My almost 19 year old daughter has applied and is waiting to be accepted into a program to become a certified vet tech. She loves working with animals and really wants to do this as a profession. I, however, am very concerned about salary potential. Around here it seems very low, around $20,000 a year and the highest I've heard is around $30,000 after 10 years experience in the field. It seems to be a career that you do more for love than for money. Anybody have any information to the contrary? I'd love to hear it!

I want her to persue her dreams but I also want her to be realistic about her financial future. :confused3

My sis is a tech. She said that, yes, that is low but if she gets certified she can make more. She can also take higher learning classes and get certified in other areas: dental work, emergency surgery care, ultrasound, optical, etc.

Jobs in the animal field don't make as much as, say, a human doctor but if she likes her job that is what matters.

Being a tech also opens the doors for being a pharmacutical rep -- big bucks there.

She also says it increases her chances for marrying a doctor. ;)
