Any remedies for facial acne (not proactive)?

My son's 15 and I bought the ProActiv kit for $100. They warned me his acne would get worse before it got better but, unfortunately for him, his is cystic and he's had to go back on Tetracycline. I'm not a big believer in antibiotics either but the kid's in highschool and that's hard enough so I don't want him feeling self conscious on top of that.

His dermatologist also recommended the Cetaphil cleanser because it's less irritating (he found the ProActiv to be drying too). He's scent and texture sensitive so it's hard to find something that doesn't have a scent to it - the texture part he just has to accept - it's cream or lotion, it's going to be wet ...

I'm subscribing so I can also see what everyone else is using. I think the Wal-Mart product someone was referring to was called "Bye Bye Blemish"

You might want to check out the link for the acne board - there are alot of posts about different products - I use the gentle cleanser that is sold on that site and I really like it - very gentle.

I really worry about Accutane at such a young age - it's a SERIOUS drug and my son doesn't like needles either. My husband took Accutane at 25 and it worked but there were side effects like bleeding hands and feet and the passing out from the blood tests ... I'd rather not go down that route if I don't have to - not that my son has to worry about birth defects in a fetus but those kind of warnings make me seriously wonder if anyone should be taking it ...

I agree. I also use the regimen found on www.acne.org . The benzoyl peroxide cream is a great big tube and it's reasonably priced. There is also a lot of good advice on this site.

For adult onset acne in women sometime it is an imbalance with your hormones - You may want to ask your Derm about Spironolactone. This is the same thing in Yasmin that helps so many, it is not however a birthcontrol. My SIL did 3 rounds of Accutane (she would get clear then her acne would come back) then finally her derm put her on Spironolactone and she is clear for the first time in years. I've just started spironolactone to see if it will help my skin. So far I am clearing but not completely clear yet. On the plus side it also gets rid of extra water weight - lol so I have lost a couple pounds since starting it too. Here is a forum for acne and I'll put in a link for the spironolactone thread. Not everything works for everybody but if you have acne and have tried everything and nothing helps I'd look into Spironolactone.

I think this is the one I can't use because of the strong family history of breast cancer :(

The dial antibacterial and benzoil peroxide keep the big deep ones away, but I still get the superficial ones.

I have the mirena IUD (for just one more month, yay!) and it really messed with my skin.

I've done Accutane four times. (Yes, four.) My sister twice and my brother once. My derm has asked a number of times if I'd like to try again on a lower intesnsity. I refuse so strongly. I will say that the bleeding hands and feet are very EXTREME! The usual side affects are that your skin gets dry (I used more chapstick will I was on that medicine then any other time in my life.) I too worried about how harsh this medicine was and if I should take it. My first course I was probably about 13 when I took it and the last time I took it I was 18. Obviously it wasn't the cure all for me that they thought it would be but for me there were no serious side affects. I would only reccomend it if a person had tried all other options (as I had and still have) and have had nothing work for you.

This won't work for sons but for me Yasmin has been the one thing that has kept me clear. For the first time in my life my face stays clear. Unfortunately I'm still pumping chemicals into my body which I hate but the plus side is it's less harmful then Accutane.

Spironolactone is an antiandrogen and blocks excess testosterone but should not affect estrogen levels - I wasn't aware of any warnings about breast cancer with it. I will have to check that out. There are warnings about watching your potassium intake since it is potassium sparing you need to limit foods high in potassium.

ETA : Yep I just found a warning for those that have a family history of breast cancer to not use it. I had to hunt for that info but that is good to know - so if anyone has a family history of breast cancer you may want to avoid the use of Spironolactone. Also read a report about a long term study of the use of Spironolactone for Acne and it has been found to be safe long term for those who can use it.

I'm getting adult acne for the first time. I get major WHITEHEADS that just don't clear up. Also red pimples that last like a month!

What can be done about these whiteheads? They are hard, white little bumps under the skin, not full of puss & popable.

BTW, what do people mean when the acne is "cystic"?

The newest craze in home parties in our area is Norwex, enviromental friendly cleaning products and body products. They body rags that are made from a microfiber material and you basically wash with that and warm water and it apparantly helps with acne. I can't vouch for that product because I don't have an acne problem, but my sister does and she has used them for almost a month now and really likes them. Apparantly others do also.

Here's a link to the rags:

I'm not sure where there are consultants around, but it may be worth a shot if you can find one.

And on another note - hello again Mr. Depp

Well, I'm not a consultant and like I said, not sure how many consultants there are around the US, but I think if you go to the website and click on either Host a presentation or contact us, they could tell you either my email or calling if there is anyone in your area.
