we went from a 1300 sq ft to a 2500 sq ft but our utility bills (7 years later are) only $100 more. but we went from a circa 1960's house to a new house with much better insulation. our current home has much better windows, wall and cieling insulation than our prior home-so our utility bills are probably much lower than they would have been if we had not upgraded (and we have high ceilings in some areas vs low ceilings throughout-and much greater temperature variances than our previous home).
We doubled in size from 1K sq ft to 2K sq ft--but the only utility that is higher is the gas bill, not from consumption, but because we are locked in at 14.90 when the open market price is 6.75.
We also moved to a different area so that may be part of the reason-excluding gas, all other utilities dropped.
We went from an 1800 sq ft townhouse (end unit) to a 2500 sq foot single family, same age, and our utilities went DOWN! We went from gas to all electric and we average 250 per month now for everything as we are on budget billing. This is with a 14 year old heating and a/c unit that is being replaced this spring. Then, our bill should be even less since the new units are SO much more efficient.
