Any else go to Mexico for surgery?

I have a friend who bought her boobs there. She has no problems. TBH, it kinda made me think about it for a bit.

I live 15 minutes from the Mexican border, and I know lots of people who have gone to Mexico for procedures and surgery. And lots of people cross over for dental procedures. Even though DS and DDIL live in Texas, they had both of our grandchildren in Mexico (she has family in Mexico). But even with all this, I just can't get up the courage to have my teeth cleaned in Mexico.

My father in law went to Mexico last year and got about $25,000 worth of dental work done for $8,000. He traveled to Yuma, Arizona, stayed there, and made the 3 mile (I think) trek to Mexico for 5 days. He was satisified with it all.

A former co-worker had a condo in Yelapa for 20 years. Still goes back for dental and medical care top flight. But got rid of the condo because the crime rate soared, moved back to the states.

It would appear he actually got $8,000 of dental work done for $8,000. He would have been overcharged $17,000 if he had paid $25,000 for $8,000 worth of dental work.

So many assumptions about Mexico LOL. Don't believe everything that is sensationalized in the media.

My father retired to Mexico two years ago. Owns a B&B on the western coast, not super close to Mexico City but still near a pretty populous area. Also very near a few poor villages. He had to have gall bladder surgery last year, and was taken to a regional hospital. Raves about the care he received, and his out-of-pocket bill was less than a round of x-rays and scans I had WITH my insurance copays.

A friend's daughter is a MD at a major hospital in Mexico City. She works in a state-of-the-art facility, not some third world field hospital.

I haven't run into issues with any procedures I've needed stateside, but if cost was an issue I would have NO hesitation about getting treatment in Mexico.

That's the thing, much like anywhere, the quality of care will vary. I don't think I'd be too worried to have surgery done in Mexico City. I might be far more concerned to have it in a much poorer area of Mexico. I mean, the same is true of healthcare in the US. While maybe it's more consistent, there are certainly better cities for it, and even better hospitals in the each city.

Absolutely. And to characterize healthcare in Mexico as being subpar JUST because it's in Mexico is extremely shortsighted. I would go to a hospital in the most rural part of Massachusetts before you could pay me to set foot in some hospitals in other parts of the US. What's striking is that a procedure done in a hospital in Mexico City (equivalent of a Boston or NYC hospital) costs thousands of dollars less than the exact same procedure in a US hospital. Healthcare built on capitalism has not been kind to this country.

Oh yeah. My city generally has good healthcare, especially for pediatrics, but I also know which hospitals I don't want to be taken to If I get a say in the matter. Unfortunately, the more affluent the area, the better they are likely to be. Mexico City certainly has some very affluent areas, and I wouldn't be too worried at all to be in their care.

My dad lives in a pretty rural area, so I was happy to hear that he got such good care! I still can't believe how inexpensive it was too.

I hear similar things from a friend that married a British woman and moved over there 15 years ago. His healthcare costs are a fraction of what mine are but he's been well cared for whenever he's needed anything.

Not personally but I know many that have. I don't know why I never considered going there for dental procedures. I might need to suggest that to my mom, she needs some major work done and no dental insurance.

I guess I wouldn’t hesitate about it if it wasn’t covered by insurance here.

On a side note regarding medical costs in other parts of the world....
DH was recently outside of Tokyo for work. One of the guys he was working with had to go to hospital for hernia surgery. Ended up staying in hospital for 3 days (I think it’s outpatient in US), no complications they just wanted him to be able to recover peacefully. Amazing hospital in Tokyo. Guy had to pay out of pocket and seek reimbursement as they didn’t take US insurance. His total bill $600! Nope not missing a zero, only $600.

Where I went for major surgery in Tijuana was so clean. Great staff.

I can also fly to Bangkok for a complete work up, blood, stess, EKG, and more for thousands less than at a hospital here.

My total out of pocket for the tests $795 plus my air.

My uncle got a stem cell treatment there that is not yet available in the US. It did him wonders.

Trust me. Some of us need to buy boobs:(
Felt weird liking this, but I wanted to make sure you knew I read it.

I've never left the country and don't even have a passport so my Mexican boob buying is gonna be rather limited either way.
