ANOTHER Adventure in Autism (4/15) A Taste of What's to Come...

Chapter 30: A Magical Moment (aka: The Eye of the Storm)

(Wow! 2 chapters in one day! Amazing!)

Feeling both mentally and physically refreshed after taking the kids on Splash Mountain, I held Billy’s hand while Tricia called Ed to find out where we should meet. He and Aunt Rae were, predictably, waiting on one of the benches in FrontierLand, so we set out to connect with them. I asked Tricia if her father sounded as if he were still Grumpy and she shrugged and said those three little words we parents love: "I don't know!"

We soon caught sight of them. As it turned out, they had spent the time just sitting in the shade because the Ferry was not operating for some reason. Ed looked at his watch and said that he wanted to take Billy to HOP so he would stop pestering us about it. He did, however, give me a furtive look, as if to ask if it was okay. I think. :scratchin In any case, I murmured my consent and decided to use the change in plans to my advantage.

“We girls will be in Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe,” I called out as he led Billy toward HOP. Ed rolled his eyes, but what could he do? He knows how much I absolutely love Christmas stores! And what could be better than Christmas shopping in WDW??

Heh heh heh! ::yes:: Nothing like a little therapeutic shopping to make a girl feel vindicated!

IMGP2100.jpg

IMGP2101.jpg

(Actually, as much as I love the Christmas Shoppes here and at DTD, I rarely buy much. They carry mostly tree ornaments and my tree is :crowded: jammed full already.) I do, however, like to get a dated ornament each time we come to WDW and luckily, Aunt Rae was anxious to visit the store as well. She puts up a tabletop tree every year that has nothing on it but lights and those glass ornaments shaped like Mickey Heads. It’s really sweet! She was definitely into getting some more of those.

Tricia wasn’t exactly thrilled, but she was hopeful that like most gift shops, there would be a selection of pins to look at and perhaps a CM to trade with. We wandered into the store and began to browse happily. AR immediately found the type of Mickey ::MickeyMo ornaments she liked and was debating colors while I nosed around looking for a dated ornament that could hold a photograph. A pleasant CM noticed Tricia near the register and said, “Our tree needs decorating, would you like to do it?” Tricia hesitated a moment and turned to me.

There, standing next to one of the registers, was a slender Christmas tree that was, in fact, bare and undecorated! Well, imagine that! I recalled thinking that I had read something about being able to ask the CMs at the Christmas Shoppe if you could decorate a tree, but since it was so late in the day, I figured that the opportunity had been long lost. (Think: “waking up Tink” in Tinkerbell’s Treasures.)

Of course, I said yes, she could! pixiedust:

The CM reached behind the counter and pulled out a basket full of ornaments and handed them to Tricia. “Do you know how to decorate a tree?” she asked, politely. I snorted. Tricia laughed, “Yeah, my mom’s kind of a Christmas nut, so I know how to decorate!”

She began to hang the ornaments on the tree and I ran over to get AR so we could watch her. Then I took some more stupid pictures:

IMGP2102.jpg

IMGP2106.jpg

IMGP2107.jpg

After the tree was completed, the CM placed a note on it proclaiming to all that “Patricia” had decorated it that day. (I guess Trish felt the occasion warranted her full, formal name!) She then made out a “Magical Moments” certificate, gave it to Tricia, and assured her that “her” tree would stay that way until tomorrow. She got a big kick out of that. (And so did Aunt Rae.)

IMGP2108.jpg

IMGP2138.jpg

We gathered up our things and, realizing that we had been in the store for much longer than we had expected, hurried off to find the boys and tell them about our “holiday” magic.

Up Next: More calm before the storm.

OMG that is a great magical moment!! :thumbsup2

I didn't know they did that. I will have to see if maybe that is available when we are there in December, that would be great!! Thanks for the installments today.

Yes, the ups and downs of vacation. It happens to everyone. On our first trip to WDW we were in the MK for about two before the first melt down.
3D Smiles (78).jpg

When we were there in December 2007 we had the exact magical moment as you. The woman gave Brian (he is my BFF's grandson) an ornament also.
Thanks for two updates Kathy!

Wow 2 updates!

As someone that had a less-than magical vacation I appreciate stories that are not sugar coated. Thanks for sharing.

And I had NO idea about the Christmas tree!

