Pre-trip
Me 42 ish, lives in Illinois
DSo Disney Son, sports fanatic - 10
DD Disney Daughter, lover of computer, music and cell phone 14
DS Disney Sister 46, lives in Ohio (thanks DBIL)
DN Disney Niece, best friend to DD - 16
DD and I started thinking about a girls trip to the World last summer while hanging out in the Atlantic Ocean in Daytona. Me and my kids love Disney but husband has had enough. I think we have gone every year since we have been married plus Ive been a few times prior. We mentioned it to DS and she seemed interested.
After thinking about things, I decided there was no way I could go to Disney without DSo. It was originally planned that he and DH would do a guy thing while we were gone but as it turns out DH and DBIL are taking a motorcycle trip while we are gone so now we have added a male to our trip. (and I am glad he is going with us!)
Christmas came and went and DS and I started thinking airline tickets. We watched the websites daily, mostly Southwest and Airtran. We finally made our purchase in February with Airtran for $177.10 each from Indy to Orlando with direct flights, round trip. Indy is halfway between our homes.
Now it was time to make reservations. My family and I stayed at Pop Century last year and absolutely loved it! I made reservations with *********************.com with Allison. She was helpful and kept me informed throughout the planning process through email. We booked 2 connecting rooms at Pop Century for July 17th 22nd with
3-day park hopper passes. We wanted to relax upon arrival, and enjoy a day of pool, shopping and relaxing on our last day. We looked at the All Star Suites but they were more expensive plus 1 bathroom between 5 people just didnt sound appealing. (We only considered it if it would be cheaper!)
On June 2nd, final payment was made.
Our package included some freebies from the Travel Agency (which was extra from the rooms and tickets): Free Disney Dollars (we received $20; it is based on how much your package is), an Im going to Disney World pack which includes Mickey Mouse ears, Disney World gift, Kids activity booklet, and lots of vacation planning info. Also received was a 40-page Must See Must Do Guide to Walt Disney World, insider newsletters and tips all delivered free via UPS. Allison also made us a reservation for Rainforest Café in DTD for our last night. (This package with *********************.com was actually $14.69 cheaper than going through DisneyWorld.com).
Around 42 days prior to our trip, I ordered up postcards through Giftsofalifetime.com for the kids. Actually one went to DS & DN from Tinkerbell, my DSo got one from Woody and my DD got one from Tinkerbell. For example, DSo got one from Woody which is a Toy Story postcard and says: Howdy! Cant wait for you to be here in July! Your pal, Woody! They loved their postcards and they make nice souvenirs!
I have been reading, researching and checking DIS several times a day. I am making notes and doing lots of planning.
DD thinks I have a problem and need to visit Dr. Phil - haha. I believe you cant just wing it to Disney; you must plan, plan and plan some more. I want this trip to be fabulous for everyone.
Well, it happened. On Friday, June 16th the UPS man brought the package to the door. It was the long awaited travel package. It included: Travel vouchers, Planet Hollywood vouchers, park maps, DME tickets/info, DTD info, luggage tags, activity books for the kids, Disney Dollars, as well as freebies from the travel agent: Mouse ears, Disney playing cards and a pen. Soooooooo exciting. Time to go is almost here! I emailed Allison (TA) and asked about reservations at Planet Hollywood. No sense letting 2 good meal vouchers go to waste! Since we have 2 rooms and 2 vouchers, we can use them both at the same time! Now we just sit and wait!
Well, Planet Hollywood only had a very late opening on the night we wanted to go so I tried to switch to another night. No deal there either. One more try for lunch . . . and its a go! Lunch on the last day we were going to be in DTD anyway!
OK . . . it is now the day before we leave. DSo has one more baseball game tonight, the bags are 98% packed and our seat assignments are in row 19 on Airtran. We are set to go!
Monday, July 17th
Today we head to Disney!
I tried to sleep as late as I could but 4:50 am was all I could muster! (too much excitement). We head out about 6:30 am. I need to stop at Wal-Mart to pick up a sunshade for my car!
We are headed to the airport about 7:20 am. A quick stop in Marshall at McDonalds for breakfast, another quick stop to use the restroom and we are at the Indy International Airport in Economy Parking at 10:37 am (their time). DS arrives about the same time. We shuttle to the airport and find a waiting line for Airtran. Finally, we are headed to security. Well, everyone passes through but me. My carry-on bag wont pass inspection. Finally, after removing the camcorder, we are cleared. We thought we would grab some Subway sandwiches, but no, our flight was boarding so it will be pop and pretzels instead. A perfect flight anyway.
