Anyone else not care for microfiber furniture?

I'm shopping for furniture and EVERYTHING is either microfiber or leather.

It is hard to find traditional upholstery anymore.

Is it totally out or something??

I am just not a fan of microfiber and the way you can play tic tac toe on it with your fingers :rotfl:

:lmao:

My family room has leather and my basement has microfiber.

I don't really like microfibre either, but I do have a recliner that has a vinyl composite fabric that looks like leather with more of a fabric feel - sort of like microfibre without the tic tac toe abilities. When we shopped for it, we entertained ourselves writing "Hi" on all the microfiber furniture.

I don't like leather or microfiber either. We had to custom order our furniture to get what we wanted.

I'll never get microfiber again! Our sofa -- a huge sectional monstrosity -- is a light tan in color and it looked horrible after a year. Anywhere it got dirty, it turned BLACK and I have never been able to clean it properly. :furious:

My sister bought a velour sofa that has held up wonderfully. She's had that sofa through two of ours. I used to think it looked cheap, but not so much anymore.

I love my microfiber. I've had it since about October and with two medium/large dogs it's still perfectly clean! Maybe it has to do with the color -- it's like a colonial blue.

That's exactly why I don't like it either. I really don't need my kids "writing" on the furniture. It would drive me insane to be constantly smoothing it out. :teeth:

DH had bought a coffee colored microfiber couch and love seat with pub backs a year before we started dating. When we moved in together, my furniture ended up making a departure (insert funny but long story here).

I hated the pub backs and especially the microfiber. His explanation for the pub backs is that you can lift them to vacuum. Hello, if you can't lift them, you don't NEED to vacuum. The microfiber wore away where he'd normally sit within three years. I was never so happy to wield a sawzall to DESTROY the microfiber sofa when we bought the new furniture.

Now, ask me about my leather furniture. I LOVE this stuff! It's very comfy and easy to clean. Youngest got sick on my sofa a week after we got it. All I had to do was get the Mr.Clean and wipe it up. We'd have been ticked if it'd been a traditional fabric.

I agree about the microfiber, but I like leather. I have a velvet/velour type fabric on my sofa. It has held up pretty well over the past five years. I got it at Haverty's. If you have a Haverty's or a Thomasville store near you, you can find upholstery fabrics on their sofas.

We purchased a low nap Microfiber couch/loveseat a year ago. The color is a coffee brown, and it still looks brand new. According to the salesman the low nap wears gently and is much easier to clean. So far we have been happy with the purchase.

Go higher end -- there's zero microfiber in the good stuff. You'll also see traditional good shapes that you'll still like 20 years from now instead of some of the weird stuff in Rooms to Go.

Buy good quality and you'll have it the rest of your life. Just reupholster every few years. My couch will be passed down when I die, and the kids will probably fight over it!

We had a microfiber and the seams constantly pulled out. We had it repaired half a dozen times before we gave up. It was terrible. And it was hard to keep clean.

We've now got leather in the family room (came from Macy's) and upholstery in the living room and den. The leather sofa is a year and a half old and still looks brand new. You can get upholstered furniture at La-Z-Boy and Ethan Allen. It takes about six weeks for the pieces to come in. Ethan Allen is a bit more expensive, but will last forever. My mom still has the Ethan Allen sofa she bought when she got married 50 years ago. It's been reupholstered a couple times, but the frame and springs are original.

I fully expect that in 30-35 years when we sell this home and downsize for our retirement, we will still have the Ethan Allen furniture we've put into it, and it will still be in excellent condition. The rest of the furniture I expect will be put to the curb--some long before then.

Oh--and a bit off topic, but one thing I did and I'm very glad of was to get glass cut to fit over the top of some of my wood furniture that I thought might get a bit of "traffic." It's easy to clean and I don't need to worry about scratches. :) It was fairly inexpensive when compared to the cost of replacing damaged furniture.

they have REALY nice couches at bassett furniture direct. there should be a stand alone bassett store near you...we got our sectional with TRADITIONAL upholstery @ 4 yrs ago and we love it! it even has a chase lounger! you can pick from hundreds of swatches, they have grades from 1-4, with 4 being the toughest and strongest. we got a 3 which is a nice hunter green chenile blend, tough as nails! i did not see a lot of micro when we were there recently shopping for our kitchen set......it seems as if the more " discount" places love to push the micro.... i've seen a sofa adv. for 399 in micro....but at this price i seem to think it must not be of good quality b/c of the low price.... they way i see it is that if you do go for a low price micro, at least you can get a new couch every couple of yrs due to the low price!! BTW for our sectional, we paid @ 2000.00 but it will last & last

The microfiber feel just gives me the heebiejeebies ****<shudders>****
And I'm with you....I would go nuts trying to smooth it out all the time. And I can see DH and DD playing tictactoe on it daily. I'd have to kill them and I don't look good in prison stripes :rotfl2:

We've had our microfiber living room set (chaise lounge, love seat & sofa) for a couple of years now. We like it fine, it's not bad to clean. One thing I've noticed is the static buildup, seems to be something we never had to deal with on regular fabric upholstery.

I like leather...but don't really like the smell.

Also, my kids are both creeped out by sitting on "dead cow skin".

I guess I just need to pay more and/or get custom. I was hoping to find something under 1k.

I already have family room furniture, it would be for a more formal sitting area.

We had a HUGE problem with Bassett. They didn't deliver our mattress when they said they would, and then they delivered the wrong one. Then the wrong one again. They stood us up the forth delivery date (again). And the fifth try they finally got it right. They made a lot of promises and a lot of excuses, and it was always someone elses's fault. We'd never do business with them again.

Hmmm, mine has no "smell".

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find anything of reasonably good quality in that price range. Although the Laz-Z-Boy sofa we bought--and we chose the upholstery from hundreds of designs and fabrics, was only a bit over that, and it's a sleeper. So that might be a place to check.
