Any owners out there that rent every other year?

Ugh, I think I knew there was a 160 minimum...but forgot about it. Hmm, booking at BLT at 7 months will probably be nearly impossible for a while right?

Booking any resort during slow seasons exactly at 7 months is very likely. It is true that BLT owners are more likely to book at BLT than elsewhere but consider:
owners do trade out
owners do book other DVC
owners wait and can't book their own resort before 7 months due to schedule
owners cancel travel plans
owners points for sale generally have no reservations in place
Unsold declared inventory helps
Rofr points

After a couple trips to BLT the owners will explore other resorts more. If you need BLT for the holidays you better buy it but otherwise it will be accessible at other slow to moderate times. SSR at $60 vs BLT at $100 and I'll take my chances.

Just remember that you can buy in resale at 25 points..(I did this). Then you can buy the points you really want as an add on and still not reach the 160. I bought 25 at OKW so I could get VGC (125). I'm using my OKW (bank/borrow) to stay almost a week in January. Then I'll decide if I want to keep them or not. Either way I'll have gotten almost my value out of them and gotten the resort I really wanted with the amount of points I wanted.

I have read that Disney is now letting people split their purchase of 160 into smaller contracts and at different resorts.

I think someone posted they get 120 BLT and 40 AKV and got the lower price per point incentives of $98.00 for BLT and $96.00 at AKV (with member referral).

But I bought in through resale with a small contract at VWL so I could add on at BLT with less. I ended up realizing that I just wanted BLT so I am selling VWL to re-buy at BLT, but it did allow me to get in at BLT with only 130.

Good luck!!

That would be me. I am finalizing the contract right now but am buying 125 BLT points and 45 AKV points. Originally was going to do 120/40 for the 160 total but decided after doing a lot of reading that a few extra points will come in handy over the years; especially with the point changes that have occurred for next year.

Now, if you really wanted too (and it depends on how badly you only want your 112 BLT points), you could buy your 112 BLT points and then either 48 SSR or AKV points to get your 160 total. Given the quick resale market for 50 and below contracts, you could sell your 48 AKV fairly quickly for a small loss. Currently the going rate for resale AKV points is $92 to $96 a point for small contracts and the current incentive price for AKV is $96. It would be a hassle and I wouldn't do it but it would allow you to get exactly what you want with a minimal loss. Just a thought!

If you look at it carefully, the return on investment for renting DVC is relatively modest---usually between about 3-10% depending on the circumstances---and renting is a lot of work. If you want to be a timeshare landlord, you'd do much better owning other timeshares which command lower rental rates but cost pennies to purchase vs. DVCs dollars, and so give you a significantly better return.

Maybe so but then I couldn't enjoy Disney every other year myself.

Buy Disney to use. Buy something else with a better rental ROI to offset the costs of your own usage.

Agreed. Personally I would be scared of what might happen if I rented my DVC out and they trashed or damaged the place. Just not worth the worry.

It might be for a short time, but long-term I think it will be bookable as long as you are happy with lake view and don't need to travel during peak times.

BLT is a pretty large resort with more than 300 rooms, so I'd expect it to be bookable once the initial rush to stay in the new place has worn off. I suspect only owners will get MK views or the cheap standard view rooms, but other than that, I expect BLT to be doable at seven months outside of peak time slots.

I agree with you, I think BLT will mirror BWV. If you want standard or BW view be prepared to travel off season or be VERY lucky at 7 months.

For us MK view is what we want so we bought - other than that we would not have bought there.