We arrive Orlando International Airport sometime around 2:30 pm, gather our luggage and find Disneys Magical Express. After about a 2 minute wait, we are checking in and are told which bus to get on. We arrived Pop Century about 3:40 pm, gather our luggage, give the driver a tip and we arrive! Check-in was quick: we have 2 connecting rooms in the 80s, 3rd floor rooms 9346 & 9347. We settle in, the girls go to purchase mugs (which was well worth getting) and we are headed to the pool. But, not before eating. We head to Everything Pop not too crowded at all. DSo and I share the Moms Monday Special (chicken). Not really enough for 2 but we made due and DD got the chicken strips basket. We split a piece of Tye Dyed Cheesecake between all of us and it was really good! In fact, we had several pieces throughout our stay. OK, now we are headed to the pool. We used the computer pool since it was close to us. A request for more towels and extra pillows to Housekeeping was made and magically appeared while we were out.
After cleaning up, we head to the MK where we hopped on the resort monorail. We stop at the Contemporary to look around, then the Grand Floridian, then head back to Pop. I had ice cream, DSo had cheesecake, DS had a brownie and I finished up with a Beer. The girls hung out a lot by themselves (teens!) and I think they had cheese fries. Bedtime, but not before setting my Mickey alarm!
Tuesday, July 18th
I am up too early but there is too much excitement so I get up and get dressed. Everyone else follows. We head to the food court for breakfast. DSo and DD had chocolate chip pancakes and I had the French toast. The food is really, really good! The only thing I didnt like all week was the potatoes they serve at breakfast. We head back to the room for our park necessities and then we are ready to go. Our first stop EPCOT. We rode Soarin (excellent), Spaceship Earth, Test Track (excellent), explored Innoventions where we sent a photo postcard home, did Living with the Land, & Journey into Imagination. We also did El Rio del Tiempo and Maelstrom. We had lunch at The American Adventure. We had chicken and burgers here. We also explored Club Cool where DSo and I had DS try Beverly. We think it tastes like a cough medicine. DD got a stitch Build a Mug. It was $8.
Now we are ready to head to MGM. DD, DSo and I head to Tower of Terror. As we are in line, it starts to rain. Time for ponchos. The rain doesnt last long. OK, we are on the ride and are in the front row in the elevator. My DSo is starting to panic and I talk him through it. We both scream and the ride is over. We love it. I had been on it before but that feeling is just weird. We find the others and off we go. We do the Great Movie Ride, Star Tours, Muppet Vision 3D which is the worst of all the 3D shows in the parks, and have supper at Pizza Planet. We had pizza and salad.
We head back to EPCOT. We get our extra hours wrist bands and ride Test Track. We also watch fireworks. There are tons of people here and its been a long day so we get to the bus and head back to the resort. Just about every night we get drinks with our mugs and snacks for this evening included Fruit Loops, Ice Cream, Cheesecake, and Kettle Corn.
Wednesday, July 19th
We got up a bit later today. Had breakfast in the food court. DD had a bagel, I had the adult breakfast platter and DSo had the kids breakfast platter. We head to the MK for a full day today and we arent leaving (haha). We do Magic Carpets, Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain x2, Big Thunder Mountain x2, Haunted Mansion (saw Mr. Toads plot), Its a Small World, Peter Pan, Mickeys PhilharMagic, Barnstormer, TTA several times, Buzz Lightyear and Carousel of Progress. We ate lunch at Pecos Bills and had the chicken wrap. We rode the train to Main Street just in time for the parade and we had an excellent view of it right by the curb. For supper, we ate at Columbia Harbor House because DSo really wanted fish. So, we had fish for supper. The girls had Caseys Corner hot dogs. The frozen lemonades are great (strawberry ones are the best). We had the best view of the night fireworks and Tink flying, by just standing in a crowd in front of the Castle. Wishes is excellent!!!! Please, dont miss it! Now, back to the room!
