Anti-Frizz Hair Tips for WDW?

I recently cut my hair short. It wasn't an on-a-whim thing. I actually had been planning it for one or two months. But now that it's short I have come across many problems... and I'm not a big fan of the length (should have left it an inch longer).

My hair always gets frizzy and wavy in Central Florida during the summer. Especially after the rain. My hair is very fine and thin... it used to be naturally straight, but now I've noticed that when it air dries, while it isn't straight, it's not curly... kind of wavy with random kinks.

How can I prevent my hair from frizzing, and keep it looking cute throughout the day?

I actually don't have an anti-frizz serum/cream/gel that I use, right now. My products are:

John Frieda Shampoo One
John Frieda Conditioner
Garnier Fructic Volumizing Gel
Chi Hair Straightener (the colored kind)
Some cutesy hairdryer that isn't that great... it's from Walmart or Target

See... this is my hair a gross, frizz mess, last year (in blue):

And here is my length, now:

It's going to look terrible!!!

Advice, please?

P.S. After looking at this picture, I have decided that there really isn't that much difference in the length from last year to this year.

I have the same hair, same problem with the Florida humidity, plus 30 yrs older. But no good answers for you...so I will be lurking to see what responses you get.

As someone with *very* curly hair, and using a special regimen, I can tell you this- stop straightening your hair, because it's causing heat damage, which is one reason your hair frizzes.

If I remember right, the shampoo and conditioner you use aren't ideal for wavy/curly hair.

Quick chemistry lesson- most shampoos have a harsh cleansing agent called a sulfate (if you look at the ingredients on your shampoo bottle, if an ingredient ends with "sulfate", it's one of the harsh agents). They strip the natural oils out of your hair. The same ingredient is in stuff like Dawn dish washing detergent. An example of how harsh it is, keep in mind that Dawn can wash oil off animals that have been in oil spills. Pretty harsh, right?

Because of how harsh that ingredient is, most conditioners have an ingredient to make your hair look healthy, and they frequently end with -cone. They're heavy molecules and the only way to wash them out is by using a shampoo like the one I just mentioned.

Vicious cycle, and it's possible to break it. Use sulfate-free shampoos and silicone-free conditioners. Here's an example of my hair before and after changing to those -free hair products:

I use Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat shampoo for shampooing my hair (I only shampoo 1x/week) and Curl Junkie Strengthening Hair Assurance conditioner (every day), plus Herbal Essences curling mousse (in the purple bottle)

So really, the best way to stop the frizz is to stop straightening and blow-drying your hair, if you don't want to change your shampoo and conditioner. In the mean time, pull your hair back and/or wear a hat!

If you're interested in knowing more about the whole caring for wavy/curly hair, look at www.naturallycurly.com or look for the book "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey- preferably the 2011 edition.

Hope that helps!

Eesh... I don't think I can not straighten my hair! At least not until it grows out...

I don't have really curly hair. It just has random waves in it.

I'm with you - I hate the Disney Frizz! I suggest stopping with anything labeled "volumizing" - that right there just adds depth and frizz. I use lots of straightening products and my hair dresser recommended a higher end straightener that doesn't damage hair quite as much as others. Regardless, I will always use one! The best advice I can give if you can foot the bill is to get a Keratin treatment - not something you want to do at home, it's a lot of work. It runs about $250 but it's so worth it - I get one every spring and my hair stays perfectly straight through the worst humidity imaginable - even Disney weather. All day at the parks and it still looks like I just straightened it. So worth the expense for me.

I would suggest using a Leave-In Conditioner. Other than that, I'm in the same boat as you when I get to Florida since I have wavy hair as well but I have medium thickness. I think I'm going to try a combo of strong hair gel and anti-humidity hairspray unless I'm able to learn of something else.

Are keratin treatments the same as Brazilian blowouts? the FDA is cracking down on the latter because it's so dangerous (more formaldehyde fumes than safe...ON YOUR HAIR)

FWIW, I never thought I couldn't not straighten my hair, but my hair takes so much less work now (I cut my hair styling time from about 1 hour to 10 minutes!), I don't think I'd ever go back to straightening daily.

I have a TON of hair that is closer to straight than wavy (the lady who cuts my hair reminds me every time I see her :lmao: )

Over the winter I cut bangs which look great but they are a disaster now that it's gotten humid out.

I was going to clip them back while in Disney but any suggestions for what to do otherwise?

Any good anti-frizz products?

