Anyone Else Not Like New Orleans?

I'm scratching my head at the comments that food in NOLA is expensive, we think it's some of the best, reasonably priced food we've ever had, and we travel a lot.

Can't believe no one mentioned The Cats Meow, a very fun karaoke bar, we needed up there 3 out of our 4 night trip.

You started a thread to gather folks together to discuss all the reasons you all don't like Nola . I would say that is bashing . You could have easily posted about Who doesn't like basil , or Who doesn't like to vacation with other folks because you end up doing things you don't want to do .

The focus on alcohol consumption and rowdiness has ruined New Orleans and Las Vegas for me.

The focus on alcohol consumption is only the focus if you want it to be-there are a ton of fun things to do in New Orleans that have nothing to do with drinking (in fact, I was three months pregnant the last time we went so there NO alcohol on the agenda for me).

And funny thing is a few others have posted they didn't like it either and wouldn't go back, but I don't see them being attacked. What do you care of the OP didn't like NO? It's not like she's taking an ad out in a national publication warning others stay away. Talk about over reacting.

No one is over reacting , no names were called , no one is yelling or even rolling eyes : ) including me lol ...it just a discussion, nothing like a good old heated over the top working moms vrs stay home moms or spanking thread that we see on here LOL.

I've never been there. Maybe if I went, I'd change my mind. But New Orleans holds no appeal for me.

Drunks don't surprise, shock, impress or interest me. Don't like burnt or spicy food. Architecture is unappealing. Not a fan of jazz.

Never saw anything that made me want to visit the place.

I don't hate New Orleans. Just have no interest in going there. And maybe if I have to go there one day, I'll end up liking it! I just wouldn't go unless I had to.

You're right, you probably shouldn't go. You've made up your mind about a lot of things you wouldn't like, so no need to go. I have no desire to go back to NYC (been there, done that) so can understand every place does not appeal to everybody.

I expect drunks can be found in most cities, but they don't stand out in the daytime in NOLA. Also, really don't understand the burnt food comment, have never had burned food there - now spicey, oh yeah I cook like that all the time.

Wonder why we might be a tad sensitive ? Same reason those hit by Sandy I think might be if we start a thread about all the reasons we dislike Long Island .

Nola, like every city in America has it's faults, those that live in the area will admit that for sure.

The Quarter absolutely can be stinky and sticky in summer LOL...and yup you are going to see drunks, more so at night but if you are in the Quarter, you might run across some during day too .

I think the point to our responses is that the OP barely scratched the surface of what there is do to .. i'm not even sure she scratched lol.

Funny thing , we don't like burnt food either, thank goodness for all the amazing chefs here that take pride in their work and don't try to feed us burnt food Can't help you on the spicy .... we like things well seasoned ,but not something that over powers the awesome flavors of our area. I don't want to sweat and cry while eating either, and really have never had that experince in any restaurant nor do I cook that way . Some folks just cant handle even the slightest seasoning , so in that case, the food here won't appeal to everyone .

I'm going to tell a stupid story on myself, did you know that until I went to NOLA, and my husband ordered something blackened, that I thought this meant they cooked it until it was burned on the outside ...

That said, I loved NOLA the 2 times we've been, and want to go back but will wait until the kiddos are a bit older. We had the very best scallop appetizer at Pat O'Briens ever, I still can taste how well it was seasoned if I think about it!

Our second trip was when I was about 5 months pregnant with our DS. We ended up standing in the to-go line at Cafe Dumond to get begniets and hot chocolate, because there was no way on earth we were going to wait the 2 to 2 1/2 HOURS to get a table, and ended up having a wonderfully awesome waiter walk by just as I was stretching my back and ask me what my order was so he could run and get it for me. He was so nice! The ghost tour was amazing, I got goose bumps so many times!

OK, note to self, gotta go back and have another hurricane!

When you can go to a nationally award winning restaurant in a sundress, your DH in shorts, and pay less than $100 for two people for a good meal. . .you're in New Orleans!

That was our experience. Try that in Boston! Nola is a different animal entirely. I guess that this is why I can see some loving it and some hating it. I started basil on salads after our first visit. And can't wait to go back next January instead of our usual disney trip. That will be different because my BFF moved back down there this summer and we will be touring with locals.

On an aside, really a disney boar complaining about food prices at a tourist destination? It costs us $80 to feed cs to my crew at disney! And our dinner at raglan road was $400!

We did spend some time at The Cat's Meow. It was early so the karaoke host, and a girl that used to work there, were doing most of the singing and they were great. But. My stomach was starting to pitch and roll (from the basil covered salad) so I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have had I felt fine.

I still don't get why you keep saying I'm "bashing" NO. There were several things in my OP that I made good comments on, why don't those count with you?

And I can totally understand some people not enjoying Michigan. Heck, I live here and there are things I don't like about my state either (Detroit for one ). And I never said I didn't like Louisiana. I wouldn't mind exploring more of the state as I'm sure it has a lot of other GREAT things to offer. I just didn't care for NO, why does that bother you so much?

I love New Orleans. Unfortunately, I don't get to visit anymore since my sister moved from Slidell.

Now it is not for everyone, but there is so much to do. I liked everything folks have mentioned, and the zoo is fabulous.

Beignets, po boys, Hurricanes, pralines, are all good things to try. I am surprised no one mentioned muffulettas.

If someone said it sucked, maybe. BUT...If someone said that they didn't like x or y or z about it...I wouldn't jump to it being bashing, just different strokes. Exactly what the OP was.

It bothers me because this is my home. You came here and didnt even bother to research any of the good touristy things, ate at some off the wall places and didnt do anything that screams "New Orleans" and then you talk on a public message board about what a terrible experience you had. If I went to NYC and hung out in a back alley in Brooklyn and then said "wow, I hate NYC" that would not really be fair since I didnt really "do" NYC. And I would fully expect people who knew better to come on here and tell me about it. Maybe one day you can try to do the city by yourself, without others who dont want to do that same things as you or who sway you to leave places that you really want to see. Do some research, do lots of touristy things, talk to some locals and really soak in the city.

I like it but only as a single person that likes to party I don't consider it a family friendly place at all really and it would not be on the list at all for a family vacation IMO. Now a guys trip to party, absolutely. I do like it all in all, I just think its very neat and unique its almost like going to another planet, I like to watch all the freaks on Bourbon, but that's just me.
