Any reason to buy direct?

Have been considering more seriously buying DVC. This is been something we’ve been thinking about for a while, and it seems to make more sense all the time. We don’t tend to travel to WDW during the busy fall season, and the studio is fine as we are just a couple with no children. We don’t travel every year, so were thinking that 50 points at SSR or OKW would be just fine. We do not live in Florida, so would not purchase APs, and although the lounge at Epcot is nice, that’s not a major selling point. I do understand that we would not be able to book Riviera or future DVC resorts. Is there anything else I should take into consideration?

Studios are hard ot come by these days so make sure when u do buy u buy into a resort you like. and book 11 months out.

50 points will not get you into the lounge at epcot or any other benefits for that matter. You need 75 minimum direct for benefits.

Hi
I think purchasing a small contract at OKW or SSR would be a great way to experience DVC ownership,,,,but I am biased as OKW is my home resort and I bought a small contract there and ended up buying 3 addons.
Keep in mind that studios generally are easier to book at the two resorts you mentioned however that may change in the future,,,best if you can book vacations in advance (utilizing the 11 month booking window).
Buy where you want to stay and won't be upset if you get locked into that resort only.
Good luck making your decision.

Edited to add: The Epcot Lounge or any other perks that Disney offers have never been worth it for me
and those perks can end at any time, I do have full membership though,,,just never interested in using it.
I'd also recommend buying a few extra points *try a 60-75 point contract instead of 50.
***Disney can and probably will make point variation adjustments over the lifespan of your contract***Be Aware.
Point requirements will vary by resort, unit size, and time of year. While the grand total of vacation points for a resort doesn’t change, DVC can re-arrange point requirements for individual nights across the calendar year. However, if one night increases there must be a decrease somewhere else to keep the total number of vacations points the same. The specific dates allocated across the “Seasons” will also change to accommodate Easter and Thanksgiving which are not on the same date each year. Quoted from DVC resale site

Yeah, I don't think you can buy 50 points direct from Disney, that would have to be through the resale market. I think 75 might be the minimum for buying direct.

I appreciate your responses. We like the layout and openness of OKW and SSR, so one of those would be our primary focus. We are taking a trip in August, so I may do an actual sit down with DVC to see what they can offer.

That is a great idea,,,before I bought in I made a trip down to Disney and did a tour of all the resorts,,fell in love with OKW and the rest is history.
*DVC will push their current resorts (RVV and CCV,,) just stand firm that you want OKW or SSR,or one of the other L14 resorts.
Have a great Holiday

Plan to come back here to confirm what the sales peope tell you. There's been more than one report where they mis-represented the resale restrictions which of course is to be expected as they are there to sell you on buying direct.

You do not travel every year....do you at least travel every other year?

If you do not travel every second year, your risk of breakage gets high, imo, and might make DVC not worth it.

50 points will not even get you a studio every other year, how long do you plan on going?

choosing between OWK and SSR - 1 expires in 2042, the other in 2057, thats something to consider.

If you can find something on the resale market that fits your needs. Outside of the future resorts restrictions, direct is just not worth it to me. And if you do not buy an AP, the biggest savings the thing offers is a non issue

We bought direct because we didn't want to worry about member v. non-member shenanigans later on, and I liked the Riviera rooms way more than I expected to. I want the option to stay there. That said, if you're going on a reconnaissance trip, here's some stuff to keep in mind:

First, don't schedule an appointment before you go. Head to a preview center, say you're toying with the idea, and wait for them to offer gift cards. I mean, they may as well buy you dinner.

Then go tour the rooms at SSR, but don't be intimidated to straight up tell them what you want. If you say "I love Riviera, its beautiful, but I can't get onboard with that resale restriction, and Poly/CCV/etc. has a better term length but is just too expensive to buy direct", they'll stop pushing (if that's what's happening) and tell you what they can offer in terms of the others. They'd rather make a sale than lose one.

We hadn't been to any of the other resorts, so we concluded the first appointment by determining what was available and saying we'd be in touch after we visited them. "I thought I was sure about X, but now I'd like to visit Y, just to be sure." Easy out.

You can get studios at OKW for 10 points per night in January, Sept and the first half of Dec. Just book them at 11 months out because they go quickly. Plus the OKW studios are the only ones with two real beds.
