ANOTHER Adventure in Autism (4/15) A Taste of What's to Come...

Kathy - I have lurked on a couple of your reports, but wanted to finally post on your report as I am sooo happy you came back to finish it! :goodvibes

And geez...for this trip being over a year ago, and not being able to find your notes, I think you are doing a fabulous job remembering the details!

Great update! Welcome back! :flower3:

Sara

I agree w/ the last poster...you do have a great memory. I have trouble just recalling all the detials of our trip and it was only 7 months ago.

Thanks for the pictures and glad you guys had fun on HM, BTMRR, & AFC hope the rest did you all good and the parade will be FUN as well hope your nieces enjoyed HM!:goodvibes

All caught up! It took me all day (on & off) to go back and read the PTR portion and the TR portion, but I did it! And I'm glad I did - it's like you never took a break. Thanks for deciding to finish this report. Do you have your notes from last April? :rolleyes1

Chapter 25: Parade Watching and Pool Splashing

DSis and I had agreed ahead of time that a good place to view the 3 o’clock Share a Dream Come True parade would be somewhere in Liberty Square. Our group was coming from FrontierLand and Marilyn’s was coming from BBB at The Castle, so it seemed like a good halfway mark.

Not sure who arrived first, but we all met up somehow and the cousins were thrilled to finally be doing something, anything, together at WDW!!

I have a vague memory of some minor annoyance with a CM who, after we (and a bunch of others) had been staked out along the rope for about 20 minutes, proceeded to tell us that we needed to move because they “might” need to drop the rope to let people cross the parade route. (There was no one who needed to cross at that time!) She directed us to move over but, hey! We weren’t about to go and “claim jump” a bunch of other folks who had staked out their spots in advance.

In the end, we all just made it clear that we would be happy to let people pass through if needed, but we were not going to give up our spots!! After she left, we went right back to where we had been standing before others could swoop in! I felt a bit guilty “disobeying” a CM, but seriously, it was a bit ridiculous. I’ve been to enough Disney parades to know that “Crossing Points” are usually pretty well marked out ahead of time. Anyway, the parade was already coming down the street and it was too late now to try and find another spot with five kids in tow.

As you can see, we had a nice view!

The princesses seemed to pay special attention to my nieces who were wearing their princess dresses and their BBB sashes .

IMGP1943.jpg

When the parade was over, we stood and chatted for a while as the crowd dispersed. We considered trying to tour a bit more with the others, but our group had been going since eight that morning (Crystal Palace character meal), and so we opted to stick with our original plan and head back to the Wilderness Lodge Villas for some R&R. Aunt Rae, especially, was getting really fatigued.

It was so tempting to stay… its always hard to leave the MK! Harder still when all the kids are pleading to be able to stay together awhile longer! But, we reminded them that we would be getting together for a character dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern the next night and promised that they could do some attractions together after that.

Tricia, especially, was disappointed and made no secret about it as we made our way through the Hub on our way out. “Every minute we stay here is one less minute you get to swim in the pool before dinner,” I reminded her. Swim time was a reasonable consolation. After all, hadn’t she been complaining before we arrived that we "never" got to swim when we were at WDW?? “You can’t have it both ways,” I said. Ed was extremely supportive about leaving. (No big surprise there!) He, too, always complains that we don’t get to swim enough at the gorgeous resort pools.

(Me, personally, I’m not a “pool person”, so I’m much happier in the parks.)

Our exit was blocked, however, by the parade as it traveled from FrontierLand toward Main Street. And so, we got to see a bit more parade from a different angle. (I think we were near the flagpole area.)

We left the MK (sigh!) and joined a rather large group waiting for the ferry back to the Wilderness Lodge. I had thought that a pleasant ferry ride would be more scenic and relaxing than the bus, and I was right.

IMGP1965.jpg

We took a slow, rambling walk from the dock to the Villas, admiring the views and the wildlife along the way.

Once they saw the theme pool, the kids forgot all about wanting "more rides" and couldn't wait to change into their suits!

Villas Pool, ready for "our future enjoyment"...

IMGP1993.jpg

The Villas “quiet pool” was being refurbished, so we went to the main theme pool (which was fine with the kids!) Billy was not willing to try the water slide, but Tricia enjoyed a few slides before rejoining the rest of us as we enjoyed the amazing pool.

IMGP1974.jpg

IMGP1981.jpg

IMGP1984.jpg

Billy especially enjoyed standing in front of the little “waterfall” and feeling the pressure of the water splash over him.

Ed struck up a conversation with one of the lifeguards, who had worked with special needs children in the past. All the CMs are so friendly!

And Aunt Rae took some much-needed rest.

IMGP1976.jpg

IMGP1988.jpg

It looks a bit overcast in these pictures, but it was still nice and warm out.

