Any non-runners trying to be a runner out there?

Matt's got great suggestions....it not a matter of a training program but getting comfortable and running within your capabilities. I find as a coach most folks who can only sprint are actually running way way too fast. Relax and just try to goa little faster than you can walk.....note for all of us there is a little speed band where neither walking nor runner works. You are just looking for than loping trot.
Loping trot? I love that!! I call it skootin....and it works! really works the quads...between run and walk, soft knees, less impact for knees and hips...but ur def moving faster than a walk....

came back from my physical, Dr has determined I definitely have asthma. He has prescribed me an inhaler to use before I go to run or speed walk for now. maybe I'll be able to do it now. Felt good to tell my mother she was wrong after all these years... haha !

Back in high school (16 yrs ago) I bought myself an inhaler OTC for gym class and softball. It worked great but she found it and yelled and screamed and repeats the story to this day. (My DR back then stunk and didn't listen to anything from me cuz I was a "kid") Well, now I have proof that I need it and most likely needed it back then too since it worked so well.

I couldn't even climb too many stairs without being short of breathe and I'm fat but not that fat.

I am having the same breathing problems and have decided that I also suffer from exercise induced asthma. I am doing the couch to 5k and it has made a huge difference. At first I couldn't run for 5 mins now I'm on week 6 and getting ready for my first 25 min run but the breathing thing is killing me. I think it's time to visit the Dr. and see what he has to say. I am determined to be able to run this 1/2 marathon in Jan. Not that I wish anyone ill, but it's nice to know I'm not alone.

Hi guys,

I am a non runner and I am trying to be a runner....

I can do the ellipitical, classes, weights, walking, biking but I can not run...I have trouble breathing and I feel I can't continue so I end up walking. It is really start to get me discouraged and doubt myself.
I'm a non runner also! Please don't get discouraged when you have to take walk breaks; when I started training for the princess 1/2 I took walk breaks every minute, then every two minutes as the race got closer. Even at the race I walked after every mile and towards the end it was every 1/2 mile. No where does it say you can't take walk breaks!

I got diagnosed in college, when I was growing up my mom used to tell me I was supposed to be out of breathe and feel sick after a swim race, it meant I was working hard! She feels bad about that now...and she has been diagnosed along with my aunts and a cousin!
It's amazing the difference those inhalers make!

I am also a non-runner trying to become a runner.
I am planning on the Princess 1/2 and have started training.
I appreciate all the great help and advice here!!
