anyone else get sick?

I second or third the short time span. I got violently ill within an hour and a half of eating bad raw clams. I actually felt worse much sooner, but the vomiting hit 90 minutes later and I thought I was going to die. An hour after it started, I wished I would die. I didn't realize others also got hit, until several days later, when the hospital put 2 + 2 together and realized several had reported having had clams from our local supermarket within a few days of each other. I think the op is trying to see if anyone else on the board happened to be there the same time as her and had a reaction. It took me over 25 years to eat a raw clam again..and then I had one or two, and I remembered once again, and stopped. My stomach hurts just remembering.

Similar to my dad....my parents were at a restaurant and my dad was eating mussels. he realized one tasted bad but it was too late, already down. He was so ill, quite quickly and said he wished he died...it was awful.

The bacteria may not be food borne at all. All it takes is for the food to come in contact with bacteria by touch and voila, illness. Someone didn't wash out lettuce greens throroughly, or forgot to wash his or her hands, etc. It's entirely possible for a single person to become ill that way in a restaurant where others don't.

Hope he feels better!

We all got sick on our trip over Easter to WDW. I'm not sure waht it was, but it happened after we ate at Earl of Sandwich for the first time.

DS5 got sick first, several hours after EOS. Threw up in the car....for some reason I had a bark bag in the glove compartment! Turned into OKW entrance as it was the first one. Had to get him out of the car immeidately. Guard station was very nice and game us some paper towels. When we got back to WL Kevin was basically stripped and the valets got us tons of fresh towels to wrap him in right away. That was Monday.

Tuesday DS16 and I went back to EOS, not making a connection (!!), while DS5 and DH stayed in the hotel. My stomach starting hurting, but I kept going as alone time with my teenager is rare...alone time having FUN is even rarer. We had fun, but I just coudln't eat the restg of the day. Got back to the room after midnight. IN an hour or so I was puking my guts up and never stopped. LIterally. Had bad diarrhea and vomiting to the point of 18 times in 10 hours. Ended up at San Lake ER for about 7 hours getting IV meds and fluids. Rough time.

Earlier Tues. DH had some diarrhea, but no vomitting. He had the mildest case.

Wed. DH and I stayed in hotel and DS5 who was better and DS16 went out together.

Wed. night was DS16's turn. The whole mess all over again.

Thurs. DH, DS5, and I went out. DS16 stayed in hotel. Friday we were all better, although DS16 didn't feel great.

WL concierge was fabulous, getting us ginger ale, chicken noodle soup, crackers, etc. and delivering it to our room! Housekeeping came promptly at all hours with more towels and sheet sets. The pool bar got us cups and cups of plain shaved ice. It tasted like filet mignon to me!

It stunk, but we made the best of it. We may have just shared a bug, but I won't eat at EOS anytime soon! (although it WAS delicious!!)

Hearing how your family got sick one by one leads me to think this was a stomach virus (probably Norwalk) and had nothing to do with eating at Earl of Sandwich. It sounds like as each of you got the bug, you just passed it on and on. Sharing the bathroom, the phone, the remote, touching the light switches and door knobs is what did that. Still, I think anyone's normal reaction after having any type of stomach illness is to violently refuse to eat the thing they ate before they got sick ever again, lol.

I got very sick after eating at Fulton's Crabhouse on our honeymoon (this was back in 1996!). I had crab legs and creme brulee. About 30 minutes after eating, DH and I were in Downtown Disney and I started getting awful stomach cramps. It came on so fast after that, DH was dragging me to find a bus to get back and I kept trying to stop and throw up on the grass, but he wouldn't let me...he was afraid people would think I was drunk! :guilty: Then we finally got on a bus and then the diarrhea cramps hit...I was hanging on for dear life. FINALLY got back to the Poly (we were Disney newbies, maybe there were bathrooms on the way, but danged if we could find them) and I lived in the bathroom for the next few hours.

I think it was the first time I had symptoms of lactose intolerance. Every time I ate dairy I would have the same reaction. Now I take two Lactaids and I'm fine. Does creme brulee even have milk in it? No clue. :goodvibes

Yeah, we thought about the stomach bug and what close quarters we were in. That certainly could have been the case. But you're right, you still tend to be shy about going back to the "scene of the crime".... even if it wasn't!

