Anybody have problems with nosebleeds...

DD14 has allergies and gets these horrible nosebleeds. She doesn't use the steriod nasal spray, only saline spray, for that reason. Sometimes she'll get several a day and last week it was coming out her mouth as well and also with clots. The nurse in the primary's office asked me if I'd ever seen any of these bleeds, infering to me that they might not be totally believing her. But we've all seen her and they happen in school, etc.

She has an appointment with an ENT in an hour and any advice you can offer will be appreciated. During her last allergist appointment, she'd had two in school before the appt. and he checked her nose and replied that it looked fine now...

Just don't want to leave the ENTs office today without an answer.

My DD (16) has them at times, too. It seems to be worse in allergy season or when she has a sinus infection. When she has one, her nose just starts poring blood all of a sudden for no apparent reason at all. When this started happening, I took her to her ped. to see if there was high blood pressure or some other medical problem causing it, but thankfully there isn't. She does take claritin during the worst of allergy season, but really doesn't like to use saline spray or steriod spray. DH said he used to have trouble with nosebleeds as a kid, so maybe it has a genetic component??

Hope you are able to get an answer from your ent today or at least something that will help stop this. Keep us posted.

Both DDs are adopted so we have no idea of their medical history. That's one reason that I tend to be a bit more concerned about things that might be considered routine but could actually be an underlying serious issue. She also has asthma.

DD12 still gets ear infections and we were just to this same ENT last week for that. He said to just give her decongestants at the first sign of a cold but she's a tired kid to begin with and I hate giving her something she doesn't need.

Anyway, I just hope he doesn't see us coming through the door and say THEM again....

We're back and she had issues that the doc feels have been resolved by cauterization. Two days in a row now I've been really stressing about this, so I didn't do the WATP either day. Like that'll help my weight loss or DD.

But tomorrow's another day, so it's up and at 'em and walk at least two miles... or maybe I'll go for the three mile that I've only done once before!!

Lois, how scary it is when our babies are ill, I don't care how old they are, Travis is 28 and I <i>still</i> get stressed and want my comfort foods.

Okay, you get a pass on those WATP tapes this time but tomorrow you'd better hop to it Seriously, if you can't do the tapes until this cauterization is all over it isn't all <i>that</i> bad, right?

Hang in there, come here and vent on WISH when you feel stressed, that's what we are here for.

How did it go with the ENT?

I suffered with severe nosebleeds for *years* (I'm talking fill-up-the-sink with blood) -- even after numerous cauterizations. I finally found relief when I saw my wonderful ENT for the first time and he found a "bleeder" capillary higher up in my nose and sealed that bad boy off. I've not had a bad one since, and it's been several years. I was fortunate that my doctor was really thorough and didn't just stop at the first bleeder he found, as the others had. Of course nosebleeds can be a sign of something else, so it's always good to follow up on that, too.

Barring that, a couple things that have also helped were to keep the nasal passage lubricated with a little bit of Vaseline (or Bacitracin right after a nosebleed). In the Prevention Dr's Book of Home Remedies, they recommend using a decongestant spray and pressure against the nose as well as an ice pack at the back of the neck. That was always effective for me, enough to get the scary bleeding to stop.

I can imagine how stressed out you are about this. I hope you find the answers you need to make your dd's nosebleeds stop.

The ENT cauterized a bleeder today, even though this was her first visit with him. She'd had one on the way to the office and he spotted the problem area right away.

He gave us a list similar to the suggestions you made. Her pediatrician had always told her to hold her nose way up where it connects to the face. He also corrected that!

I don't know if I would ever call having a nosebleed lucky, but at least the one your DD had on the way to the ENT was well-timed. I'm glad he was able to spot her problem bleeder and cauterize it. Hopefully this will take care of her problem.

Those nosebleeds can sure get scary, especially when they are so severe! I don't blame you for being stressed! You'll get back to the tapes when there is time. Besides, you may have worried a pound or two off, who knows?

I don't get nosebleeds, so I didn't read this until now. Glad I did. I happen to have the BEST pixie dust ever to help cope with nosebleeds... I'll send a batch straight off to you!

Hope you get back to WATP! You need to take care of yourself - walk off some of that stress and worry!

Good luck to your DD. I hope that the nosebleeds are history now and that she won't have to suffer through them anymore. Poor dear! Those are messy things!!! Yuck!
