Just returned from 10 nights at the Poly

Cast: Me, DW, DD4, DD7mos, and the in-laws

Took the Magical Express. It took about 1.5 hours to get to the resort. We got there at 10:30am.

We had 2 garden view rooms reserved using the 40% off offer (phooey on free dining!). We had requested connecting rooms, 1st or 3rd floor Samoa or Fiji, poolside.

We were assigned connecting rooms on the very far end of Tahiti on the 2nd floor. Bummer. I asked if there was anything “closer to the action.” After a few minutes, the CM came back and said she could give us 2 rooms, not connecting, but adjoining, on the far end of Aerotora, lagoon side. So we say that sounds good—we’ll gladly trade the connecting rooms for the view and the proximity to the GCH (and more importantly to the drink refills!).

The rooms weren’t ready yet, so we went and had lunch at Captain Cook’s. After lunch, the rooms were ready so we get the room numbers and head over. It turns out that our rooms were at the complete opposite end of the longhouse and on the garden/monorail side, not the lagoon side as we had been told. We didn’t complain though because it was what we paid for, and it was even closer to the GCH.

We were at the very end on the 1st floor right across from the sliding door for the entrance. It appears that entering or exiting the longhouse is cause for yelling, but it never woke us up, it was just annoying.

We were there when they switched the towels. That was nice, the new ones were definitely an improvement. The shower is perfect if you’re 5’4” or under—the shower heads are extremely low.

The room size was nice. DD4 slept on the day bed. It was also cool to have HDTV, though they should tell you how to get there and what the channels are. We had to figure it on our own. I had to reprogram the in-laws TV for theirs to get the HD channels.

The room itself was in pretty rough condition. The walls were scratched up, cracked and peeling all over.

It took 4 days to get an “Aloha” from a CM.

Housekeeping was adequate and not very friendly. A lot of scowling. No turn down service.

We won a newspaper on one of the days (just 1 of the 7 weekdays we were there). It was just sitting outside our door (LOL).

Bus transportation was mostly 10 minute or less waits. One time we did sit there for over 40 minutes and did not see a single bus to anywhere. A lot of the people were pretty upset, but that was an exception. Monorail travel was mostly smooth, but there was some training going on. On one of the trips on the resort monorail the driver would stop every time the express was approaching. It was pretty funny.

We had dinner at both Kona and Ohana. We thought the food at both was excellent, especially the bread pudding at Ohana! Our server at Ohana was absolutely terrible though. She had 4 tables that night and we saw her a grand total of 3 times! I had to run down floor manager to get drink refills. She was extremely rude to us when she did bother to stop by. When she brought us the bill, she asked for our cards so she could take it off our dining plan. You should have seen the look on her face when we told her we weren’t on the dining plan. She knew she was in trouble at that point. Every meal thereafter we made certain we told them from the start that we were NOT on the dining plan.

And one last thing that I couldn't quite put my finger on, and I'm sure this will sound strange, but it sure seemed that there were a lot of people staying there that were paying at lot less than we were, and we were on the 40% off code.

If you made it this far, I’m happy to answer any questions!

Glad your stay was good. Samoa is hard to get even for one person. I requested Tokelau this time. I guess your room was a bit shabby and mousekeeping adequete. We also had a rude waitress at 'Ohana for dinner. Our breakfast server was great though. I wonder how anyone got a lower discount than 40%? I sure hope they don't try to put me in Tahiti with 2 small kids, unless it's and MK view upgrade ;) . the only question I have is how was the pool and captain cooks? Were they crowded?
Thanks,
Nichole

We only did the pool after park close, so there was never more than 10 people in it. And at least one of the nights we were in there well past midnight with no hassle.

Captain Cooks was fairly busy at meal times, but we were never more than 3 people deep in line to pay, and never had trouble finding a seat when we wanted to eat there.

Thanks for you review. Will you consider the Polynesian for a future stay?

Only one paper in 7 weekdays!! I would have been ticked. Did you call or didn't it matter much to you.

Sorry also to hear about the condition of the room. I know the Polynesian stays very busy but you wouldn't think the rooms would get in that condition that fast. I guess that was the first longhouse to be renovated though.

I'm curious how you could tell that others had paid less than your 40% code?

I can't be certain. We LOVE the monorail. I really think, though, that we felt like "Gee, for the same amount of money, we could have stayed at the GF." We loved the room size, the transportation, the GCH, I just feel like we didn't get the same "deluxeness" we would get at the GF. For that matter, with the exceptions of the room size and monorail, I feel like we had more "deluxeness" at the WL and even at POR.

That probably doesn't make any sense at all.

No probably with the touch screen ordering system at Captain Cook's at all, with the exception that there was no button to press for "No Tomato" on my sandwich! Though it does say, I think, you can make special requests verbally, I didn't bother.

We didn't really care. With the exception of a few sports scores, we try to disconnect completely when on vacation. I figured that we were the last room before the exit and since everyone in the whole longhouse went by our door on the way that people decided they might like to read it on the monorail or something. No biggie.

I know this may seem like a wierd question, but i'm 5'5.........you think i'll be Ok with those shower heads?? LOLOLOLOL

I'm 5'7" and my DH is 6" and the showers are fine for us. But I've seen a number of people post like corndog that it was an issue for them. I'm guessing it depends on what you're used to at home. Or in my DH case, he's probably used to lots of variations since he travels a great deal.

Thanks for the answer about the papers. How low can people go to steal a paper outside someone else's door?!!!

I wonder if the people you felt like were paying less than you were those folks who were upgraded to the Poly because of the temporary closure of AKL? Not even sure if that is going on right now but I remember hearing some people getting moved to the Poly and keeping the same rate they paid at AKL.

Thanks for your report! :)
