If I have 300 points that will expire on Aug. 1, 2004 can I deposit those for an exchange 2 years from now or will they only use points from the UY in which the exchange takes place? Am I making sense? ('cause I'm confusing myself!)

The first question is which points you can use. You can use the points which expire in July of this year and deposit with II. You could deposit a 2 BR high season or two 1 BR units (high and low or, if you add 4 more points, high and medium). If you do the 2 BR, you will lose 30 points. If you do an exchange first, my understanding is you would have to match and get a unit that occured more than 2 months from when you accept the exchange and that is before 1 August of this year.

You could always do a request first now and try to rent your points. If you rent them, you cancel he exchange request. If you have no interest in renting them and know you can't use them. Deposit them now, rather than waiting. Deposit a unit in lat July and that will give you two years from then to secure AND USE an exchange. If you do deposit, have a good idea in mind what you will exchange for and start that search ASAP and at least a year before you want to travel.

If you do a request first, you are more likely to get shut out. My best recomendation is to rent them or use them. In this situation you could also consider using them for a non DVC exchange like DCLor the CC. While not the full value of the points, non of you're other options will be either with the possible exception of renting them.

With all of the attention that has been given to the World Passport Collection chart, it's likely that many DVC members don't know that they also still have the option to deposit an actual 7-night reservation for a 1BR or 2BR unit at any DVC resort into Interval International (II). The member then can exchange into an II resort for the same size of accomodations. The member has two years to complete an exchange stay, after the date of the deposited week.

Make sure you do a Regular Deposit, not a Late Deposit. In fact, you may want to book a week as far into the future as your expiring points and 7/11 month booking rules allow, and then deposit that week with II (through Member Services) as quickly as possible. Under normal II rules, trading power decreases as the time between the deposit and check-in date decreases.

With Interval International®, you also have the option of first depositing your Disney Vacation Club Resort accommodation into the exchange system, then deciding later where and when you'd like to travel. Keep in mind that once you deposit your Disney Vacation Club Resort Resort accommodation, you cannot withdraw it. This is a great option if you are past your banking dates and don't want to lose the use of your Vacation Points. You have two deposit choices:

Regular deposit:
  • You may deposit your Disney Vacation Club Resort Resort accommodation (one-bedroom or two-bedroom/seven-night stay) into the Interval International system 60 days or more before the start date of your deposited week.
  • You may then contact Member Services at any time to place a search against your deposited week.
  • Travel on the exchange that you confirm must be completed within two years of the dates of the week that you deposited.
Late deposit:
  • You may deposit your Disney Vacation Club Resort Resort accommodation (one-bedroom or two-bedroom/seven-night stay) into the Interval International system 59 days or less before the start date of your deposited week.
  • You may only contact Member Services 59 days or less from the start of the date that you wish to travel to confirm your exchange.
  • Travel on the exchange that you confirm must be completed within two years of the dates of the week that you deposited.

Werner, the rules normally don't allow you to reserve a week then deposit it. The only time I've heard of this happening is when someone had a full week booked and had to cancel their trip. DVC fascilitated the deposit, which I think was a late (less than 60 days) deposit.

The blue text in my previous post is DVC's wording, not mine. If, as you say, "the rules normally don't allow you to reserve a week then deposit it," then why is DVC publishing, "You may deposit your Disney Vacation Club Resort Resort accommodation (one-bedroom or two-bedroom/seven-night stay) into the Interval International system... ?"

The DVC member would work with Member Services to select an available 7-night week. The member would need to know the actual dates of that week to know when the two years will end.

Thank you both very much! I am slowly beginning to get a handle on this and I really appreciate your detailed explanations.:D I will continue to read and ask questions until I've got it down pat.

Werner, the difference is in reserving first then depositing. DVC wants control over which weeks are deposited. In this case you would specify up front you want to deposit a July week. The problem is that a July week is more than the 270 points and they will likely not be willing to accomodate this request. I've asked them in the past about reserving a week then later depositing it and they said no, you can't do it that way. The wording you mention is vague in this regard and somewhat generic. If it were me, I'd argue what you are arguing too.

Here's some info from the actual document that governs the exchange options. It's the last available, done in June of last year.
Page 9 number 6: "All Vacation Time periods are submitted on a randon basis into the Interval Exchange system."
It's been a while since I asked them this question, it'll be interesting to see if they allow a July deposit which would be 218 points for a 1 BR and 296 for a 2 BR at the stated costs of 160 & 270 points, I doubt it.
