I arranged an Orlando vacation for my sister and her family. The night before they were supposed to leave my niece was in a serious car accident. The following morning (the day of their departure) my niece had to have brain surgery as the result of the accident. My BIL called American Airlines while she was in surgery to cancel the ressie. He was told they could put the credit of the existing tickets toward another trip and pay an additional $100. per ticket. I know this is the normal procedure but do they ever make an exception in a situation like this? If so, who should he contact? Thanks!

I would call American Airlines and ask for Customer Service. Sometimes if you write a letter and have a doctor's note they will waive that fee or possibly give you a refund. It is worth a shot.

Yes, I would certainly pursue this matter. It's a legitimate emergency request for chaage of tickets.
