Any else go to Mexico for surgery?

Has anyone else gone to Mexico for surgery?

I did over nine months ago in Tijuana. Huge money savings!

Insurance wouldn't cover my procedure. I paid cash much less than I would out of pocket in the states. I had better care than I have ever received at a US facility.

My father retired to Mexico two years ago. Owns a B&B on the western coast, not super close to Mexico City but still near a pretty populous area. Also very near a few poor villages. He had to have gall bladder surgery last year, and was taken to a regional hospital. Raves about the care he received, and his out-of-pocket bill was less than a round of x-rays and scans I had WITH my insurance copays.

A friend's daughter is a MD at a major hospital in Mexico City. She works in a state-of-the-art facility, not some third world field hospital.

I haven't run into issues with any procedures I've needed stateside, but if cost was an issue I would have NO hesitation about getting treatment in Mexico.

I paid $4500 plus my flights for a procedure that would have cost me over $21K in the states as it was not covered by insurance.

I agree! I've had dental work done there, with flights, lodging, etc. I still paid only about a third of what the dental work would have cost me here. Very high quality, state of the art equipment. They had technology I haven't seen here! People assume I went into a back alley and was given a rag of ether for pain management lol. They even picked me up from the airport as well as to and from my appointments.

That's actually the one thing I have recently considered - my mouth is a mess and I have been looking into implants, but here it's big $$$ PLUS little-to-no insurance coverage. My dad suggested I check out the options down there so I just started my research!

I had mine done in Cancun, so if that's of interest to you I can recommend a Dr. She actually got all her training in the states and moved back to Mexico to be with family, so since she also has a US license, she can accept insurance if you have it. Plus, there's nothing like recovering on the beach with a margarita!

I had surgery in Mexico, I had the best care, doctors, nurses, and aides checking in on me almost every hour. I also had a huge private room with a beautiful bathroom. They had a futon for the person who came with me and the concierge got her what ever food she wanted even outside of hospital grounds. I would recommend it to anyone who needs something done that insurance doesn't cover in the US.

My mother in law fell ill on a cruise and we all got off in Mazatlán. My wife, her father, and my mother in law, all went to the hospital where she had emergency surgery. I stayed with the kids and watched the Disney Magic sail away without us.

I would not recommend going to Mexico for surgery like her.

I haven't done it, but would consider it if I needed something that wasn't covered by insurance in the US.

When we were in Costa Rica one member of our party broke a foot. Went to the local clinic (state of the art), had a visit with a dr., x-rays, air cast, crutches and pain mediation. Total cost was $50. It's been over a year and the fracture has completely healed and he has no issues with it.

When we were recently in the Bahamas I developed a UTI. Dr. came to the resort, took a full history, did an examination, did the lab work, and brought the antibiotic with him. $125.