Just had a conversation with my hairdresser regarding my curly hair. It seems to change as I get older. She told me that our hair texture changes about every 5 - 10 years. Mine has always been really curly and very thick. It is still curly but has gotten thinner as I've aged. I always use a really good shampoo and conditoner that I get from my hairdresser. I switch brands each time I buy them. But the best thing I came across for the frizzies is a product called Bio Silk Therapy. I put it on either wet along with a product called Totally Twisted or if I dry my hair I put it on after it is dry. It keeps my hair from getting firzzy in the humidity. I recommend it to everyone with curly hair. You can only get it at a hair salon though and I think it's about $12.00 a bottle. Since you only use a small drop it lasts a really long time too. I tried a sample my hairdresser had before I bought it.

If you go to naturallycurly.com, you may want to look at hair types- I'm guessing you have 2a or 2b hair according to their website, and they have tips on how to avoid the frizzies, whether you straighten your hair or keep it wavy. For reference, I have a combination of 3a and 3b hair (wide and narrow ringlet curls).

Even if you don't have curly hair or wavy hair, NC.com still has resources for how to avoid the frizzies. Personally, I've just learned to pull my hair back and keep a cap on, though soon I won't be able to do one of them...

TRESemme products make a great anti-humidity/frizz hair spray. I used it last year both at DIsney and in the Bahamas and it worked great.

I have naturally curly/wavy hair, and I just started using both Samy products and Marc Anthony products, and my hair loves em. I'm going to switch to the sulfate free shampoos too to see what a difference that makes. Good luck with your hair quest!

one of the BEST things I've ever used (and still use) is Living Proof No Frizz.

I get the "straight styling cream for medium to thick hair". It works like a charm. :thumbsup2 I got this before our trip last September. ( my hair isn't curly, it's just wavy and frizzy).

I would put this in and after I blow dried, I actually had "normal people hair"!!!! I know, that sounds silly. I used this all week and actually only flat ironed once or twice. The rest of the time, I just blow dried. It looked awesome all week and I was sold. Plus, you only use like a quarter size dab. ( my length is about the same as yours, maybe an 1" or 2" longer) to me, it's the most fantastic miracle stuff !

(you can also buy it at Sephora if you have one near you.....) :thumbsup2

Regarding Keratin treatments, they are different from the Brazillian Blowout. Keratin is much gentler and occurs naturally in the hair. The treatment adds more and the stylist uses heat to seal it in. I got one in mid-May and love the results. My hair has always been very wavy and gets frizzy in humidity. The Keratin treatment made it very straight at first, then after a week or so it had more body but was still shiny, soft and healthy.

My stylist does two versions of Keratin treatments - the regular and the express. The regular one costs $150 and is supposed to last up to 3 months. You can't wash your hair for three days after getting it. The express is $75 and is supposed to last up to 7 weeks. I got the express on May 11 and it's just now starting to get wavy again. It's still easier to dry and style and stays looking nice for longer. You can wash your hair within 8 hours after getting the express. I'm going to get another one on July 15 before we leave for our Disneyland vacation.

After getting a treatment, you have to use a special sulfate-free shampoo. It was pricey - about $20 a bottle - but you only need a little and I still have half the bottle left after 6 weeks. One drawback (for some people) is that you can't swim in the ocean or a pool or it will undo the treatment. I'm willing to stay out of the pool if it will keep my hair straight!

I hadn't even thought of my hair frizzing next month in Disney! I went out last night to Target and bought my new favorite hair product Aussie Anti Frizz cream. My hair looks and feels amazing!

I have purchased the John Frieda Frizz Ease serum and tried it for the first time, today. I honestly can see a huge difference. I live in SC, and the humidity is really high here, so I'm hoping this was an accurate test. I will be at WDW Friday, so we'll see if it holds up!

If you have a beauty college near you check that out. They have a smoothing treatment (much like the $250 ones) for $65. I will be setting up an appt. to get mine done here soon since we will be going at the end of August for our trip. I have done the $250 ones and WOW is all I can say. My hair actually moved when I shook my head. That got me sold on it big time. But the last time I went to get it done, I think my hairdresser used old stuff cause it did nothing and I couldnt afford to do it again. Im hoping this will work since it is so much cheaper. I had my hair highlighted and cut there and it was FANTASTIC and only cost $37.
I understand about not being able to go without a Chi. I need to use mine constantly and even when I pull it back I need to use it to smooth out the hair before I put it in a ponytail. And me and hats don't make a good match :)