An hour or so just flew by. We were having fun, but it was getting close to dinner-time and I wanted to get started with showers. We had no ADR planned, just going to grab something at Roaring Fork, but we had a DIS-Meet planned right after that with mrsksomeday and YodaK, and I didn’t want to be late!!

I went on ahead with Aunt Rae, hoping to get my shower in before the others! Ah!! A few brief moments of peace, solitude, and extra deep-conditioning shampoo! Then, wet and noisy, they all came trooping in, so I helped Billy get showered and dressed. Once again, having that second bathroom on the studio side of the 2-BR villa was really a treat.

We herded everyone together and walked back over to the Lodge and the Roaring Fork Snack Shop for self-service. I have no memory of what we had… I’m sure it was the usual sandwiches-or-chicken strips-or burgers combinations. I couldn’t really concentrate on my food; I was so excited that I was finally going to meet my on-line friends! The couple had a dinner ADR at the Whispering Canyon Cafe, so they were traveling to our resort. We hoped to be able to spend some time together before they went off for their dinner. It couldn’t have been more convenient.

Mrsksomeday (aka Tracy) and I made cell phone contact….they were here!! :cheer2:

Kathy

Very nice update Kathy! :goodvibes Your nieces look adorable all decked out in their BBB outfits!

I love the boat rides! So relaxing and beautiful! That pool looks fantastic, but I'm not a pool person either! Love to look at them, but don't love squeezing into a swimsuit! Aunt Rae's idea looks like a good one though! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to hear about your meet with Tracy and Bill. :grouphug:

Sara

Kathy - Glad you are back and all is well. I cannot imagine the craziness of the house and stuff.

Your nieces looked so pretty from their BBB experience. Your parade pictures were great!! The WL pool is beautiful. I loved the AR relaxing picture :rotfl:.

I can't wait to see what you thought of Bill and me :rotfl2:.

Kathy, thanks for sharing and taking the time to post those pics! I love your family's matching baseball shirts and your nieces are adorable! princess:

Chapter 26: My first DIS-Meet

I rushed outside and practically ran over them in my excitement! Tracy and I had “talked” back and forth for some time as we were planning our trips; it was an odd feeling… meeting someone you already felt you knew and loved!

Ed, AR, and the kids were still eating inside, so we went back in and gathered around our table in the back. I was so glad that Tracy had shared in her report that Bill’s strong hand was his left one (and even gladder that my hubby had actually been listening to me when I mentioned it to him!) Ed would have naturally stuck out his right hand to shake Bill’s and it probably would have felt awkward for both of them. *Sorry, for any readers who are a little confused: Bill has cerebral palsy.

The only real concern I had about my kids meeting Bill was with Billy. Tricia was old enough and, for want of a better word, savvy enough, not to be put off by someone in a wheelchair but Billy! I knew how he loved toys that had buttons and switches…I envisioned him coming up to Bill and pressing all the buttons on his electric chair at once, sending him shooting across the room backwards or something!

No, I’m serious!! Either that, or he might spill water on the controls and short-circuit it! :rolleyes1

I kept a watchful eye on my son…I could see he was looking at Bill’s chair like it was a really cool toy (or perhaps just another ride at Disney!) Thankfully, he did not get the chance to do any damage!

Bill "squared"!:

IMGP1998.jpg

My gang was still eating, but the dining room was not crowded at all, so we just stayed where we were. We exchanged little gifts, talked about our respective trips thus far, and took a few pictures.

It seemed that all too soon, Bill and Tracy had to take off so they could check in for their ADR. We walked them up the steeply sloped ramp (thank goodness there were handrails on either side, because Aunt Rae was so tired she practically had to pull herself up the hall!)

You know, Bill’s chair really was a cool toy! That thing has some gitty-up! I admired how easily he maneuvered himself up the ramp and around the corners. Tracy and I talked and talked like we had known each other for years… I was sorry that we had to part. We arrived at the WCC, made tentative plans to meet after their dinner if possible, then waved good-bye.

Back again we went under the covered walkway to the Villas side, and once more the kids rang the bells in front of the arcade. (No wonder its called Buttons and Bells!) I can’t imagine how many hundreds of times those two bells get rung each day!

We ambled down the hallway to our ground-floor villa and Aunt Rae was dismayed to find that her key card to the studio, which she was sharing with Tricia, would not open the door. :headache: She was very frustrated with this, more so than I would have expected.

“Just come in our door,” Ed told her, “and go through the living room.” Its not like we kept the connecting door closed or anything. It just didn’t seem like a big deal, but she was visibly upset.

Oh well. We all commenced with our pre-planned after dinner chill-out. I puttered around…watched some TV with Ed…did some laundry (soooo nice having the stackable washer/dryer right there in the villa!) AR announced that she was going in for a shower. The kids got into their jammies and Tricia read while Billy watched a DVD. It was really nice to be “home” early.

