I was out in the rain yesterday afternoon, and now I have a sinus headache that is causing me extreme pain if I even move my head (or sit up, stand up, etc.) I've tried taking Sudafed, but it hasn't really worked. I don't want to go to the doctor for something as minor as a sinus headache, so I was wondering if any of you knew any medications or home remedies that work well.

DH takes motrin when he has a sinus headache. He used to take claritin, but he said motrin works just as good.

Excedrin and a large Coke - my sinus headaches only respond to caffeine, and lots of it!

I can't take a lot of the oral sinus meds because of a heart condition. A few months ago the doctor put me on a medication (prescription) called Nasonex. I can't begin to tell you what a difference this has made. I haven't had a sinus headache since I started taking it. It's a nasal spray. I only use it once a day.

Ask your doctor about it and see if it's right for you. I've been plagued with sinus headaches my whole life and now that they're gone, I don't miss them at all! :p

Thanks, guys....Snoopy, when I was pregnant with DS and had headaches the doctor told me to drink hot chocolate (I don't like coke or coffee, but chocolate has caffeine in it too :)) to get rid of them even though pregnant women aren't supposed to have caffeine.....so that definitely might be worth a try. I'm also going to try the Motrin. I talked to my ex this morning and I guess he could tell from my voice that something was wrong so he asked what was wrong and I told him I had a headache that felt like a migraine but I knew was just a sinus headache....He told me to take an Aspirin (as if that would work  but I guess it was nice of him to care.)

Another vote for Advil Cold and Sinus. It works every time and doesn't make my buzzy or sleepy.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

This is one of those suggestions from my Grandmother that actually works. Try a long, hot, steamy shower. Make the water as hot as you can stand it, and stay in there for as long as you possibly can. Or, if you don't want to stand in the water, just run the shower and stick your head in there.

Of course, her other suggestion was to cut a potato in half and stick each half on either temple. Hold them in place with a pair of panty hose tied around your head. :teeth: I kid you not - this is an old Italian wives tale. I never tried this one myself (thank goodness the shower worked for me) but if you do, you'll have to let me know how it works. AND you'll have to post pictures, too.:D

I took the Motrin, am going to drink hot chocolate with my breakfast, and will try the shower but I draw the line at the potato thing LOL

if your sinus pain is on one side only it could possibly be a migraine headache...many people misinterpret sinus pain and even back of the neck pain...if it is one sided think migraine...that could be why the caffeine works (good migraine relief for minor headache)

excedrin is good - it is tylenol/aspirin and caffeine so you can do it your self with 2 extra strength tylenol, 2 aspirin and a bottle of coke...

good luck

Duchie,

I will second your suggestion - A long Hot Shower with lots of steam...no need to run the fan.

Never heard of the potato trick...my family has Irish roots, you'd think they would have been all over anything with a potato!

Feel better honeywolf7!

Princessloversmom, it's only on the left side but I assumed that it was sinus b/c I have a stuffy nose as well but it feels almost like there's a vein throbbing in my head and I'm not liking light very much right now which seems more like a migraine.

When my head gets that bad, I put ice in a ziploc bag and wrap it in a towel. I go to my bed or couch and lay with that behind my head and neck with my eyes closed. Sometimes, this is the only thing that helps, especially when I've tried all of the sinus drugs and it just keeps getting worse.

I can't imagine that looking at the computer is helping much.

For *sinus* headaches, Advil Cold & Sinus for me. For normal headaches, I usually stick with Advil and if tha doesn't do the trick I usually just suffer. ;)

Hope you feel better soon, Becki

Definitely agree. If you are in pain, turn off that computer and go rest. The WORST thing you can do is sit in front of that screen. Will just make it worse.

(Don't worry...the Dis will be here when you get back)

Actually your ex's idea wasn't that stupid (which ex is that anyway, I'm having kind of a hard time keeping track ;) ). The active ingredients in migraine medicine are aspirin + tylenol + caffiene. If you have a really bad headache, the combo should take care of it. If I didn't have any migraine stuff, I'd just take whatever I had on hand and drink some coffee or soda. The caffiene causes the blood vessels to constrict and since dilated blood vessels are often a cause of headache, it should make you feel better pretty quickly.

Whenever I've had any type of headache, I stay far away from tvs and computers. They only make the headaches worse. Walking away from the computer for awhile would be a good idea. It might make the pain go away.
