I'll use myself as an example (CRA) , just easier that way. We went on strike because our contract ran out 1 YEAR ago. The Union has been after the TB to talk and settle for a year. They would not talk to us. If you are part of a Union, you have to have a contract, plain and simple. We were asking for a 3% raise which is the going average raise rate in the private and public sector. If anyone is to blame here, its the TB (gov't) for not talking. I think 12 months is long enough to wait without taking action, lol.
They forced us into a strike....I, for one, certainly do not enjoy pounding on cement for hours, freezing my butt off and not getting paid. We certainly do not want to be taking it out on the public but we really didn't have a choice. Tick people off and they go to their MPs and they pressure the TB to settle...exactly what we want. People do not help by crossing over, just prolongs the whole thing (I do realize some people don't have a choice).
If we were rude and inefficient when NOT on strike, we'd be in trouble as well but on strike is a whole different situation. We were firm and not rude where I was but can't speak for other areas.
So we went after the "right" people for 12 months and now we are stuck doing this. We settle (CRA) and went back to work yesterday and for that, I'm very grateful because it was 5 weeks of non-stop stress and loss of wages over a tiny raise (2.5%) which should have been settle a year ago.
Sorry to anyone who is stuck waiting but I hope, maybe, this explained why we are striking. And maybe why a few people may be getting a wee bit testy, lol