My cell rang; Tracy and Bill were done eating and wanted to know if we were up for extending our DIS-meet. I asked Aunt Rae if she would mind if Ed and I went downstairs to hang out with them for a while instead of asking them over to the villa. Since she was already in her pajamas and robe, I figured she would rather we went downstairs. After tucking the kids in bed, Ed and I went downstairs to meet the other couple.

At first, we thought we would go out by the pool and get a drink at the Trout Pass Pool Bar, but upon arriving at the bar, we realized that it had closed. (Kind of early, wasn’t it? It was only about 9:30!) Oh well, we decided to scope out the Iron Spike Room at the Villas. The Iron Spike Room is a cozy public area just off the main Villas entrance. Its done up in an old-time railroad motif and is filled with cozy seating, game tables, and a fireplace.

I’m kicking myself for not taking any pictures, because it is really quaint and beautiful. But I had been acting as group photographer all day long and I guess I just wanted to hang out and enjoy the company of Tracy and Bill. We enjoyed the luxury of having the room all to ourselves and I noted that it was much easier to understand Bill’s speech without all the noise that had surrounded us in Roaring Fork and in the vast Wilderness Lodge lobby.

The four of us spent over an hour just talking, talking, talking. It was a nice break to be able to have some “adults-only” time. But, all good things must come to an end. It was nearing 11:00 and I was stifling my yawns very unsuccessfully. Reluctantly, we walked them to the bus stop and waited for a bus for Downtown Disney to arrive. It was still rather mild outside, even at the late hour. November is nice in Florida!

Finally a DD bus arrived and we were waving good-bye! :wave2: Ed and I walked back inside and I felt so happy that we had been able to enjoy such a pleasant evening.

Back at the villa, however, I was surprised to find the light on in Aunt Rae and Tricia’s room. The kids were asleep (Tricia on the pull-out bed in the studio and Billy on the pull-out in the living room), but Aunt Rae was sitting straight up in her bed when I peeked in.

“Aunt Rae, what are you doing up? I thought you would be sound asleep by now,” I said. “Well, how could I sleep when I had to watch the children?!” she replied. Uh-oh. :guilty:

I explained to her that I hadn’t expected her to stay up and wait for us to return, but I guess she took her “babysitting” responsibilities very seriously and would not allow herself to turn out the light and go to bed. I felt bad and apologized. I hadn’t really thought of her staying with the kids as babysitting them – Tricia was almost twelve at the time and would call us on her cell phone if we needed to come back to the room for any reason, and we were just down the hall.

Nevertheless, I realized in retrospect that Aunt Rae may have felt put upon and I didn’t want her to think that we were taking her for granted. Ed and I turned in for the night and I told him that I had made up my mind that when we had our “Mom & Dad Only” dinner at Artist Point later that week, we would have the kids go to the supervised kid’s program at the Lodge, the Cub's Den, instead of asking Aunt Rae to watch them. She was getting much, much more stressed out this trip than she had last year. I didn’t want to push it. Ed agreed and we settled in to get some shut-eye.

Tomorrow would be another early day at the Magic Kingdom!! pixiedust:

Kathy,

So glad to see you're back. I'm glad I had subscribed to this thread way-back-when, because it was such a nice surprise to see you have picked it back up again.

I enjoy your narrative, keep it coming! (I especially love the Aunt Rae parts, it kind of reminds me of my mom!)

Also, can't wait to hear about your visit to Artist Point. I call tomorrow for our 90-day ADR's, and Artist Point is on my list for a 'mommy & daddy' only dinner.

So glad you had a nice DISmeet!

Wow! You are really rolling along with the updates now!!

I'm so glad you got to spend some time with Tracy and Bill - they seem like great people. I hope I can meet them someonday - shouldn't be too hard since they are there every other month. :rotfl:

Sorry AR stayed up to "babysit" - can't wait to hear about the kids club! I would be so nervous to leave Alex - maybe you can ease my concerns... :confused3

wow 2 updates and pictures!

glad you kept your nice viewing spots and your neices looked so pretty, what a special treat to share w/ them.

Glad you stuck w/ your guns as hard as it was to leave and take that break at your resort.

I agree the CM's are generally so nice! especially when helping w/ a child :)

How nice to have your DisMeet! I "know" what you mean about meeting a friend you have never actually met. I truely hope to meet some of you someday!

great upadtes and can't wait for more. Hope the kids club works out for you guys. I was nervous about leaving Michael at the Neverland Club, but it all worked out really well.

Great update!

My one beef about the WL/VWL is the fact they only have 2 pools, one of which is the DVC pool. They get crowded fairly quickly.

