Another question....?

Does anyone know a good vining or fill in type plant that I could plant at the top or bottom of a steep bank that is covered with rocks. The idea here is to get the vine or plant to fill in between the rocks. We had the rock put on to keep the bank from washing, but I think plantings would help too.

Diane, it's great to see you here!

Is this a sunny slope? Are you going to be adding more soil to the slope area, lowering the grade? I'm just wondering about the amount of soil the plants will have to grow in. How about something like dwarf mugho pines, or ornamental grasses, or did you specifically want a lower groundcover?

I'm a real newbie to both gardening & the gardening bds, so ignore what I'm posting, but...

If you want low ground cover would *good ole ivy* be an option? We have it growing in a corner of our yard & it grows low, quickly & is quite hardy, though it takes some work keeping it under control.

You might try vinca or some people call it perwinkle, myrtle. It's a good filler vine type plant with a small blue flower. It can get invasive but not as destructive as ivy. Easy to grow. I used both solid and varigated varieties spread like crazy.

Ooops...I didn't realize that ivy was a problem. Many of neighbors have ivy & keep it really pretty & neat. However, I seem to be learning from the F&G bds that ivy can be a problem. Recently my side yard neighbor pointed out some ivy in his yard that he thought to be poison ivy or oak, which seems to have mingled itself among my ivy too. And, when I told DPartner, DP said there'd be no love lost if our ivy disappeared...in fact, we may be aggressive w/it & try to make it disappear.

So, in light of this...I'm sorry for my bad advice & I think I should retract my previous post about the ivy. I suppose you should listen to my original advice...which was to ignore my advice.

However, I still love your house & would love to know more about it.

Nuts, Don't apologize. We all enjoy hearing each others thoughts and opinions. That's what makes this board run.
Personally, I love the look of ivy. It's so classic and I've seen many homes with it that appear not to have a problem. That's why I used it in my last house. I got a little carried away too. I had no idea how bad it can be. Now I just enjoy others ivy covered walls.

My neighbors who have it seem to keep it under control in their gardens or train it up trellis [off the house] in another part of the garden. I suppose I'd pass on the ivy. I'll let you know how it goes when we try to get rid of it.

I'm learning so much from you guys. Now I'm just hoping Isabel disappears without creating damage so we can all get back into our gardens & have fun.

I don't know that ivy would be a good option. It doesn't grow well here in the frozen north. I was thinking of something like Crown Vetch, but I have only seen it right in the city, and I don't know how long it would take to establish. I also have to be careful about anything viney that might get on to the house. Logs would NOT do well with vines on them! We have been cautioned to keep shrubs and trees farther away too.

I was going to transplant hostas this weekend, but now we have had frost. Can I still do it?

Was it a hard frost, Diane? I've read that hostas are best transplanted in early spring (before the leaves unfurl), or early fall. I've always done mine in the spring.

Any hosta transplanting suggestions for Diane, Buds?
