Honestly I know I need to start checking out more books at the library but I was wondering if there are any magazines you may recommend for someone getting into the world of DSLR photography?

You can also go to your local bookstore (ex. Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc), too. There are literally dozens of digital photography magazines you can flip through.

Some of large supermarkets in my area also have a few photography magazines, too.

My favorites are "Outdoor Photographer", "Shutterbug", "Popular Photography", "Digital Photo" (previously "PC Photo"). "Digital Photo" and "Popular Photography" are probably the easiest to read. There's also "Digital Photo Pro", which is probably geared toward intermediate+ amateurs.

My local bookstores also carry a whole bunch of British photography magazines, too. For some reason, the British seem to publish tons and tons of digital photography (and Photoshop) magazines. Don't skip over those magazines, just cuz they're British (although they're priced higher because they're imported).

As a Nikon shooter I would recommend two websites for great info. Nikonians.org and Nikon Cafe.

Nikonians is worth the $25 to join as a silver member. It is the largest Nikon organization in the world I believe. Great info and their traveling classes are great also.

Nikon Cafe is more like a disboard for Nikon owners.

Both are really good sources of info in my opinion.

I subscribe to Popular Photography and Shutter Bug. They are reasonably priced for a subscription.

I like Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian and Astronomy magazines.

Oh, you meant photography, never mind.

I get Popular Photography, American Photography, Shutterbug and then a whole bunch of industry-specific (business) related magazines that are dependent upon my membership into different organizations.

I'm thinking of leaving my laptop open to this page tonight....maybe it'll give DW some Christmas ideas:thumbsup2

I'm not to thrilled with the US photography magazines. I'll occassionally pick one up if I see an article that I find interesting, but thats about it.

The best photo mags (IMHO) are from the UK: Practical Photography, Digital Camera World and DSLR User are ones that I will buy at Barnes & Noble. You can get subscriptions, but they are on the expensive side (if you live in the US)... about $6-7/issue. Buying them here at the bookstore will run you $10-12. I find them MUCH MUCH better than the US mags. Better layouts, better articles, better pictures, lots more reader/user articles/features. LOTS more pictures (with EXIF info), many of them done by readers.

Just my $0.02.

I agree with handicap18. :thumbsup2

Although I rarely read the UK photography magazines, whenever I do browse through one, I'm always impressed by them. They seem to have a higher article-to-advertisement ratio in their pages, if you know what I mean. (for US magazines, there seems to be 2 pages of advertisements for every page of article (!!!) )

The other feature I really like about some of the UK photography magazines (I forget which one), is that they'll always have a 10-page "shoot with a pro" article, where a lucky amateur photographer takes photos and learns side-by-side with a professional photographer. As you're reading the article and following the pictures, it's as if you're right there learning directly from the pro.