Your husband may have gotten food poisoning or he could have a new stomach sensitivity/allergy. I know how horrible it is - I'm the queen of getting "sick" right after eating. My fiance jokes that I've used every public restroom from here to California (and I have a horrible public restroom phobia). Once in Epcot, instead of eating/drinking my way around the world, I, well, never mind. My fiance could eat food out of a dumpster and be fine, but I eat my own cooking at home in a spotless (compulsively clean) kitchen and bathroom here I come. I literally do not eat 12-24 hours prior to a flight because I'm so afraid I have to use the restroom. I've found comfort in knowing it's not just me.

If your particular "bug" is staph aureus you can indeed have symptoms in under 2 hours. Raw steak is usually much less of a problem unless it has been pierced alot, although I suppose that being cut small may be more of a problem. Raw chicken is much more of a problem and should never be placed on a plate with food to be eaten without cooking. And never eat raw or under cooked hamburger if you like your kidneys.
As stated before Norwalk virus is transmitted from not washing your hands before eating and after using the bathroom, things like that. It could go through a family in a hotel room in a New York minute.
No matter what it is, it still can't be fun being sick at WDW!

My clam tado, was under two hours, but it turned out to be a lot more people than me..so the dx was food poisoning. It hurts to think about it, and it's been more years, than some of you are alive LOL.

Why do you think it "had to be the food"?? I always wonder why people are so sure....after working in an ER for many years and hearing hundreds of people that are "sure it is the food" I still don't know. If the assumption is because they got sick soon after eating....I don't know of any form of food borne illness that causes symptoms within an hour or 2 of eating...most are a minimum of 6 to 8 hours and often much longer. If it was a food borne illness chances are it would be more related to what he ate for breakfast than for lunch.

Boy, just reading the headline my thought was the same. Just heard about the wife of a friend of mine who made it to the hospital in time just to be paddled and revived after having a severe heart attack. She had complained about a severe upset stomach all evening. Her husband, who had a heart attack before, had enough sense to get her there in time to save her life. Don't always assume it's the food.

Sure sounds like Staph Aureus then. When I said "bug" I was referring to the bacteria being in the food and then ingested. It is a nasty little bugger implicated in a wide variety of problems of which food poisoning is just one.

We ate a late lunch on Thur 4/14 at Le Celllier. In all we liked our meals - the soup was the best and the pretzel bread. DH, however, got very sick after eating there. It had to be the food - he got so violently ill that we had to leave the park and he was sick all night long. He ate the sliced prime rib sandwich, the soup (which we all ate) and had the 'end of the world' beer. He only had one beer and he drinks beer a couple times a week with certain meals in the summer months. I don't think it was the beer. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen? Do we let anyone know?

We ate @ Le cellier1/8/05 for my husbands B-Day. We ate the same thing but 30 min. later I was so sick we had to leave Epcot. I still don't know why i got sick and he didn't. The next day I was fine.

If you ever get this sick at WDW, you need to contact the restaurant or the front desk of your hotel. I got sick on our first night in January. I threw up all night long, plus had diarrhea. We contacted the front desk. I also wrote a letter to DVC as soon as we got home. They sent me a form to fill out so they could check things out. One thing they requested was any medical assistance that I had received, especially if a stool sample was taken. They can match that against any other bacteria/illnesses in the area at the same time.

I was sure mine was food poisoning (crab cakes and caesar salad), but apparently it wasn't.

I would have never thought of that Deb. and Bill. Thanks for the info.! Hope it doesn't happen again, though!

It could have been the food...

Or it could have been the person that handled the food.

Or it could have been something that he touched in the park.

Some of the nasties that cause "food poisoning" can live outside for a little while on things like handrailings, door knobs, faucet handles, etc. That's how families move them around.

If you or someone in your party gets this type of illness, wash your hands (and theirs) frequently.

My 2 year old son got something last time we were at WDW. He cleared the pool at the ASM. He was fine for a while, then blew at both ends twice in the San Francisco airport. Luckily we knew he was ill and had exactly two changes of clothes in our carry on.

Staphylococcus aureus is the fast one that gets you in 4-6 hours, possibly less.

Salmonella takes 12-24.

There are others that take varying lengths of time.

It was more likely that if it was a meal, it was the breakfast meal, or even the meal from the night before, but it is difficult to say for sure.

I agree with you Whacked. I've been sick on two occasions at WDW and the cause could have been any one of those things. This is why I try to avoid buffets. Too many people handling shared utensils.
