Anyone else having troubles with Wells Fargo??

so far i have only had one minor problem with wells fargo. they cashed a check i wrote for $20 more than it was, well really the other bank did. when i caught it and called the lady tried to question my handwriting based off the grainy digital scanned copy. i kindly explained i knew my numbers were clear (years of writing deposit slips at retail stores) and if they were that unsure you could read the writing, isn't that what it's there for? they gave me the credit as like a courtesy credit which made me laugh. it wasn't like they were doing me a favor reversing a fee, they flat out made a mistake.

i bank in nyc now so on the rare occasion i go in i get great service from the branch i use. before i moved last year the branch i used the service could depend on the person. the branch also takes the checks at the atm and they clear very quickly, i have never heard of two weeks. maybe it depends on the amount or type of check? i know from dealing with CC transactions banks have all sorts of quirky criteria for things.

i can tell you this, if fees start popping up i will be taking my money elsewhere.

I second the Credit Union option. Your funds are obtainable in most any city without fees and it's your money invested into an institution that works for you. Not for making a major profit like our current day banking system. We did not have to bail out any credit unions that I know of either simply because they do things the way they should. Thier rates and services are usually more modest as well. I can do all my banking remotely and my cash deposited in Michigan is mine in moments in Kissimmee. Free of charge.
Good luck!

We are in the middle of the transition from Wachovia to Wells Fargo. All of your stories are making me really nervous. At one point I only had a credit union. It looks like I may be going back to that.

We got switched over in August, and we will be leaving. In the 10 years I banked with Wachovia I had no problems, but in the month I've been with Wells Fargo I've had to call them 3 times.

Also, it's a pile of garbage that they say you'll see the same employees when you go in the bank after the switch. When I went in after the switch, I did not recognize a SINGLE person in the bank, and I've been going to the same branch for years.

I have never heard anything good about Wells Fargo and I certainly wouldn't put up with them. I would recommend as others have the credit union option. Big banks like wf take you to the cleaners. Thefe's been a big push to leave those big bank names in favor of local banks and credit unions and I'm all for that. Credit unions have much better rates and they treat you fairly. Big banks could care less. The choice is clear to me. Dump the big banks. I see no advantage to them.

I hate hearing this. My husband opened our account when he was 16 years old, so the account is over 40 years old. We have been very happy with both First Union and Wachovia. If we're not happy with Wells, however, we've already decided that we will switch for most of our banking. We have an account at a smaller bank that I set up as part of my parents' estate and it can easily become our main one.

Another Wells Fargo hater here. We just got hit with the $3/month charge for using our debit card. We've had a savings account with Ingdirect for years, and they just sent me an offer for a $50 bonus if I sign up for checking with them. No fees, and the checking account even pays (a tiny amount of) interest. We have a checking account at Sun Trust that we only use right now to make payments on a loan we have through them. I'm thinking of closing the Wells Fargo, using the Ing for most stuff, but holding onto the Sun Trust for if I need a local branch--like for cashing small checks from people and stuff.

We also have an ING account, but I don't see how to make that work for checking at this point in our life. We write very few checks, but they are almost all to the school. If you scroll down my check register between August and May, I'd say all but one or two of the entries are to the school. And I just don't know how to make that work with ING paperless checking. If it wasn't for that, I would switch to them in a second - I've been very happy with our savings accounts there over the past few years.

They give you real checks now! I think that's why we didn't sign up for it before, but I looked again when they sent me that $50 bonus offer, and you can buy a checkbook. It looks like it wouldn't be ideal for people who write a ton of checks, but if you just need them occasionally it should be fine. My main hesitation was with deposits...we direct deposit paychecks, but DH does a lot of tutoring (he's a math teacher), so he has a number of small checks to deal with for that. I think you have to mail in checks to deposit with Ing, and that's why we'd hold onto the other account and probably just cash all those checks.

kokotg - thanks for the info on ING. I'm going to check that out again. We don't really need a physical bank - we go into the bank about once a year at most, so expanding our ING stuff might work for us then.

Something else that is strange I didn't get my monthly pittance of an interest payment on one of my savings accounts. Normally it posts on the last day of the month but not this time. Guess I will call on Tuesday to see what is up...

pittance is a good word. my 10 cents from last month is there but not this month....maybe they are testing to see if we even notice?;)

Loved Wachovia can't stand Wells Fargo! When wells took over they automatically started putting holds on my checks. Never before have I bounced anything and neither have any payroll checks bounced. They could not give me any real explanation other than it was Wells policy. I told them to stuff it and switched to Suntrust. Could not be happier with that decision.

You guys have convinced me. I am going to move my money. Most of my bills are paid out of my credit union so that won't be an issue. I am going to check out a couple of places today. My credit union is kind of far away so I wanted to have something local but I will not abide anyone playing games with my money.

I have to find the bank that I want to use and then take it from there. I do like the way to save thing but I think I want to go to the one where they just round up the change to the next dollar. Anyone know which bank that is? It may be Suntrust.

Off to do some bank research.

It's Bank of America. Head's up about SunTrust - they just got rid of their free checking and are also charging for debit cards as well. :sad2:

Another former Wachovia customer that ran from Wells. Though I did keep the account open only because I am walking distance to a branch in case I need to cash a check I recieve I can. But lately that has become a song and a dance. Was talking with DW about finally just closing the accounts. The service has gone downhill and you wait forever to get a transaction completed. I do agree with previous posters about all their expirences. I switched to a credit union also and do all my main banking with them. Takes a little getting used too with the billpay system (they pay bills early in the morning not later in the day).
What did it for me really was one of the bank reps who through Wachovia used to help me out could access everything and make changes for me couldn't do jack after the switch. When I confronted her about how other customers felt about the switch she just kind of smiled as to say not many people are happy.
Now I go by the branch and it seems really dead as though alot of people have made the switch also.

Yeah, I saw that about SunTrust. Won't be going there. I have a mild aversion to Bank of America because they were the first in our area to charge for ATM usage when I was a kid. I will check them out though.

I paid off a $4000+ Visa balance but Wells Fargo wouldn't credit our account. I took the canceled check to the bank and showed the teller in person that the account had been paid, but the teller still wouldn't credit the account. Had to call a stoopervisor in California to straighten out the mess.

I hate Wells Fargo. We opened an account with them when we were going to buy a short-sale condo a few years back. We sent in the check and you would not BELIEVE how difficult it was going to be to get the money back! Since there are no branches near us, we were going to have to fill out forms in, have them notarized, send in originals of our IDs...just for our $1000. I had them send me an ATM card instead and we withdrew the money that way, then closed the account afterward.

I still had to threaten them with legal action, however. They called our house mulitple times per day, every day, while we still had that account (with funds in it). They refused to speak to me and my DH at the time worked nights. I told them times they could call, but they would still call at the worst times and still refuse to talk to me -- even though my name was on the account.

I'm glad we're shut of them.

I just got my switch notice Saturday. I will be looking for a new bank in the next couple of weeks. The branch isn't very convenient anymore anyway and even as wachovia the ATM is down more often than not. I have my mortgage with wf (was with wachovia and already transferred) and that seems to be ok but the paperwork that came in the mail was freaking me out about not being able to do online payments with as many places as we are used to and how they may take the money out of the acct 5 days before they pay? :confused3 time to get out!

No, not so far. But I'm linked to my mom's accounts, and that balance is probably what is keeping me from fees (unless they haven't started here in NJ yet). I really did love Wachovia though...and especially the Wachovia online banking website. WF website is something I still have to get used to.
