Another tipping question!

DH and I always argue about how much to tip at pizza places. I'm talking about the places where you walk in, order your food at the counter, then get your own drinks. All the employees do is bring the pizza to the table when it's ready.
DH always wants to leave a $3-$4. I really don't think anything is necessary, but will leave a buck. If they actually help us in some way, like refill our glasses, then I consider a tip necessary. Am I being cheap???
How do you tip at counter-service pizza joints?

Even at places like this, we leave at least a dollar a person. They often carry away dirty plates and refill drinks.

At our favorite pizza place we fix out own drinks and when the pizza is ready we have to walk to the counter and get it. We also bus our own table so I don't leave a tip. (There is a jar on the counter)

If they bought the pizza to us I would tip a dollar or two, more if they bussed the table.

I have a counter service pizza place that I go to that they give you your own cup to get your drink and all they basically do is bring the pizza to you,at these places they might have a tip jar to leave a buck but there is usually no other tipping involved. If it's a pizza buffet place where a server gets your drinks and refills and clears the table of plates then I'll leave $1-$2 more than the amount of people in the table,3 people $4 or $5,4 people $5 or $6 etc..

We leave a dollar more than the amount of people in our party...2 people = $3, 3 people = $4, etc.

We have a place like this near us, too, and I don't tip, since I am doing all of the work except carrying out the hot pizza.

This is how our pizza places work except they only offer bottles or cans of drinks. The employees do not bring you the food or clear your table. I usually don't tip either. If I have cash, I may toss $1 or two into the tip jar but I usually just pay with a cc.

I have not been to a counter service for pizza, but we do have a place for burgers and other foods.

We order and pay for the food upfront and then find a seat. They give us a "number" stand to place on our table and bring the food to us. There is no table settings for them to clear away afterwards (we do) as it is all disposable/recycle.

Quite honestly it has never occured to me to leave a tip at the table. I have never noticed any other patrons leaving a tip either.

I usually don't tip at places like that. The employeesare paid a regular minimum wage or more. Regular wait staff gets a lot less and depend on tips.

I guess I am getting sick of seeing tip jars everywhere!

I am thinking of putting one on my kitchen counter...can't hurt. I am definately paid less than minimu wage!

I generally would not tip in a place like the OP mentions.

It just about kills me to tip 18% at buffet places at WDW. I don't find it justified. I'd rather tip the cooks in a buffet restaurant than the servers who only bring me drinks and the bill.

:thumbsup2

Except my kids would be asking me for a couple bucks to put in the tip jar!

when I did a search I found one thread and the average the others tip at WDW buffets was 10-15%

If the pizza place is part of a bar or similar establishment (think Turoni's in Evansville, Indiana), I will tip appropriately.

If it's a place where I go to the counter order my food and fill my own drinks, etc. - no tip.

In fact, Papa John's has a few locations with booths for on-premises dining - but it's really "bare-bones" and no, they get nothing extra from me.

Of course, you will have some around here who seem to have loads of dispoable income who will tip "all of the above"...

We have that in this country, too -- it's called Hardee's or Carl's Jr. -- both chains are related and they're pretty much everywhere in the U.S. (except for the northeast).

I always want to write down on a scrap piece of paper "do you not get paid?" I mean the folks who work for those vile franchised coffee chains are paid a good wage to do a job that basically requires very little in the way of technical knowledge, and several university degrees, they are not curing cancer or saving the world!
