This is really for people with little or no experience waitlisting because there have been a lot of threads about it lately. Be assured, the process works. Not all the time, mind you--I have had a time or two where a waitlist didn't come through--but basically the process is just as it sounds--a waiting game. You must have a back-up plan you can live with, and then you need to be patient and pay attention to your reservation.
Yesterday, which was the last day I could stay on the waitlist (at the 7 day mark), I had a studio come through for the last day of a reservation for some friends we are traveling with starting Friday. I was prepared to call every day to try and get the room we were looking for even while we were there to keep our waitlist active day-to-day, but we had a back-up room and everybody had made peace with the fact that our friends might have had to move their last night.
This is the closest it ever came for me, and we were on the waitlist for this night since May or June. My only point is that it is a process that takes time, and it often works out, but you need to have a back-up plan and not put all your eggs in the waitlist basket.
I hope this helps quell some anxiety for others.
