I was wondering if there are any Diser's with Alopecia, of any degree for any reason.

I personally have Alopecia Universalis and must wear wigs, this presents a real problem in the heat and I was wondering how others handle this.

What do you do to keep cool under the wig?

Any special tricks or tips?

My rather primative remedy is to take paper towels, wet them with cool water and put them on my head, then put my wig on, this serves two things, one keeps my head cool until the towel dries, then it absorbs the perspiration. Then when I take a restroom break, I redo the papertowel.

Hopefully someone will give me some better tips.

Well, while for some that would be a perfectly sensible suggestion, but for me I feel totally naked without my wig. In the 39 yrs that I have had this condition only my kids and now deceased husband have ever seen me that way, I no longer even remove my wig for doctors, they just have to take my word for it and since this happened after I was married, even my parents and siblings never have seen me without my wig and God willing never will.

I know many would not be so moddest, but I am quite covered in my personal dress, you will never even see me wearing shorts, do even own a pair.

Have you tried looking at forums that are geared towards your condition? I think you might have better look seeking out a large group of folks with the same concern rather than the small amount of people that love disney that have that issue, you know? Even if people on alopecia forums haven't done Disney, they probably know how to stay cool with the wigs.

The only things I can suggest is either avoiding rides like RocknRoller Coaster or Everest...things where your wig could blow off, or finding a way to secure the wig to your head that you're comfortable with. Wig tape or a scarf or a snug fitting hat...do some test runs and see what works best for you.

This website has some headwraps and hats with cooling inserts.

I can find plenty of headbands or neckbands, but that's all I could find that would cover your head.

The posts in the past here have been more geared toward not losing wigs and/or head covers than in being cool. So, I agree with other posters that you might get a lot more answers on an alopecia support board than here.

This is a link to one fairly recent thread which had some head cover websites:

And this is a link to another:

There are several fairly regular posters here who have alopecia who will hopefully chime in about what they do as far as heat is concerned.

Well thanks anyway, I do not go on rides where I might lose my wig, first I do not like that kind of ride and obviously I would never chance it, I will give the links a try. Thanks for replies.

Have you ever tried putting an anti-perspirant/deodorant on your scalp? I've been known to put it on my neck or even my forehead because I will sweat excessively and it helps me.
I would try it around town to see if it works. Maybe on a quick trip out on a hot day incase it's not so good.

My hair is really really thin front and center, enough that I burn really bad without a hat and can't stand hats in the heat. I can't even imagine how hot a wig feels.

Well, that just might work, at least for a time and I can always reapply in the Ladies room. Nice tip. Thanks. Yes, it is very hot under the wig, sort of like wearing a woolen cap in the summer.

One trip to Disney will usually ruin a wig from the perspiration, usually I bring a new one along to wear home, but the one I wear to the parks is one that is about to bite the dust anyway as they are expensive, tho from the other thread links I am going to investigate my insurance to see if they will not pick up the tab for at least one or two a year. So this thread has not been a waste and I have learned something.

Thanks again.
