Airlines that disappeared either thru merger or straight out kaput?

Which ones have you flown?

Pan Am (my first flight)
TWA
Eastern
People Express
Continental
Northwest (Orient)
Allegheny/USAir/US Airways
Piedmont
AirTran

International

CP Canadian Pacific
Sabena (Belgium)
BWIA (British West Indies Airlines-Barbados)

Most of those already mentioned, plus

Braniff (the first time it was resurrected)
Air Florida
Air Atlanta
Value Jet

and probably small regional carriers that were doing business as one of the majors, such as Air Whatever, dba as United Express

The last 3 on your list.

I flew on Eastern once and my mom flew on Piedmont once. We aren’t big on flying though.

Angie, since your first flight was Pan Am, did you happen to catch the one season tv series of the same name? The storylines were a bit out there, but the visuals were stunning!

The first airline I remember flying was USAir. They were partners with Peidmont and I remember being given a deck of Piedmont playing cards that I had for a long time. We used to fly up to see my dad as unaccompanied minors, and they really treated us great!

I have flown on all of these in the past. Now I fly Allegiant the most last few years

TWA
Eastern
Continental
Northwest (Orient)
Allegheny/USAir/US Airways
AirTran

For sure miss Midwest. My DH was always afraid to fly one day he just decided he was going to get in a plane and he did it😀 Think Bob Newhart with his fear of flying class. That one was always a classic for us. Anyways we went to NY for his first flight the flight was great. The taxi to the hotel in NY was a totally different thing🤪. My brother was a pilot for midwest so he was able to get us the family tickets. I was nice with the champagne breakfast now yiur lucky to get 12 pretzels and 10 peanuts in little bags🤪

I forgot about Midway. They were based out of Chicago’s Midway airport and tried a mini hub at BWI for a while but only lasted about two years there.

American Airlines, for sure. I can't recall what my last trip was on. I can't recall the airlines I took when my family and I were migrating to-and-fro overseas for the military. So..there?

Pan Am would have been interesting, they've always seemed like the Tomorrowland of airlines. Luxury and sorta-retro-futurism. Not to mention a vision of something so different than the crammed and bland flights of today.

Yes, I enjoyed that Pan Am show, and you’re right, many of the stories were a bit bizarre and likely unrealistic.

We had to dress up for the flight. Early summer 1968. My mother and I wore dresses and hats. Maybe even white gloves too. My father wore a summer suit and tie.

And like @BrianL, I received a deck of playing cards that I kept well into college age.

Midway had a hub In Philadelphia too for a while, but USAir drove them out after a few years. I never flew with them.
