Just wondering...we were really excited to go to 1900 Park Fare to celebrate my niece's 12th birthday a day early. The food did NOT disappoint...tasted good and a good variety from other buffets.

Needless to say, we were all really bummed to find out that four of the seven of us got MAJOR food poisioning from eating there!!! It was VERY disappointing since it was our last park day...and my niece's 12th birthday to boot!! She made it through her birthday breakfast at Cindy's but didn't last much longer than that!! My mom didn't even get to go to Cindy's...she was so sick. It lasted the WHOLE day for all four of them.

Did anyone else get sick?? (We think it was the chicken wings)

:( IVY

Not sure if this is related at all but we (me, my 2 DD's, not my DH) got sick on our vacation Halloween week.

We ate at 1900 on October 29 but I think it was something on October 31, if it was food poisoning for us.

My 6 year old got sick first on Halloween (31st) night throwing up every hour for 8 hours. Then 2 days later, on November 1, our DD (3) got the same symptoms of throwing up every hour for 8 hours, while I had the runs.

I'm thinking this couldn't be food poisioning as I thought that you react right away as opposed to a day or 2 later??

Either way it pretty much ruined Halloween for our poor DD (6) who threw up first in Fantasyland in front of everyone listening to the Storyteller by the Sword and then an hour later on our way out after the parade right in the middle of Main Street.

BUt we still had a magical vacation anyway and lots of good memories to offset the bad.

I hope you feel the same!

Just curious, did either of your families drink the water there, from taps or fountains as opposed to bottled water? I've read here on the boards that some people cannot tolerate the water in WDW. Ivy, your situation does sound like it might have indeed been food poisoning since the ordeal came on relatively quickly and lasted one day (especially if all 4 ate the chicken wings). Sorry you guys had such a yucky thing happen on your trips--hope you still had enjoyable trips overall!! :D

Not like I am a food poisoning expert (but I have had it). Doesn't it come on hours later? (Nothing immediate or days later.) For example if you have something at breakfast, it starts hitting you early evening?
When we were in WDW over Columbus Day weekend, we were surprised at the parents saying their kids were sick, one was left behind in the room sick, saw literally very sick people, our friends left and got very sick right afterwards.
Sure was a lot going around then!
And not just FL, I know people who have travelled in the states, drank tap water often and got very ill. Not that anyone's water is bad. It just depends on what your system is use to.
I do now drink tap water, but use a filter. So far so good. (DH ONLY drinks bottled water. Even at home. Water snob. ;) )
Our first WDW, by the end of our week long stay, my system was starting to mess up. And it may have been the water. Maybe not.
But in WDW, most likely, you are over tired, over excited, and eat more and richer than normal, and are off schedule. Could just be a combination of things, I think.
But since the first trip I have stuck to bottled/filtered water and had no problems.

There's nothing like being on vacation and getting sick. All you want to do is be at home!! At least, that's how it is for us. I am curious to know if anyone was on a plane close to when you got sick? I know almost every time I fly..I get sick! I have had a very nasty case of the "Florida Flu" when we were there in 1999. So sick.. I had to make a trip to the Celebration ER. I got to see another side to Disney Underground Magic Kingdom. The Halloween Parade was going on and was taken down under Main St. I swore it was food poisoning but it wasn't. Released from ER @ 5am & boarded the Magic @ Noon. I was not missing that cruise. I think it has something to do with recycled air on the planes.

That's just my 2 cents.

Ivy,
My family & I ate there 11/3, had a 5pm PS. I was sick Monday & Tuesday w/ cramps & diarrhea but not vomiting - probably a GI virus, not food poisoning, in my case. We didn't eat the chicken wings though.

Just a few months ago, a large break out of food poisoning was reported at WDW. They tracked it down to something I never would have thought of -- I think it was a pre-packaged shipment/container of tomatoes!
Anyone else remember that?

Ah -- here it is: Who would have thought of the culprit being prepackaged tomatoes?

" This happened way back in june.

LAKE BUENA VISTA -- About 140 people, including organ-transplant patients in town for an athletic competition, got sick with salmonella poisoning after eating diced tomatoes at Walt Disney World in June, health officials said Friday.

Disney stopped using the tomatoes as soon as it was notified of the problem in mid-July, said Marilyn Waters, a Disney World spokeswoman. Health officials say there is no ongoing threat, and no one died.

In all, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified people from 32 states who became sick, and at least three persons required hospitalization. The food-borne disease typically causes diarrhea and fever that subside without treatment.

But complications can be serious for organ recipients, who take drugs to suppress their immune systems so their bodies do not reject the donated organ. The CDC is recommending doctors test for salmonella in any transplant recipients showing symptoms who attended the games. Those patients may need antibiotics.

Officials would not identify the food processor, but Bill Toth, an epidemiologist with the Orange County Health Department, said it is being investigated by state health officials, the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC.

Held June 25to29 at Disney, the 2002 Transplant Games were attended by 6,000 people, including 1,500 organ recipients. Officials could not give a breakdown on the number of recipients who got sick.

The problem surfaced in mid-July, when the Minnesota Department of Health identified two salmonella cases in people who had attended the games. The CDC then asked state health departments nationwide to see whether they had similar cases.

Through interviews, health officials determined they all ate dishes with diced tomatoes at six Disney venues.

"The minute that we had an indication of what the product might be, we removed it 100 percent from our property," Waters said."

