny. I liked the lessons about loyalty and friendship, but I have to say, what I really loved was the part with Sig Hansen from the Northwestern:lovestruc love me the deadliest catch tie in;)

Didn't see it. No plan on seeing it. Didn't like the first one. The entire concept of the second one looked dumb.

I agree, it was pretty violent, but gosh, How could you not be happy for Mater? He ended up with a Hot Girlfriend. Hotter than Sally (Lightining's Girlfriend).

Just Sayin.....

We saw it over the weekend. Our youngest is 8 so the "violence" didn't bother me. I think the storyline missed its mark. It will go right over the head of its target audience. That being said, I am a licensed child care provider & was talking with a couple of the moms. They said their kids (2, 3, & 4) all liked it but didn't know anything about the storyline. They were just excited by the familiar charactes & the racing scenes.