Wow - the ups & downs of a WDW vacation - we've definitely had our share of those and I'm sure we will have our share of them again this year. :goodvibes We too find it best to split up for a while - we usually blame it on the kids and say we are splitting them up, but I'm sure creating some distance between DH & myself doesn't hurt either. ;)

Chapter 31: The Pressure Builds…

Day Five, Magic Kingdom (continued):

**********************************

The HOP show is only about 20-25 minutes long, so I had figured that we girls had plenty of time to shop and would be stuck waiting for the boys to finish. Boy, was I wrong! By the time we had browsed the Christmas Shoppe, watched as Tricia decorated the Magical Moments tree, took pictures, stood on line to make our purchases, and (last but not least) waited as Aunt Rae painstakingly filled out the mailing forms so her ornaments could be shipped home, we had been in the store for over half-an-hour! :hourglass

Somehow I had missed a call from Ed, so once outside, I called him back. Instead of bringing Billy inside the Christmas store and risking accidental ornament breakage, Ed had decided to walk on ahead to AdventureLand. I had been planning for us to do a few AL attractions, see Captain Jack’s Pirate Tutorial (for the first time ever) and then meet up with my sister and her family for an early dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern.

Having been married to Ed for twelve years, I understood that this (his going to AL next) was his way of apologizing for our earlier disagreement and of showing me that he was trying to get back with the plan.

We were walking slowly because of AR, but we eventually caught up with Ed and Billy:

IMGP2113.jpg

Hmmm. From the look of things, perhaps a few chuckles on the Jungle Cruise were in order?!

IMGP2117.jpg

IMGP2115.jpg

This audio-animatronic tarantula in the queue fascinated Billy. It would stay still for quite some time and then, just as a guest would peer down into the cage, it would move suddenly!

IMGP2116.jpg

IMGP2126.jpg

Billy stayed close to Daddy!

IMGP2127.jpg

IMGP2122.jpg

IMGP2124.jpg

After our cruise, I checked the Times Guide. We were doing great on time! We opted to visit some more attractions in AL and planned to arrive early for the 3:20 showing of the Tutorial instead of the one at 2:15. I was really trying not to push everyone too hard.

IMGP2133.jpg

We queued up outside the Enchanted Tiki Room just as the little pre-show was ending. Some pictures of the queue:

Two of a Kind (Whoops! Did I say that out loud?)

IMGP2140.jpg

Billy just loves this show…it has everything he enjoys: music, color, action, and humor. Oh he laughs so hard he just about busts when Iago appears and interrupts the show! :lmao: I turned and leaned backwards to see if Aunt Rae, who was sitting farther down the bench, was watching him. Despite all the loud music, “thunder”, and shouting, her chin was nodding on her chest while everyone else’s in the crowd was tilted upwards toward the performing birds. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I was glad we had another early night planned. She seemed to do so much better last year when we would leave the parks after lunch, break for a couple of hours, and then go back for the evening. Unfortunately, this year’s plan of staying at a park until dinner, then calling it a day (for the most part) was working out much better for the rest of us.

After helping her to her feet and feeling her lean very heavily on him as we exited, Ed caught my eye and shook his head slightly. Billy was pulling us toward Aladdin’s Carpets, but Ed had to hang back with AR because she did not want to let go of his arm. Her body was practically bent over in half :worried: and I toyed with the idea of forgoing our dinner ADR so she could get back to the Wilderness Lodge and lie down. Ed beat me to it by suggesting to her that perhaps she would be less tired if we finally just got a wheelchair for her.

This time, however, instead of just tossing off the suggestion with an “I’m alright”, she got a little miffed. “Why do you keep wanting to put me in a chair?” she complained. “I don’t want anyone to have to push me around all day. I don’t want to be a burden!” She broke away from Ed defiantly and started walking quickly as we approached the queue. Her gait was so unsteady; we were worried she would fall at any minute.

Oh, this was going to be a l-o-n-g afternoon.

Now you know, of course, that I’m a nurse. I’ve been a registered nurse for 23 years and I completely understand (and encourage) people to be as independent as possible. But, there comes a time when the need for independence has to be balanced with the need for safety and accident prevention. Aunt Rae was just being stubborn and not looking realistically at her diminished mobility and endurance. Truth be told, it would be ten times easier on the rest of us if she would just save her strength and…to quote the Nicholas Cage character in Guarding Tess, “just get in the blankity-blank chair!” like we had been telling her all week!

She flat-out refused an ECV, you may recall. She would be way too nervous to drive one, anyway. If she ever bumped into anyone, she would just die of embarassment on the spot. I understood and agreed with this, but, it was getting obvious to everyone that she just couldn't walk around the parks anymore.

Aunt Rae’s issues are not just physical in nature; they were psychological as well. (Deeply psychological; as I was discovering on this trip.) But….I digress. (More to come on this later.)

