Rented Dollar at MCO during 1st week of Dec 2013. Only used for few days & miles, so did not pay the $50+ at the counter for gas.

When on way to MCO to return, filled up at station by World Drive & 535 - I think it is about 14 miles from MCO. Was not asked for fill-up receipt when returned car - thank goodness!

Anyone been required to show the 10 mile receipt? Which company(ies)?

Do you think all of the companies will start requiring the receipts?

We'll be renting at MCO again 2/9 - 2/14/14. Best prices so far are Dollar, Thrifty, & E-Z. I am concerned about that 10 mile receipt business!

Have not been asked for one using National for the last 2 visits (2012 & 2013). The last time I filled up just outside of WDW and then returned the car with no issues.

If you are concerned call the company directly and ask.

Thanks RW for your reply. I know E-Z, Dollar, & Thrifty will say I must provide a receipt, because their terms state so. I haven't checked whether this rule is in the other companies' terms, such as National.

My post is because I am wondering if anyone on this forum has experienced an enforcement of the "show a receipt" rule. If so, did they have a 10 mile receipt or did they bluff it and/or did they get charged.

I have read a few threads here where people posted they had to show a receipt. You can't bluff it if a receipt is required. You could probably find the threads doing a forum search.

I've never been asked by Hertz or National (or any other company) to show a gasoline receipt when returning anywhere. If the gasoline indicator shows full, that's normally enough for the return agent.

If you fill up your tank somewhere between WDW an MCO, you should be fine. And the next renter should be fine too because the gasoline tank will still be very close to full when the next renter gets the car. (Tanks are never completely full at MCO because there's no gas station right in airport.)

It's an honor system. Unfortunately, not all customers are honorable.

Some cars can go 50 or more miles before the needle budges or the highest digital bar turns off. This leads some renters to "outsmart" the rental car company by returning a car that passes for full although it isn't. What they're actually doing is stealing from the next renter. I've had rental cars where I've had to buy two extra two gallons compared to what the car should have used for the miles I drove. (The clue that this is likely to happen is when the needle starts dropping right after renting the car.) It's not worth it to me to make $6 or $7 worth of gasoline an issue with the rental car company, but it it annoying.

calling the company to "ask" about the receipt will not gain a darn thing -- unless you want a flag on your rental telling the rental attendant to make sure and request one from you.

The policy is the policy. Of course the agents will tell you they check. And, of course, most of the time they do not.

It all comes down to the famous Dirty Harry quote. "Do you feel lucky, punk?" Do you?

Fill it up where you want to. If you are the obessive/compulsive type, make sure you do it close to the return gate.

If you are a "wild and crazy" renter, fill the tank 10.6 miles away and see if you get away with it. pirate:

I thought it was only Dollar or Thrifty using this upcharge tactic. I mean really, if the car is full - the car is full ! Just an underhanded way to create more revenue to catch the unsuspecting unseasoned renters !

It was enough for me, that I decided to rent from one of my go to rental car companies (Budget, Alamo, Avis and Hertz) vs saving a few DOLLARS ......... (pun intended) :lmao: .

Yeah, rent from Alamo. Last time I rented from Alamo at DIA, they made a big deal about having a receipt.

I rented from Dollar in January, returning on 1/12. Filled at the Hess station just before 417. No problem upon return and was not asked for a receipt.

I have never been asked by hertz for a receipt and use them alot at work. I generally fill whereever is easiest or skip it completely if the facility is just off the highway because I rather not get lost. Sometimes that means paying for not filling it other times it still reads full and many times it means a car that was literally just filled (whenever I drop it back off at work espeically as the gas station is in sight of the parking lot)

We fill up at one of the many reasonable gas stations within 10 miles of the airport. It is VERY simple to do so. Since I want the person who rented the car before me to do this, I choose to behave as I hope someone else did.

So we have the receipts.

But we've never been asked for them at any airport. We use Alamo and National.

Update - Called Alamo = For MCO they do not require a gas receipt (don't know about elsewhere). I booked with them & the terms I received in my email did not mention the need for a gas receipt - confirming info from my call. So DH & I are settled. :thumbsup2

Our going to MCO gas station is 14 miles away. I don't think that is too far. Who is to say what is really "fair" to the next rental person - 6 miles, 8 miles, 10 miles, 14 miles? Anyway, Alamo says the gauge showing "full" is fair, as ours will be.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I wouldn't be surprised if half of all renters heading from WDW to MCO on 417 stop at that Hess station to fill up.

I use that Hess Station. I make sure the tank is really full. Then I drive straight to MCO and return the car.

After that Hess Station, any other gas stations that are more-or-less on the way to MCO require you to exit from the 417 toll road, which involves paying a toll either to exit or re-enter. And we WDW visitors really aren't familiar with where those exits go.

On my next trip, I would be happy to rent a car that was completely filled at that station by the previous renter.

My complaint is with people who return are a car that still shows Full, but was last filled more than 50 miles ago.

Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty are all the same company these days.

Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. acquired Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. in November 2012.

The video is from 2011. It seems that one particular Dollar location came up with this scam.

Getting a receipt showing the final fill-up (and having it in your pocket) is still a good idea. Most gas pumps can print receipts for credit and debit card purchases.

If you take 417 to the airport and turn right when you're at the bottom of the exit for the airport there's a service station about a mile south on Boggy Creek that has regular gas prices. I usually fill up there before taking the car back.
We've rented cars many times and have never had to show a receipt.

We rented from Dollar at MCO from 1/31-2/3. We were told a few times by the agent that we would need to show a gas receipt for fill-up within ten miles of airport. We only drove to Universal and back to airport. We filled up at a 7-11 about 5 miles from airport. The car only took 1.5 gallons of gas. Upon returning the we gave the employee checking the car in the receipt. He stared at it for a long time and then checked the odometer very carefully. I actually like the policy and hope it is enforced that way I am ensured to get a car that really has a full tank of gas.

I have never been asked for a receipt although I always have one.
