Anyone else anti-tatoo?

I didn't get my tattoo because I was trying to be trendy and cool. It doesn't define my personality any more than wearing jeans or a dress defines me. Heck, if anything the fact that I have a tat is opposite of my personality. Me making a permanent decision? The mind boggles a little.

Now my purple fauxhawk I did get because it's awesome and "edgy." I'll likely be bored with it by fall and grow it back out and change hair colors again.

no kidding! Me also, I got my first one back 30+ years ago, hanging with the HA's and bikers. I got them when people just did not do that! I had tattoo parties, where my friend Tony would have them lined up out the door! Loved the illegal parties!! Now, it is just...not the same

I can admit that I judge people negatively because of their tattoos.

If someone has bad ink - off the wall flash, shaky lines, terrible fading, and just general poor quality - I think less of that person. I have a really hard time not thinking "Was he too dumb or too poor to go to a decent artist? Could she really not think of anything more interesting than the same dumb butterfly that the rest of her sorority sisters got?"

Like the OP, I wish that I could not judge based on ONE action (albeit one with near-permanent consequences), but I know that I do.

Other than that, I love tattoos. I'm a big fan of my own, with the exception of the lily that I got on my ankle when I was 18. Don't get me wrong - I still love that I have a lily, but I hate that it is small and all black and fuzzy looking. A dear artist friend of mine is designing me a much better lily to cover it up. I've never worried about the job factor because I don't have any desire to take a job that would prohibit tattoos - just like I can't see myself ever fitting into an office setting where the typical uniform included pantyhose. It just isn't me. That said, my tattoos don't show unless I make the decision to show them off, and I like it that way. I've also never worried about the age factor. When I'm 90 I'll be pleased as punch to be able to look at my very own flesh-and-blood scrapbook.

Everybody judges someone at some point in their lives. It's human nature! Our brains like to put things in categories based on past experience and information, even when we don't have all the facts.
The problems come when people discriminate against others because of their judgments.
If I see a lady in her 70's in red hot pants, smoking a cigarette, and covered in tattoos my brain is probably headed straight to the "trash" category. Same if I see a tweetie bird or Tasmanian devil shirt. (I have no explanation for that one...I don't know why my brain goes to the trash category at the site of Looney toons, I actually know a few very untrashy people who love looney tunes. My brain is just weird.) Does it make me a bad person to think those things? No, I don't think so. What would make me a bad person is if I let my assumptions prevent me from getting more information.
If someone is saying that they don't want to be friends with someone because they have tattoos...yeah that's an issue. Someone who is saying they make certain assumptions about people with tattoos is just being honest, and there is nothing wrong with that so long as they don't let those assumptions lead to discrimination.

I'm not anti-tattoo, my sister has one, my nephew many. It's just not for me. I heard the quote recently "You wouldn't put a bumper sticker on a Roll Royce" and I kind of like that saying. Not that I think that I'm a Rolls Royce, but I don't see the point of changing what is me already. I'm pretty damn good the way I am! But I can understand the importance of tattoos for others. I just don't care for a lot of tattoos all over someone, but to each his own, this is why we are individuals.

I would not like it if any of my children came home with one. In my opinion, it is defacing your body, plain and simple.

That being said, if someone else wants to do it, it is their business.

I used to think that the ankle tattoo, circling around the ankle was nice. Until I saw one on a 60 something year old woman with cankles. Not attractive in my opinion.

haa haahaa, guess what I do for work?? yep, health code violations! wow, I guess I have one up on you guys!!! lol The girl with the tattoo' s does that for work! and as for the comment about "homemade" tattoo's, those are usually called "jailhouse" tattoo's, done in guess? yep, jail!

And high school. I'd estimate that of my seniors who have tattoos, about 1/3 of them are home-done.

But assuming food workers who have tattoos are "walking hepatitis carriers" again I think is pushing it a bit much.

I don't think anyone said it's a common thing, but it is one more way to get hepititus.

NOOOO... nobody else can make you feel bad about your appearance. I'm glad your self-esteem is so high, but I'm going err on the side of caution and not be mean to people because of the way they look

I totally agree that such things are easier said than done. A year ago I had a skin condition (and it had to be on my face!) that made me feel very self-conscious!

But if it's going to bother you, you might be the wrong person to get a tattoo. Some people ARE going to dislike it.

It was cool. What isn't cool is people's attitudes toward those who are different or who like different things.

That's a hypocritical stance. You're saying that everyone should be accepting of everything other people do . . . yet you're saying that people whose opinions differ from yours are wrong.

We're back to the original point: People don't all like the same things. That's neither right nor wrong. Disliking something isn't being judgemental.

So, you won't get pregnant because it might deface your body when you get stretchmarks? That would definately bring down the value of your body if tattoos will. And yes, there is some measure of sarcasm in there. Do you also not wear makeup, do your hair, etc? You believe your body is perfect the way it is, so why should you change it?

I don't have any stretchmarks -- thanks for asking. Don't know how I avoided them. Also, there's not much comparison between make-up, which can be changed as you age or as your preferences change, and a permanant tattoo that's there forever.

I have eight tattoos. Two of these are on my forearms, and they are "magical" (well, they are Alpha Ambigrams that i had custom made).

One of my tattoos is on my back, and was designed by a very good friend of mine who passed away. It is in remembrance of them.

My most sentimental tattoo is one i had done in Malaysia. It was hand done at a Buddhist temple, using a sharpened twig freshly cut from a plant, the ink is supposedly a special mix of snake venom and herbs mixed with ash from the leaves of the plant the monk used as the needle.

it was a very reverent time, and the skill and precision the artist has is amazing.

I am not a fan of tatoos either. They do nothing for me. I just don't find them attractive at all - on men or women. Just not my thing.

I always think, "Imagine what that thing will look like when that person is in their 80's"

Many people like them, but I don't.

I feel the same way. It's not for me to judge, but I'd never get one. I think the human body is beautiful as it was made. It doesn't need to be covered in pictures. JMHO.

I wouldn't get a tattoo...not my thing, but I don't have a problem with a "normal" tattoo.

However, I always feel sorry for those people who have millions of them because I think it's got to be some sort of psych issue somewhere...looking for attention, needing to make oneself "different", a feeling of worthlessness so one makes one's body ugly, a feeling of worthlessness so one "decorates" one's body....

For the people worried about hepatitis do you realize that the risk from tattoos is for Hepatitis B and C, NOT Hepatitis A which is what you would get from a hepatitis outbreak at a restaurant.

As far as tattoos go, I don't have any and don't want any, but I have nothing against people that do. Some of them are pretty cool looking.

In your opinion. People get tattoos for many different reasons, many get memorial tattoos to remind them of someone they love that has passed away, it helps with the grieving process. But obviously they must be only grieving temporarily, because you say so. When a father loses a child and has that portrait tattooed over his heart, when is that temporary feeling supposed to go away?



You can hate tattoos, but your cutesy little saying, you should keep to yourself.

You'll think I'm trashy then because I love the Looney Tunes character Sylvester. Actually I think that all of the Looney Tunes characters are great classics done by great artists who just happen to be trashed a bit by being featured at Six Flags. But to each their own.

I'm having trouble with the concept of judging people for having tattoos or for some of the other reasons listed here. I've had wonderful friends who had tattoos and I don't understand disliking them for that reason.
