Hello :) I'm about to pull my a hair out. I'm in a drafting and drawing class at University and unfortunately my prof is not so good with explanations and examples. So here I am trying to put together an elevation drawing of a ground plan and I can't find the symbols required. Are there any good websites out there with symbols and such. I've searched but have been very unsucessful.

My DH is. Here is what he had to say:
Unfortunately the poster is a bit too vague about what symbols they
need.
Are they doing an architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural or
civil elevation?

Sorry Sonya for being so vague. It's actually an elevation for a theatre set. I've been drafting out the walls and was doing just fine til I got to a "centre window with mullion, sash type." I need to do an elevation drawing of this wall with the window and window seat.
Thank-you :teeth:

Sorry, DH doesn't know anywhere. Maybe tomorrow when he gets into work he can ask around.

That's so very sweet, I really appreciate it. I have drafting class tomorrow so I can't talk to my prof. I've done as much as I possibly can.
Thanks again :)

I was an architecture major for a year and have no idea what a mullion is!?!

That is so cool that you're drafting a set design. That is one thing I had hoped to be able to do (on the side), was even going to get a theatre minor. I still keep telling myself I'll go volunteer for a little hammering and sawing with some local theater. Sigh.

You're kidding, right?!? What on earth did they teach you for a year?

What most people call a mullion are the strips of wood that divide the panes of glass in a window inside a sash. That's actually NOT a mullion, it's a muntin, but for some reason 99% of the people you run into call this a mullion. A mullion is actually the strip of wood that divides two whole sashes.

A "sash" is the unit that includes the frame and glass that make up the operable part of the window (though sometimes a sash can be fixed as well.) The typical window type that most people think of is a "double hung" which means two sashes that operate independently of each other (you can slide one upward to open from the bottom and slide the other one downward to open from the top). Single hung means the top sash is fixed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "symbols" though. I never took a formal drafting course, they sort of just expect you to pick it up as you go along, and unless the manufacturer provides the cad symbol for what we are using, we generally just draw it from scratch (unless we've drawn it before). A good reference for things like that is Architectural Graphic Standards which you can hopefully find in a library, since it's about a $250 book! I did pick up a copy of a previous edition for around $30 on ebay (and things like windows haven't changed much in 30 years). Might be worth looking into if you are going to do this for more than a single class.

Thanks guys for your help :) I just got back from my drafting class and things have been cleared up. I just wish my prof would provide more examples. A lot of the other students have experience in drafting even though it's not a prerequisite....I of course don't.
Thanks again :)

In .DWG format?
I remembered from my architectural classes all those books on the back shelves; any architectural student will remember those, right? SWEETS!

Go to their website and they have a list of manufacturer's who have a CAD library. You'll have to sign up, and then it lets you access it. You can save the downloaded format (whether it's .DWG, .DXF, etc. to you desktop, then open it from there.)
