They warned me his acne would get worse before it got better but, unfortunately for him, his is cystic and he's had to go back on Tetracycline. I'm not a big believer in antibiotics either but the kid's in highschool and that's hard enough so I don't want him feeling self conscious on top of that.
His dermatologist also recommended the Cetaphil cleanser because it's less irritating (he found the ProActiv to be drying too). He's scent and texture sensitive so it's hard to find something that doesn't have a scent to it - the texture part he just has to accept - it's cream or lotion, it's going to be wet ...
I'm subscribing so I can also see what everyone else is using. I think the Wal-Mart product someone was referring to was called "Bye Bye Blemish"
Disneyglobegirl said:You might want to check out the link for the acne board - there are alot of posts about different products - I use the gentle cleanser that is sold on that site and I really like it - very gentle.

Disneyglobegirl said:For adult onset acne in women sometime it is an imbalance with your hormones - You may want to ask your Derm about Spironolactone. This is the same thing in Yasmin that helps so many, it is not however a birthcontrol. My SIL did 3 rounds of Accutane (she would get clear then her acne would come back) then finally her derm put her on Spironolactone and she is clear for the first time in years. I've just started spironolactone to see if it will help my skin. So far I am clearing but not completely clear yet. On the plus side it also gets rid of extra water weight - lol so I have lost a couple pounds since starting it too. Here is a forum for acne and I'll put in a link for the spironolactone thread. Not everything works for everybody but if you have acne and have tried everything and nothing helps I'd look into Spironolactone.

Smells like butt - but clears up acne like no one's business. I promise.
justjulie said:I really worry about Accutane at such a young age - it's a SERIOUS drug and my son doesn't like needles either. My husband took Accutane at 25 and it worked but there were side effects like bleeding hands and feet and the passing out from the blood tests ... I'd rather not go down that route if I don't have to - not that my son has to worry about birth defects in a fetus but those kind of warnings make me seriously wonder if anyone should be taking it ...

The dial antibacterial and benzoil peroxide keep the big deep ones away, but I still get the superficial ones.
I have the mirena IUD (for just one more month, yay!) and it really messed with my skin.
That is really good info to know, thanks for hunting for it.Disneyglobegirl said:ETA : Yep I just found a warning for those that have a family history of breast cancer to not use it. I had to hunt for that info but that is good to know - so if anyone has a family history of breast cancer you may want to avoid the use of Spironolactone. Also read a report about a long term study of the use of Spironolactone for Acne and it has been found to be safe long term for those who can use it.
Imzadi said:I'm getting adult acne for the first time. I get major WHITEHEADS that just don't clear up. Also red pimples that last like a month!
What can be done about these whiteheads? They are hard, white little bumps under the skin, not ***** & popable.
BTW, what do people mean when the acne is "cystic"?
corie161 said:The newest craze in home parties in our area is Norwex, enviromental friendly cleaning products and body products. They body rags that are made from a microfiber material and you basically wash with that and warm water and it apparantly helps with acne. I can't vouch for that product because I don't have an acne problem, but my sister does and she has used them for almost a month now and really likes them. Apparantly others do also.
Here's a link to the rags:

I'm not sure where there are consultants around, but it may be worth a shot if you can find one.
