We were thinking of driving down in July, but don't have passports and not sure that we'd get them in time. Are we fine with birth certificates and photo ID for dh and I and just BC for the kids?

Thanks

You'll be fine with original birth certificates. Passports aren't required for land border crossings yet, only air and sea at the moment. Enjoy your trip.

You're fine to be driving down with just photo ID and birth certificates, however, you'll have more than enough time to get the passports if you want to. If you bring all the info into the passport office they'll have them for you in a week or two. That way you'll have them for future trips as well!

we went down in March for a cruise leaving from NYC by car. The border guard wasn't convicned we wouldn't need passports for our cruise ( we had already checked that ) but he let us through no problem. Passports won't be required until next year at the earliest.

You'll be fine, we even flew without them(passports) from Detroit to Orlando in January.

Driving = No Passport Required. Did it in March. No problems.