We spun around again on the carpets. The queue is so much shorter than that for Dumbo, and it’s practically the same ride!

IMGP2152.jpg

A quick time check revealed that we should be making our way over to the Pirates of the Caribbean area to get situated for “the Captain Jack Show.” On the way over, we had Billy practice his “Aarrrgh!!” pirate: which he did very enthusiastically to the amusment of several other guests. The OTPer in me was very happy; after this we would have an easy walk over to the LTT and our 4:30 dinner ADR with my sister’s family! :thumbsup2

(Chapter 31, continued)

Fortunately, we had passed by the Pirate Tutorial sometime during our visit to the MK yesterday, so I knew where the CMs would be placing ropes on the ground for a makeshift staging area near POC. We stood around awkwardly for a few moments until about 10 min prior to showtime, when 2 CMs laid out very thick and worn-looking ropes (reminiscent of those on a ship) in 3/4 of a square. AR stood for a few minutes while we waited for the show. (All the kids sat on the ground while the adults stood behind them.) “I’m going to sit over there on that bench,” she announced. “Okay,” Ed and I responded, and Ed walked her over to a bench across the “road.” Tricia, very sweetly, was concerned. “AR won’t be able to see the show from over there!!”

“Well, if she would have been sensible and rented a chair, she’d be able to see just fine, wouldn’t she?” was my response. :cat: (Me-oww!) I was quickly losing patience with the whole situation. Aunt Rae’s a big girl I reminded myself, and I turned my attention to the kids and their enjoyment of the show:

Front row, not too center. Perfect!

IMGP2155.jpg

Here comes Mack, the first mate:

IMGP2156.jpg

He chats it up with the kids until Jack appears!

IMGP2160.jpg

IMGP2170.jpg

The actor is spot-on in his Jack characterization.

IMGP2166.jpg

Mack asks Billy and Tricia to join in. Tricia declines, politely, and Ed asks Mack if he can “shadow” Billy because he is autistic. “No problem!” he said.

IMGP2177.jpg

Learning swordplay. (Jack also taught them how to run away!)

Taking the Pirate’s Oath: (Ed's really getting into this!)
:rotfl:

IMGP2182.jpg

A very enjoyable show! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

The kids all got certificates and we debated going on POC. Only problem was, so did everyone else! Oh well, the queue moved steadily at least. I remember it wasn't as bad as we had feared. We rode again and, once more, I couldn’t get any good pix from a moving boat in the dark. Afterwards in the gift shop, we had to deal with the naughty behavior of someone in our party….

IMGP2206.jpg

AdventureLand was starting to get quite congested, so we hung a left out of POC and circled around El Pirata Y el Perico/Pecos Bill’s Café on route back to Liberty Square.

IMGP2208.jpg

Tricia insisted on wrestling the camera from me in FrontierLand so she could take a picture of the rest of us (I’m not sure how that strange guy got in there….oh, and Stitch, too!)

IMGP2210.jpg

Okay, you guys, I know we're about to go have Turkey for dinner, but that's no reason to keep stalking us......

IMGP2211.jpg

Up Next: We give thanks for our bird, but not for the bill!

Kathy

Kathy, I hope AR changed her mind and let you get a wheelchair for her. She was just not thinking clearly. I love the pictures of Billy holding Ed's hand.

I think Ed was having as much fun as Billy with the Pirates, did he get a certificate too :lmao:?

Kathy, I love those pictures of Billy and Ed doing the tutorial! Oh, and hubba hubba on the Jack Sparrow - that guy is so dead-on for Johnny Depp! ::yes::

Can't wait to hear about Liberty Tree...:goodvibes

Sara

I think a meltdown with a toddler is easier to deal with then what you were dealing with. :grouphug:

Sorry about the bad day. Is Tricia a teenager yet? I was thinking of you girls and Emma yesterday-we were in NYC for my birthday and had to stop in AG place (I got a free Christa poster!).
:( nabout Aunt Rae. When we finally got my grandmother to accept needing a walker/"transportation chair", she was sometimes ok with it (frankly, I think not falling on her face was positive reinforcement), but there was the fateful day we went to BJ's, I handed the shopping cart to the worker, and Grammy tried to give the lady her walker. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

A Not Completely Off-Topic Micro-Mini American Girl Place TR!!!

Yes, not completely....we DID have an AG doll with us on this trip as a member of the family!! ;)

..... Is Tricia a teenager yet? I was thinking of you girls and Emma yesterday-we were in NYC for my birthday and had to stop in AG place (I got a free Christa poster!):

Tricia is turning 13 this year! :faint: Where has the time gone, I ask you??

