I've had IBS for about 19 years now, since I was about 6 years old. Its a condition I have learned to live with, but it can be difficult. I opted not to take any meds, basically because I took a few different ones when I was younger and they had some adverse affects. I know what triggers it (garlic, grease, heavy dairy, stress, lack of sleep, coffee, alcohol, etc.) and try to avoid those foods. Addtionally, focusing on less stressful thing, such a a good book or a favorite TV show or movie helps to distract me when I'm a lot of pain. Immodium has also been my best friend over the years and the relatively new Immodium Advanced has been a wonder for me. It flares up right before my period and I have been taking birth control pills since I was 16 to help that.
Good luck, I hope you find what works for you to control your symptoms...
