Hiya

We are about to book our car hire via airline network and we have to use the additional driver option, as the VISA is in my name. However, Bruce said it would be nice if I could get the experience, but I am a little concerned about the drive its totally different to how we drive. My husband said its a women thing, but didnt mean it nastily. I was hoping to grab some encouragement from ladies who managed to drive out there or any feedback that might help with my decision, whether to book it in my name or in Bruces name.

Hope you can help.

Hi

I have driven many times over there.

Its so easy. I was a bit nervous the very first time I drove, but it really is nice. I don't drive a automatic at home and never had until then and got used to it straight away. The cars are so nice to drive, its not as difficult as you might think.
DH & I both drive and like to take turns driving over there, as we never get the chance of driving nice cars like jeep cherokee's etc here;)
Go on, you know you want to:teeth:

I love it
I can only drive an automatic anyway but had my first taste of driving in Florida only 6 months after passing my test in the UK.
I'd had to do a short 3 month intensive course (as DH was about to lose his license prior to major neurosurgery) so I'm sure you'll appreciate how nervous I was
I've driven on two subsequent trips and now it's DH's turn to be nervous as he decides whether to be added onto the insurance next year, now that he's got his license back :teeth:
Have fun.

The car's always booked in my name - because I'm the one who makes the holiday booking :)

Last year was the first time I drove more than 'just a little bit'. I went out a few times just with my DD and I found HAVING to drive actually built up my confidence. Taking responsibility for directions and stuff rather than going all girly and panicky lol

It really is easy once you get the hang of the road signs and things!

My DH likes to drive which is fine by me as he had a left hand drive car when based in Germany and thinks I am dangerous - this from a man who has had more accidents than me (I have had 1 in all 12 yrs of driving) :rotfl2: . I have driven over in Florida and it is fine. You may be more comfortable whilst you get used to it just keeping your eye on the white line, after a bit you'll be like a girl racer :rotfl2:

i hae driven twice over there now, love it.For some reason it starts to make more sense to drive the way they do in usa.It was when i came home that i nearly crashed the car! :bounce:

I've driven on all our trips but my husband never has even though his name is on documents.
If you're a cofident driver here you should be o.k in Orlando. Watch the drivers in the I-4 :confused3 in my experience everyone seems to going at 70mph.

:flower:

We split the driving 50/50 as we both love driving out there :cool1:

The car is always booked in my name as I book the holiday :sunny:

I've been driving for years more than DH :rotfl:

"... a women thing..." indeed !!!????

Hiya

Thanks for all your votes of confidence I will definately be looking to drive and will even put the booking in my name. I am a confident driver here, but was a little concerned with driving on the other side and I was panicing about pulling out on the wrong side of the road

Thanks again I really appreciate it.

Regards
Michelle

If, as you say, you're a confident driver here, you'll have no problems :sunny:
As I said earlier, I was dreading it but, as brer rabbit 28 says, it seemed to make more sense when I actually did it and I haven't looked back since :teeth:

.....still doesn't stop my DH quaking though when he's in the passenger seat..... ;)

I always enjoy driving in Florida - DH doesn't drive so I have to if we want to get anywhere. I even drove a 15 seater once when our 8 seater got upgraded and although a little daunted by the size at first all was OK - although some parking spaces were a little on the small size!! relax and enjoy it!!!

I suppose you girls find it easier driving a different car due to it not having the back window obscured by your cuddly toys. :teeth:

I did not drive in Orlando the first few times we went, we used taxi's and buses. One year I decided to take the plunge ( husband does not drive) after 10 minutes it was no problem at all.

Definitely go for it! It's really straightforward, particularly as you don't need to think about gears and roundabouts going the the wrong way! I never trust my partner to drive - he is not renknowned for his concentration in a car, or his sense of direction, and so I sit there 'driving' in the passenger seat anyway.

Go for it - you will be fine!

kristieuk - I have never come across a round-about in Orlando - my understanding is that they don't have many of them in the USA at all - i seem to remember one being installed but no one knew what to do and it became an accident blackspot! I think there equivelant is the four-way stop!

There is a roundabout in ClearWater which is the cause of great confusion ;-)

I to was nervous about driving in orlando but it is very easy, much easier than driving over here. I have to agree with sheluvsflorida that everybody seems to be over the speed limit on the I-4 we thought that we were the slowest car on there.

i didnt drive this time round.
I have no objection to driving in orlando and loved it. but i am also hyper concious of my kids in the car and often watch they are behaving while i'm driving. this female multi tasking thingy!!! lol so i opted not to drive this time round, but might the next time.

i am on the insurance details if i feel the need to drive.
