Another thread about the "War on Christmas"

I was just reading these and thinking, why do we say "merry" Christmas anyway? I mean Merry? Do any of us use the term "Merry" on any other occasion, do you say Merry New Years or Merry Halloween, Merry Thanksgiving. Not that theres anything wrong with that, just interesting if you think about it. I'm going to try and have a merry week, then a merry weekend. I think I'll start using this word more. Its growing on me.

There used to be a cleaning service called Merry Maids. :thumbsup2

I like the way you think! Merry Monday to you!

Well said.

I imagine all those saying Merry Christmas to others in the same way (including one already in this thread) are still good people. :rolleyes1

while I will agree it is wrong from either side...

re' Nuke's deal: it is the intention of purposely provoking a response from someone rather than actually wishing them well that is wrong....you should be saying it with good intentions or not all if you do not actually mean it!

What is it about deliberately provoking a reaction from someone do you find honorable or humorous? Unless you're a 16 year old kid deliberately trying to annoy adults-which is a 16 year old kid's job-it's no more mature than those who overreact to it.

Why should saying "Happy Holidays" blow someone's gasket in the first place? My goodness. How can someone be so petty as to chew someone for wishing them a happy holiday season. As to motivation, I fail to see how anyone could ever take someone else wishing them Happy Holidays as provocation unless there was a word such as Dwad at the end of it. Someone ever chews me for wishing them a good holiday or Merry Christmas in the form I chose, well that's their problem.

Oh by the way.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!

I guess for the same reason people blow a gasket over "Merry Christmas" or getting a card with Jesus on it.....That's a very merry point you make, though!

And don't let the fact that virtually nobody blows a gasket over such get in the way of a good retort.

Ooooo. Thanks for reviving this debate which hasn't been run into the ground just yet. I think there are 2 or 3 DIS'ers who haven't weighed in yet. :teeth:

Make that now 1 or 2 Dis'ers. Today is the first time I've seen this debate. :bitelip:

Hi all  I've been in DIS purgatory the last few weeks (AKA WPASADI ) :teeth: I'm just checking to wish a Merry Christmas to all my DIS friends who celebrate Christmas and Happy Holidays to all my DIS friends who don't. (Is that the PC way to do it? I am so behind the times.)

OK... Gotta go back to WPASADI now or my head will explode.

And merrily I say unto you that such a gasket has been blown over Christmas cards on this very board!

One more thing -- retort is a pretty harsh -- the only way anyone could get mad about any of this is if they are trying very hard because I'm just kidding around -- want to blow a gasket? Knock yourself merrily out!

Really? A pool hopper thread by any other name. So how many fish did the troll catch on that line?

I certainly have never gotten anyone's temper up by wishing em Merry Christmas either on the loony bin known as internet chat boards or off it.

Actually, it was a very big catch. I felt like the only one saying, "Really? Christmas cards are offensive?" It seemed to be quite the majority opinion that they were very offensive.....I think both sides fall under the "People who are too easily offended" file on this board.

Anyway, I think it was the OP of this thread that started at least one of the "Christmas cards are offensive" threads. I may be wrong, but I know he was a contributor, at the least.

Really, you are pulling my leg, right? You don't remember all those posts about people being offended by receiving Christmas cards?

When I say happy holidays its because theres New Years too. I shorten everything. Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas and Happy New Years. I also use it when speaking to large crowds, like +300 people. There are many holidays and I want everybody to be included. Im not naming every winter holiday, because there are more than just the usual 3. I think everybody should say anything they want regarding holidays. I went to a chaunakah party on saturday, somebody said Merry Christmas (although the decorations and invitations clearly gave away it was a chanakah party) nobody blew a gasket. We made fun of the guy for the rest of the night. I have friends and family of many religions. I consider my self lucky to be exposed to so many different cultures and tradtions as a teen. My Jewish friends dont care if you say Merry Christmas, they like seeing it. They just yell Merry Christmas right back. My muslim friend celebrates a secular chritmas. so Merry Christmas and a happy new year. and happy chaunakah, kwanza, and all those other ones! :teeth:

There's nothing more heartfelt than to have a total stranger say in a defiant and angry tone, "Merry Christmas! And I don't care what anybody says, hmph."
