Another week, another shooting

So, this was another mentally disturbed guy with a legal firearm. He was a Marine with extensive firearm training and a history of mental illness who refused to seek help but was allowed to own a firearm. There is a serious problem in our country.

Thing is, this is not a gun problem. The problem is that human life is not valued.

A person who wants to take lives can do it with or without a gun; remember that the worst American terrorist event (in terms of loss of life) was perpetuated by Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma City, and he didn't have a gun at all. Similarly, I can't remember the name of the guy who just ran over a bunch of people with his car. With or without guns, evil-doers can take lives. We have to focus on the real problem, not the tool with which all-too-many people commit the crime.

The increasing number of these mass shootings is just unacceptable in a first world country. I'm going to see a concert next week in a historic venue, I'm not one to be afraid of much anything, but I have to say, it did give me pause.

To those who have been effected in a much closer way, I'm sorry for your experience. No one deserves that.

ETA: one thing I do enjoy about WDW is that I feel physically safe. I mean, you can become road kill because of some inconsiderate putz, but I don't think they'll be a shooting or a bomb. That's nice.

That's a very good question. Nothing will change until Americans can figure that out.

I agree, but explain the Swiss - they have loads of guns and we don't hear of constant mass shooting incidences. What's going in America at an even more fundamental level, right? I think it's lack of (mental) health care resources.

ETA: This same lack of health care resources is probably why our drug crisis is so shocking.

Why? Every time I get in my car and get on the road, I am taking the small risk that I will be in some terrible car crash that ends my life - maybe a distracted, tired, or intoxicated driver.
Every time I walk into a school, museum, restaurant, shopping mall, concert, grocery store, church, airport baggage claim, etc, I am taking the small risk that some random gunman starts shooting and ends my life.
Just a fact of life.

Because no mass shooting is ever an accident.

Swiss people are required to obtain a permit to legally own a gun:

@amberpi ah but remember Switzerland, like my country is a neutral country. We dont go to war, we are part of the UN Peace Keeping Corps. The Swiss culture and attitudes towards active warfare are very different to America.

That's another part of it, but I didn't want to get into the whole American military industrial complex issue, and I DO think that our lack of resources for the mentally ill is appalling.

Every Swiss male must join the military and is trained, they just do not give a gun to anyone. That is the issue, many countries allow gun ownership, but they also have safety laws

The British own about 1/3rd of your country. British soldiers roamed the streets on patrol up until not long ago. Had your people in Ulster had legal guns that might not have happened.

I totally agree with you. In this case it seems that the murderer's mother tried to get him help and he refused. Mentally ill people should not have access to firearms. Full stop.

thats ok, I just wanted to point it out as some may not be aware that we, Ireland and Switzerland are neutral countries During this past summer we had a heatwave in Ireland and the ground was so dry that it revealed signs in the ground from World War 2, signs that could be read from the air telling bombers that they were in Irish airspace.

*Every physically and mentally fit Swiss male. With socialized healthcare in Switzerland, the chances of a person mentally unfit to possess a firearm getting one is much lower. I don't think there is very much of the "hobby" gun ownership in Switzerland like there is is the US.

the issue between the British and Irish, the troubles in the North and the history of my country Im not going to debate in this thread. If you want to create another thread I will gladly educate you on the history of my country and the very complex issues of the north of Ireland which go all the way back to Oliver Cromwell and his invasion of Ireland in 1649!

The majority of these shooters were known to have MAJOR mental problems and most got their guns legally either bought or from a family member. This is not rocket science, when do we figure it out

I read these threads but rarely comment except to give thoughts and prayers for those involved.

I just can't wrap my head around a human plotting, planning and carrying out killing another human(s).