Thursday, July 20th
Up a bit later! We had breakfast in the food court. We had omelets, waffles and muffins. We are headed to Animal Kingdom today. We arrive about 11:20 AM and get Fast Passes for EE. Return time: 5:10 6:10! We rode Primeval Whirl (loved this) and did Its Tough to be a Bug. We got in line for the Kilimanjaro Safari but the wait said 70 minutes. We left the park and headed back to the resort. We had lunch in the food court. It is really hot in Florida and in July and there are really lots of people. That being said, we headed to the pool for the afternoon. OK, now we are ready to tackle Expedition Everest. We get the bus to AK and trek back to EE. Well, the ride is shut down due to lightning in the area. Rats!!!! About 20 minutes later, the CM states, the trains are going back up the mountain so we get in line to experience EE. It is awesome. We were a bit apprehensive due to not riding it before, not knowing what to expect, but it was awesome. It was over way too fast though! We get off and get right back in line in the single rider line. Just an excellent ride! Now, we head back out of the park and bus to MK. The girls had Caseys Corner hot dogs and we returned to Columbia Harbor House for fish and chicken. It is really good! After that, we ride TTA a few times, and Buzz Lightyear. DSo met up with the girls to ride Space Mountain with them and he loved it. Now the fireworks are getting ready to start and DS and I want to see them again and we really want some ice cream. We head into the ice cream shop on Main Street. We order 2 ice cream sandwiches. Well, the CM grabs 4 chocolate chip cookies that are the size of a dessert plate and we say make it just one. He loads ice cream on it and smashes another cookie on top. And there we are! Well, what a mess it was! It was melting everywhere. Try to cut it with a knife? No way! Ice cream was oozing out the sides and over the plate! Not exactly what we were wanting. Oh, well! We sat by the Noodle Station and had Tink fly right over our heads! After a wonderful display of Wishes, back to the room! I had a hard time exiting the turnstyles knowing my hoppers expired.
Friday, July 21st
We slept in a bit longer! Had breakfast in the food court. Actually just DS and I. We had waffles and I bought some grapes. We headed to DTD and did some shopping. We took in Planet Hollywood with our meal vouchers we received with our package. The food was really good! They take your photos before you enter and then hunt you down to sell you a package! (We did!) We got a bus back to the resort and headed to the pool for the afternoon. First, though, we got our boarding passes at the front desk. The pool was very relaxing. DS did laundry while we were there. After we cleaned up, we headed back to DTD. We had ADR for Rainforest Café. It was good. I felt they tricked us a bit as I ordered DSo kids meal they said with fries? and I said yes. Well I was thinking of course, they come with the meal but it was actually extra as it comes with chips! They did the same with me. Just be careful when you order. It wasnt a big deal; just amounted to $2.48 extra. The atmosphere is neat. Well, then we did some more shopping and I was determined to find the kiosk for tattoos. I wanted a Mickey Mouse one. I found it and for $7 I got a temporary tattoo on my ankle. We then headed back to the resort and hung out in the food court with some ice cream. Well, back to the room to pack.
Saturday, July 22nd
We have to go home today. My bill of charges was on my door this morning. We had breakfast in the food court. DSo had oatmeal (which I finished for him and it was really good) and I had waffles. We finished packing up and headed to the front to catch DME. The bus arrived, we boarded and headed to the airport about 10:45 am. We arrived to a very long line to check-in. We had expensive McDonalds in the food court and went through security. I gave the security person my camcorder, camera and film. She stated that if it was under 1000 it would be OK to be x-rayed. I said I would prefer if she didnt x-ray it and she obliged. We had an uneventful flight home, retrieved our luggage, found our car and paid $39.00. Arrived home in time to go to a Billy Currington concert.
Thoughts and funnies on my Disney trip:
Toast My Bagel a woman was asking for a bagel at the counter and said could you toast that and I dont want you to put cream cheese on it. Come on lady, it is not the Four Seasons! Do it yourself!
Bus drivers the bus drivers coming and going from the airport were comical. I really enjoyed them.
Frozen Coke Machines at Pop werent working all the time. Seemed to be down the same amount of time they were up.
Fast Pass I overheard a lady commenting on the people that get fast passes must pay like $100 extra . . . then a guy standing there tells her its free to everyone. Her jaw dropped. I wasnt real happy with her anyway. She let her little one eat a frozen treat on a stick, then when she was done with it, the mom ate on it. Then when she had had enough, she THREW IT ON THE GROUND! WRAPPER AND ALL! Unbelievable.
Parade Watcher a woman had her little one right at the curb watching the parade. Goofy comes along and pats her on the head and she screams hysterically. The mom looks like dont touch my kid. Hey lady, stand back if you dont want parade attention.
Food the food at Disney is really good!
Slobs Disney is full of slob patrons. People just seem to not care where they put their gum (a kid old enough to know better) spit their gum out on the pavement walking along by the bus drop-off. We secretly hopped one of the parents would have stepped in it.
Strollers, Wheelchairs, and Scooters There were just so many! Some arent very good at steering!
July Heat I have almost always gone in July. I think this was my last July. It was hot, hot, and hot; crowded; and lots of people cutting in lines
(adults like you wouldnt believe). I think I will pick a better time of year next time.
Pop rooms We slept like babies; I really love the pillows! We had one towel animal while we were there. The resort was more than adequate. Loved the charging privileges; made it so easy and I was glad I didnt have to carry cash.
Favorite Souvenir a Tinkerbell keychain. It lights up when you press on it.
Thanks Disney World for a fabulous vacation to my very best place in all the world.