So sorry to hear your DD's were sick on your vacation. I worry about food poisioning at buffets!

Salmonella can be a problem with produce, as well as poultry. Another likely culprit on a buffet would be anything that contains mayonaisse - i.e. cole slaw or potato salad. I once got tomaine poisoning as a child from a chicken salad sandwich. I think I got sick about 5 hours after eating the sandwich.

Here is another scary thing that can be picked up from buffets. My dad got hepatitis from a salad bar.

Food posioning can have an onset of 20minutes to hours. To truely be diagnosed with food borne illness you need to be"tesed". But...if it quacks like a duck....:p .

I would email them and let them know your suspicions just in case they have had others report it. Most food posioning goes unreported

different types of food poisoning can "come on" at different times. The most common "staph" type of food poisoning is usually very quick and is over quickly. Salmonella can take up to 3 days to show sympoms and last a lot longer.. there are a lot of others types (as seen in the above messages). When I worked in public health and there was an "outbreak" (i.e. wedding receptions, hospitals, etc.), we did food histories for 3 days prior to getting ill to account for all the possible illnesses (most often it was salmonella).

We too have had the sudden onset at WDW of either "the runs" or "the throw-ups". We have learned, however, not to eat at any buffet AND the major secret: don't drink the water. We have, for the past 6 years, only consumed bottled water. I also carry in my fanny pack one of those mini bottles of hand wash to use at the dining place - its amazing what a difference these 2 things have made. We have visited at all times of the year and we too have to fly Delta and breathe cooties to get there but I swear by this method.

So sorry to hear about all the ruined trips. I know how frustrating it can be especially if you are a single parent and you are the one who is sick and the kids miss out.

What is it with the water at WDW?- my daughter and I have figured out from trial and error that we are fine if we don't drink it out of the tap - not even to brush our teeth! The rest of my family doesn't seem to have a problem, but if my daughter and I like sitting through, for instance, the Muppets movie without making a big scene and running out to the bathroom, we drink bottled water!

For those of you who avoid the water, do you also avoid coffee, fountain drinks, etc? Because the water is in those too. I'm wondering if small amounts are ok but large amounts get you sick. I don't have to worry about the water because I can't stand it so I won't accidentally drink it (not even in coffee or tea).

All this talk of food poisoning and WDW dining is getting me scared. Especially for my DS (2 yr old). I hope these are really isolated cases. The only time I ever got food poisoning was from a Taco Bell at home and I can't imagine going through that away from home in a hotel room! Ugghh that's the pits. I'm sorry to hear some of you had such terrible experiences.

The coffee doesn't bother me - maybe the water gets hot enough to kill stuff?

Where are you Mr. Science? We need you!

I don't know what it is about the water except that I once heard Disney has their own 'well' and purifies it maybe differently than most municipalities do - this could just be a rumor though. All I know is the last time we drank any of their water my son became violently ill, then I did and then my husband did. The M.D. said it was dysentary cause by contaminated water(yes, he did lab work). Since that trip we have only consumed canned soft drinks, bottled water, and if my son wants a soft drink at a restaurant we ask for it without ice. I have had an occasional margarita but I guess the alcohol must take care of the germs. At any rate, we don't brush our teeth with it either and have been healthy since we figured this out.

I think Disney does an incredible job with everything else and drinking bottled water is not an inconvenience to us. Maybe we just have weaker digestive tracts or something.

Last December, we were dying to eat at Boma's at AKL, and my husband did almost feel like dying after.

He was the only one who ate the seafood type gumbo soup.

Approximately 4 hours later he was in the bathroom all night every half hour to hour hugging the throne.

The next day was our last day of the trip and he was in bed all day.

I'm sorry your family got so sick! That sounds awful :(

Our 2 year old was fine. He drank the water that they give you with ice at the restaurants with no problems. DH & I also drank the water & coffee & soda. Maybe it is just what you are used to?

I'm no Mr. (or Mrs.) Science, but I do know after a huge outbreak of e. coli at our local fair 3 years ago an elderly gentleman died from contracting it through a cup of coffee. It hadn't been hot enough for long enough, if I understood the reports correctly.

Also, my dd just brought home a note from school about listeriosis. It was in some deli meat the school system had bought and served for a few weeks. Symptoms of the infection could appear in a few days or TWO MONTHS.

Sorry for those who got sick on their trips. We were all sick a few weeks ago ... yes the same week the school served that turkey. Even though my dd hadn't eaten any, I wonder if it could be transmitted other ways.

It seems like the vast majority of people seem to always think that their tummy troubles are from contaminated food. I always assume that our family has picked up a virus. I wonder if the truth is somewhere in the middle? I have seen some absolutely filthy habits at buffets, so our new strategy is that if we must go to a buffet we will be there when it opens. We won't eat at a buffet that has been grazed on for hours. (We only do Disney buffets--would not consider Golden Corral or any such place after a nightmare experience for us there several years back.) Back to the viruses, I think that people plan and save for their trips for months or years and nothing is going to stop their vacation so they come as they are. (Yes, sick--contagious, unless it's something visible like chicken pox.) Think how "confined" you are with potentially contagious people in the lines as you wait for rides.
If you've ever watched any of the news shows about buffets most of the bacteria are on the serving spoon handles that everyone shares. I wonder if that might be to blame more often than the restaurant serving up bad food?
Anyway, sorry about your illness. Been there and done that and it's no fun!
