Anyone else get sick after eating at 1900 Park Fare on November 3rd (dinner)??

It's not just buffets where this kind of mishandling of the food can happen either. Here is my story. It was my honeymoon and my wife and I were staying at the Polynesian in Concierge. This was back when the concierge lounge was in the main lobby area and was called King Kamehameha (sp?)... Anyway, they had food and drinks out all day, nothing as elaborate as they do now. They always had a bowl of macadamia nuts out, which are my FAVORITE!! I had some each day until I saw a 3 or 4 year old taking spoonfuls of nuts out and eating them FROM THE SPOON!!! Parents off somewhere else lounging.. Totally grossed me out.. Needless to say, I skipped the macademia nuts for the rest of our honeymoon, which for me, is very hard to do.. :( :(

I will never understand why people don't keep an eye on their kids when they are around communal food such as buffets and concierge lounges.. Sometimes kids forget, it is up to the parents to catch them. Of course when you have a parent like the kind that DeeP described in their post, I guess anything can happen.

I also remember the concierge lounge when it was back in the main lobby. And, you are right, it was much more limited back then.

Funny that you mention the "touching" of food at the concierge lounges. When I stayed in the Poly Concierge back in 1998, I had a similar situation. It was during the evening desserts/cordials. They have miscellaneous "mini" desserts to choose from. There was a 10year old or therabouts in front of me who decided to take a sample of each dessert selection. The mother was at a nearby table with a smaller child, getting situated. She saw how much the 10 year old was taking and said "that is too much dessert for you!". Well, he proceeded to put back half of what he had on his plate. The attendant wasn't behind the counter at the moment so the only person witnessing this was me, the mother, and the 10 year old. In hind sight, I should have removed what he put back. Eventually, someone grabbed those desserts, germs and all.

Anywho, I guess you never know who touched what before you. And, unfortunately, parents don't always keep a watchful eyes on their kids.

Big thank you to everyone for posting on this thread. I had NO IDEA people did nasty stuff like that at buffets! What an eye-opener!

Question: Does anyone have any suggestions as to some foods that are less likely to be contaminated than others? For instance, I've heard that fried foods are less germy because the high temperature at which they're cooked kills the germs. Any other ideas...?

We hope to visit in Dec and I would dearly love any suggestions to help keep from getting sick.

The fried food idea won't help at a buffet. Its the germs that get on the food after cooking that you have to worry about!

I think most of the really gross stuff happens very seldom. I think the thing we all should be most cautious about is the germ covered serving utensils. When you get to your table, use wipes or make another trip to the bathroom to wash your hands before picking up your silveware, glass, or any finger food, etc. and most of the threat of contamination will be covered.

It makes no difference how the food is cooked if it's contaminated afterwards in the serving area.

You can get food poisoning from any food anywhere - including your own home. If you are really worried, then avoid buffets - thus lowering the risk of contamination by the general public.

That said - I've eaten all over the place at Disney, including a number of buffets and have never been sick, and I'll continue to eat at them. I try to keep it in perspective by remembering that thousands of people eat at Disney daily, hundreds of people on these boards report and review their numerous meals and I hardly ever hear of any problems.

So sorry to hear that you got food poisioning at WDW.There was a thread on these boards about the Salmonella at 7 Restarunts at WDW.On another Disney Board was the worst thing for it was about Goofys Kitchen in California which is a character dinner that has rats. There were pictures in the newspaper of Goofy Kitchen and it is hard to believe that Disney has totally lost it standards. They use to be perfect and now this cost cutting and the end result is unreal. How they can treat people like this is hard to believe .Walt Disney would never let this happen .

Well--unless I've missed something along the way, no connection was ever established between any food preparation at WDW and food poisening. In fact, any buffet food contamination most likey occured as a result of-- shall we say--"guest infestation". Which can occur at any buffet, anywhere.
And we all know that "7 restaurant" thing was due to PREPACKAGED tomatoes--no fault of Disney whatsoever.
I'm sure Walt would have no trouble eating at any WDW restaurant. I know I haven't these past 27 years.

I think a certain about of caution should be used when eating at a buffet. I agree that guest infection is likely the culprit here.
