We are planning on driving straight thru, leaving about 3:00 PM from the Chicago area... She handles the local trips very well, normally sleeping, but has never been stuck in the car seat for 16 hours...
Although we did not have a 7MO, we did have a 3 and 4 YO.
We drove straight through, NJ to Orlando. 17 hours and it was fine. We are doing it again in 265 days!!
I suggest a TV/VCR with baby tapes. Barney, Einstein, and any others you can think of. Let them be new to the baby though. I would introduce the baby to videos now and see how long of an attention span he/she has for them. Also, bring lots of finger foods, cheerios, raisins, etc... Leave at night and let the baby sleep most of the way and by the time he/she wakes you will almost be there. If the baby seems irriitable you may need to stop at rest stops along the way to get out and stretch and play.
Also might help if mom or dad sits in the back for part of the trip. Also make sure to bring favorite items, blankie or whatever your baby feels comforted by.
We did it with a 7 month old. We didn't bother with the TV for her because she couldn't see it since she was rear-facing in her car seat. We just had lots of toys and books and snacks. she slept a lot and when we stopped we made sure she got to bounce around a lot--she stood up on the seats in the car and bounced and we rolled her around and played hard! About 15 minutes of this and she didn't mind too much getting back in.
We were lucky that all her dirty diapers happened just a few minutes before a planned stop! It must have gone pretty well because we did it again for her first birthday!!!
