Anyone else new to Outlander?

I have only watched the first two seasons as it plays on Netflix up here, and season three hasn't loaded yet. I love that it is so graphic, sexually and in other content.

I slowed down a bit in season two because suddenly Claire's voice became nails on a chalkboard for me.:drinking1Which was strange because at first I thought "what a lovely voice".

Unfortunately I caught the last episode of season three on another channel and didn't look away. It's going to be weird to work backwards on that season.

Haha! Thank you for the suggestion! I'll keep it in mind! (Not much of a novel reader; more of a news junkie or informational type book reader. I also don't generally watch a lot of TV!)

While I'm not sure I could live without books, I'm also addicted to audio books as well (while I'm driving, folding laundry, etc). I read (and loved) the entire Outlander series in print, and then on a whim, began listening to the books on audio as well. It was an entirely new experience! Davina Porter narrates the series and is absolutely incredible in giving life to the characters. When I read the books in print, I didn't really do justice (in my head) to the characters' accents. Anyway, even if you don't "read", I suggest listen-reading so that you can get the details that are not in the series.

I've considered subscribing to Starz for Outlander alone.
But I have a very distinct picture of the characters from the books. I'm kinda afraid the tv series will ruin it, not sure why?

Lol, I subscribe to Starz just for Outlander! I guess I need to pause my subscription until the series resumes. I was *exactly* like you - really afraid that seeing the characters in person would mess with the visions that I had in my head, but it really hasn't. I love seeing the gorgeous scenery and hearing the music - it doesn't really replace my in-my-head version of the books, it just sort of supplements it. Most of the characters are pretty similar, but there are a few that are different. Claire, for example: on-screen Claire is tall, willowy, and pretty serious. "My" Claire is shorter, more voluptuous, and a lot more friendly and easy-going. Screen Claire doesn't replace "my" Claire in my head. On a better note - Jaime on screen is waaaay hotter than the one I envisioned! That alone is a reason to watch. ;)

I had the same should-I or shouldn't-I dilemma with Game of Thrones. I'm glad I watched, but it doesn't really replace my "book visions."

Thanks, that's a great idea! And I agree about Jamie! :lovestruc

My husband loves it! And has read all the books. We are going on the westbound transatlantic Disney Cruise in sept and are flying in early to go to Scotland to visit outlander sites before the cruise. The first morning we arrive we are driving directly to High Clere castle where Downton Abbey was filmed. It’s the last day the castle is open for the year. And before we get on the ship in Dover we are going to Dover castle and tunnels which have been featured in a number of movies.

I had the same misgivings and while I’m not sorry I watched the series, it’s not exactly “must see TV” for me. None of the characters act, look like, or sound like they do in my mind’s eye. The show writers sacrifice or change elements of the books for the unnecessary addition of new scenes or details. I enjoy the scenery but that’s about it.

While I know other book readers enjoy the TV series, I’m sticking with the books from here on out.

I have a love/hate relationship with the books and series. I could care less about the sex stuff, I just want a good story. Some of the doctoring Claire improvised is audacious and very McGuyver, so that always garners some eyerolls. But I am still interested in learning what happens in her time-travelling adventures! Visually speaking, Jaime's back looks very fake, so I could definitely see less of that.

I am very "old" to Outlander as I read Outlander the year it came out. I was 24, just about the same age as Jamie when the story starts, and now I'm 51. I've read the entire book series many times over.

I very much enjoy the television series - I think it's incredibly well done. If you like the series, I would definitely recommend the books (even in audio version if you are not one for long books). Read the book after you watch the show, and it will really enrich your Outlander experience.

I was really into it a few years ago, and I thought with all the research and historical accuracy (a dealbreaker in "Historical Fiction" for him) that my DH would like it... plus there would be that "fun fantasy" element as he is also a Scotsman... ;) ;) ;)

But nope, he found out there was time travel with no good scientific explanation, and that was The End. Mentioning it gets a huge eyeroll and a comment about Harlequin romance novels. Utterly ruined it all for me. Now I can't even pick up a copy of a book without feeling awkward and knowing that I cannot share anything about it with DH, which kills the enjoyment for me. :(