Anyway, she still enjoys the company of her AG friends Jess, Cathy, and Julie! For those of you who were with me at the start of this report (when it was in its PTR phase), you may recall that Tricia had opted to take her doll, Jess, with her to WDW because Cathy had been chosen to help celebrate Tricia's 11th BDay at American Girl Place in NYC.

AG Place is an amazing three-story store/theater/cafe that is totally devoted to girls and their AG dolls.

Micro-Mini TR:

Cast: Tricia, her cousin, Caity (also 11 at the time), my sister, Eileen, and our mother, Catherine (Grammy).

It had been forcasted to rain heavily that day, so I splurged and rented a Limo to take us into the city (NYC) for the occasion. (I really did not feel like driving, anyway.) Plus, the two girls were so excited!!

Tricia and Caity "entering" through the revolving doors at the ground level. (They both insisted that I re-shoot the original picture of them coming in b/c they were in heavy coats and were wet!!)

Shopping with her doll, Cathy.

Here's Grammy with her doll (you read that correctly) her doll, Molly:

IMGP0952.jpg

After shopping, we had Tea at the AG Place Cafe. Everything served was related to a historical AG doll..."Felicitiy's" scones, "Samantha's" tea sandwiches, etc.

The tables were set up with mini place settings for each doll and sassy seats so the dolls could sit at the table!

After Tea, the girls and their dolls attended a seminar on doll hair care and were shown how to do "fancy" hairdos on their dolls. Each doll received a giftbag with a doll brush and little hair do-dads. Then they had a photo shoot with their dolls... the four of them on the "cover" of American Girl Magazine!!

Thanks, Hedy, for bringing back that wonderful memory! :cloud9:

You haven't been seeing too much of Jess lately in the report. That's b/c Tricia soon discovered that it wasn't so easy touring the parks with an 18 in. doll to take care of. (She found out it was kind of like the difference between touring alone and touring with kids, huh?)

Anyway, Jess spent a lot of time at the VWL, but you will be seeing her again at our upcoming Ohana dinner!!!

Okay, back to the regular report.....

Kathy

Hedy: See Above!!

aspen37: I definitely recommend the WDW Marathon Weekend if you can finish training by then. Ed & I had a blast!

Mousescrapper: I wasn't at all :faint: after 2 SM rides! (It just makes my eyes water.) Itchy-Stitchy!

preschoolmom: Yes! CELEBRATE those princess: years while you still can!!

DisneyFanShawn: Hello!:wave2: Or should I say, "Howdy, y'all"???

mom2mek: Oh there were lots of moms ooogling Jack, let me tell you! :thumbsup2 The silhouettes are darling souveniers...

Halloweenqueen: Your shirt design is coming up soon!! Thanks again!

AGPrincess: "Magical Meltdowns"... :rotfl:

Kimmylaj: Wow! Kudos for getting through this in one day! I love your comment about "it wouldn't be Disney without one!" (Meltdown)

MRYPPNS: Oh, BABY!! (It won't be too much longer, now, but it sure feels like its taking forever, doesn't it? :flower3:

mrsksomeday: No, Ed didn't get his own certificate! :rotfl2: But he seemed to enjoy himself! I am really, really mad that I may miss you guys in the Fall.....(Do I actually need reservations and a ticker to start a PTR? :scratchin Isn't that really just a technicality??

Thanks to all for reading and posting!

Kathy

Hi Kathy! You are really moving this TR along! Two updates, plus an AG update in 2 days!! I love the pictures of Ed "shadowing" Billy at the pirate tutorial - that's not something I would have thought of to do with the boys, but now we might check it out.

I hope AR changes her mind and gets a wheelchair - I know you would all feel better if she did!

Can't wait for more!

Kathy

Ed really looked like he was having fun when he had that sword in his hand. I replied on our NEW TR (shameless plug) about the scheduling situation. How many times do Bill I and change dates before we are rock solid on it? Just schedule your vacation and we might just be there :lmao:.

You look like you were having so much fun there! (Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Sassy seats-I would have gotten so much mileage out of that with Felicity). I'm also a fan of the doll holders in the bathroom.

I SO hear you about someone needing but refusing a WC/ECV. When we were there my BFF was about ready to drop, but would she agree to one? NOOOOOOO! She just stumbled along, all grouchy. I decided the same as you--"shes's a big girl". And she (and we) survived.

Loving your TR. Keep it coming!

i think its great grammy has a doll, i do too. i didnt get her till i was a grown up either. theyre just so pretty
