Any experience with older dogs and surgery?

Just an update .. I had to share because I can't express how overjoyed I am.

It's almost 1 week later and my sweet old GSD acts like she never even had this major surgery. Once she ran out of painkillers (which was yesterday morning), it was as if she just turned back on. She is playing, eating like a horse, and just aglow with life.

To think - I was minutes away from losing her and now, she's actually better than she's been in years.

I'm walking around with an even greater appreciation for the time we all have together and the time we have on this Earth.

It may sound silly, but I worry so much about her that I put a webcam on her favorite spot in front of our big window so I can make sure she's OK while I'm at work. I can't get enough of just watching her enjoy the warm sun. And I love that I can still see her.

Wonderful update Barb! I'm very happy to hear that your sweet girl has bounced back. Cherish every moment that you can with her. :goodvibes

Barb,

I didn't post but have been rooting/praying for your girl  So many of us going through so much with all stages of their lives Glad she got a new lease on life As far as the webcam I don't think that's silly at all thought of doing it many times too

Back with another update - all great news! It's a miraculous recovery. The stitches are out, her last follow-up visit is over, and she's chasing squirrels like she did years ago. Her vet told me "she's the reason I became a vet." And he was quite red-eyed when he said it. She did have cancer but hopefully it's all gone now.

Talk about a second lease on life - she sure knows that she had a close call and she is loving every minute of life now. She's dug out all of her old toys and she stays as close to me as possible (like she relishes every second together). And I was surprised that not only did she willingly walk into the vet's office (I had to drag her in every time before), she was also thrilled to see the vet. He even got kisses.

I can't believe it, but it appears we have a happy ending. :)

That is so wonderful! :goodvibes So glad she is doing well!

Miracle  God bless your Vet and his gift I love what he said

I have had my share of those in it either only for money or they lost whatever motivated them in the first place Truly inspiring to hear of a good one and this story of prayers answered Thank you

So nice to hear good news! So happy for you. :goodvibes

And BTW - my husband has cameras to watch the dogs too. He especially loves to watch while on vacation. We really miss them when we're not with them. :lovestruc

So sad to report that my girl left this world a few hours ago. She did well for awhile and then a sudden downturn. The doc said the cancer likely spread to her liver. She was surrounded by her small family and went peacefully. The surgery bought us a few months but they were more than worth it. The world is different without her but there is a new brilliant star in the sky.

So sorry to hear this, but glad you had those last few months. May she rest in peace.

The miracle was the extra months & will help you through the coming sad times. I went through something almost the same with Dillon ( Pointer in my picture line) oncologist in Aug 2012 and had him with us until 2 days before Thanksgiving 2012.

I agree and will look for that extra star tonight.

Oh, I'm so sorry from hear the sad news. I'm glad though that she was able to have a few good months before the cancer took over again. Keep your years of happy memories close to your heart. Your girl will always be with you! (((((hugs)))))

When I saw this thread I was hoping this was not what I would read.

I'm so sorry. I hope our girls are together at the RB playing in the sun. It is so hard to think of them not here with us anymore.

I am so glad you got that extra time with her. :flower3:

Thank you, everyone. This pain in my heart is horrible. She has left quite a hole in our lives. I really look forward to when I have a new normal and I'm not constantly thinking of her. I will never forget her, not ever. But my whole daily routine was centered around her and now I don't even feel like I know what to do. Her dog (and he was her dog... but I love him so) is the same way. He doesn't even know how to tell me what he wants because she always did that for him. I forget to check his water bowl or let him out because she was in charge of such communications. And he's technically less than 1/4 her size, so he doesn't have her .. influence.

I have been awake since 2 a.m. Tuesday, when I first sensed my girl wasn't "right." I'm so tired but my mind won't rest.

I really need this to get better soon. :(

It is going to take time. It hurts like hell no denying it. Focus on the other one who is confused and grieving too. Do it for HER ..draw strength from that. Engage with the remaining one, play, cuddle, cry tears in it's fur. One minute at a time Barb one minute at a time.

She is with you always right here:
