DS will be leaving next week for a sailing trip in the Keys with his scout troop. They will have a day to spend in Key West. Any suggestions for teens? I heard Jimmy Buffet has a restaurant there?

It has been a while but I have been there. Funny thing is I don't remember where I ate at!!

Nice trip for a 14 year old don't you think? Meanwhile DH and I will be home watching TV (and DISing) because we're broke after getting DS everything he needs for this trip:D

Krisu, I was just there a few weeks ago, but it was an adults only trip, with 7 couples, so I really don't think my suggestions would be appropriate for teens, LOL!!!

I'm sure he'll have a great time! Key West is a such a neat place and if he's going sailing while there, you couldn't find a more beautiful place to be on the water!

He should have a great time there! Jimmy Buffet does have a restraunt there, but I haven't eaten there. Other restraunts may be a bit much for him. They tend to push alcohol. They have a number of places to get tattoos & piercings, so he may bring home a nice present! JK!!! :teeth: One thing he may like is the Sunset Festival. Everyday at sundown they have a big party at one of the peirs (the same one where cruise ships dock). There's a lot of shopping, street vendors, street performers & other activities. Just make sure they get there in time to enjoy it. As soon as the sun sets, the *entire* crowd leaves. I hope he has a great time!!! :)

Mallory Square is where the sunset celebration takes place. It's awesome and as a matter of fact, while I was there, I was thinking of my teenage boys and how much they'd enjoy the "festival" atmosphere. Lots of street performers and vendors, and an uncomparable sunset!

DH and I were there for a week in May. It is very nice and very hot. We ate at Marguaritaville, but it is way over priced, and the refills are not free. We liked Hard Rock Cafe much better, more resonable prices and free pop refills. There are lots of museums there, my favorite was Mel Fisher's.

Sounds like Key West has changed a bit since I have been there last!

DH and I spent part of our honeymoon there is 1986. I don;t think the town ever would have thought about having a "chain" restaraunt then! Where is Marguartaville and Hard Rock now located?

I remember the sunset celebration, the quaintness of the town, Sloppy Joes!!!, the unsual and beautiful buildings, and the "artsy" feel of the town. I hope it has this same feel to it.

What a cool experience for your DS!!!!!

Karen

It does have the same feel. Hard Rock and Margaretaville are on Duval Street, but housed in old buildings.

You might want to contact Shirley at www.theperfectgift.com . She was born and raised there. Over on the cruise board, she is always so helpful to all of us DISers (she's going to get me coupons and stuff for when we go on the western).:D

We were there last February with my 15 yr old DD and her friend. We did not eat at Margaritaville, but did eat on the outside patio at Hard Rock and watched the sights on Duval St (!). They enjoyed that restaurant. The sunset celebration, as mentioned by others, would be a "don't miss". Our teens (and US) also really enjoyed a bike trip (our B&B rented us bikes) over to the beach at (I think) Fort Zacahary Taylor Park. Interestingly enough, the girls both enjoyed Ernest Hemenway's House/Museum...it was literally around the corner from our B&B so we "dragged" them there. They both had had to read The Old Man and the Sea in their sophomore English class a little earlier in the school year. They really "got into" both the organzed tour, asking questionsetc., and then wandering around the grounds taking pictures of each other and the six-toed cats!
One thing they did NOT like was the abundance of (protected) wild roosters all OVER the place.......the ones outside our B&B crowed at streetlights and stuff ALL NIGHT LONG! LOL

Here are the links to my Key West pictures from May of this year.

Thanks for posting those pics, they were beautiful! Now I hope DS appreciates where he's going:rolleyes: He saw on the Travel Channel that there is a doll on display somewhere there that is supposed to be possessed. Any info?
