I was there before, during and after the bombing. No noticeable difference.
My experience was the opposite. I just returned from a 10 day stay and every park, on every day of my visit, searched much more thoroughly than they had during my visits just a month earlier.
Bag checks are never completely effective in and of themselves, but they can be an important part of a larger security plan. As others have stated, they provide a good way to allow the crowd to be checked out using means in addition to the bag checks. It should also be noted that a number of firearms have been found via the bag check, so apparently it is somewhat effective.
I agree. Not only does it slow down the crowd to be scrutinized, but also serves as a deterrent. Psychos with weapons may chose an easier target.
As mentioned above, even a quick search should be able to turn up a gun.