I'm so glad you got to meet Tracy and Bill...:grouphug:

And being able to sit for 30 minutes while at the MK and enjoy the view..priceless.

Chapter 27: "Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!"

DAY FIVE: WEDNESDAY, 11/7/07

Today I had planned another early morning at the Magic Kingdom. Yesterday we had begun the morning with a pre-park-opening character meal at the Crystal Palace. Today, my first goal was to finally, finally get to the MK for the Welcoming Ceremony and Rope Drop. (Even when we make good time, we always seem to miss it by 5-10 minutes!) Can you believethat despite having been to WDW four times previously, we had never seen the characters arriving at the train station to sing the Welcome Song? This time, I was determined to make it!

It was a good thing that we had put the kids to bed early (well, “early” for WDW, anyway) the night before, because I recall we had none of the usual mid-week I-don’t-want-to-get-up-early-again rebellion! It’s so easy to get caught up in the vacation excitement and forget the importance of adequate rest, especially when your kids are past the napping age. If you’re not careful, and try to burn the candle at both ends, they tend to “crash” by midweek. (Mommy should have taken her own advice, as you will later see….)

Cue the forboding music: Dum Dum Dummmm!

Again, my apologies for lack of details…without notes, I cannot recall anything of note occurring that morning getting out the door except for the fact that….we made it!!! :thumbsup2

We have this song on one of our WDW CDs, so Billy knew all the words!

A lucky family gets picked to "open the park"

IMGP2008.jpg

Not needing to stop for maps or Times Guides or strollers or lockers, we blissfully strolled in with the early crowd, sidestepping those who needed to pause for the aforementioned necessities, and breezed along down Main Street, USA. Ahh, the smell of those cookies “baking” as you approach the Hub and gaze upon the Castle gleaming in the sunlight….there’s nothing like it!

IMGP2011.jpg

Not that taking an easy stroll down Main Street isn’t enjoyable…it certainly is. We should all remember that those “take time to smell the roses” moments are some of the most magical. But our “stroll” seemed to be getting noticeably slower and slower as an increasingly hunched-over Aunt Rae picked her way gingerly down the street, holding onto Ed’s arm with both of her own. Groups, both large and small, of happy people were passing us in droves. Finally, just before we turned to cross over into TommorrowLand, Ed stopped.

“Aunt Rae, I really think it would be better if we got you a wheelchair for today,” he told her. “You’re having a hard time walking already.”

“Oh, its just my arthritis! I took an Advil this morning. I’ll be okay,” she puffed, and she resumed walking, albeit a bit painfully. I chimed in and seconded the suggestion but, naturally, she would have none of it. :rolleyes2 We were really in an awkward position now: we couldn’t move quickly if she insisted upon walking, but we had to respect her decision to do so. And either way, she was beginning to fret about “being a burden.”

The kids were chomping at the bit to get to Space Mountain, so Ed told me to take them on ahead and that he would take his time with AR and perhaps they would take a gentle ride on the TTA. (Ed doesn’t do SM anyway.) Reluctantly, but gratefully, I did as I was told and the kids and I moved quickly over to SM.

IMGP2012.jpg

IMGP2013.jpg

Wow! To my surprise, there was very little wait! (The above line moved quickly.) We breezed through the better part of that l-o-n-g queue and immersed ourselves in the semi-darkness and the futuristic soundtrack. When we got to the boarding platform, there was a modest wait, but we spent the time, as usual, looking up and trying to be the first one to see the meteor “cookies” as they flashed across the simulated nighttime sky.

We lined up on our numbers and discovered that we would be in the first of the double-car space ships. Tricia decided to be brave and took the first seat. I liked to keep Billy in the middle so I could sit behind and put my hand on his shoulder, but I needn’t have worried. He laughed and shrieked in ecstasy the entire ride! Oh the speed! He loves it!

“Again! Again!” was his expected response as soon as we pulled into the disembarking area. (It is a given that on all the “big” and “fast” rides, Billy wants to ride twice in a row. That’s why I was anxious to get to SM first thing.) We went back outside and around again to the entrance for our obligatory encore ride. This time, the queue was building and the FP entrance had been opened, so we “GAC’d” it. This time we got to ride on the other track, which was cool, because they are slightly different.

Billy wanted to go a third time, but was vetoed by both Tricia and me. “Billy, don’t you want to go to see Buzz Lightyear?” Tricia teased. “Buzz Lightyear – YES!!” was his reaction. Billy loves him some Buzz!! He left SM in the dust…

We trucked on over to the TTA…boy, it was getting warm outside! We found AR, not sure where Ed was at the time… restroom, perhaps??

IMGP2017.jpg

After he joined us, we made a beeline for the Space Ranger Spin! I decided that, since my family loves this so much, that I was just going to take pictures of everybody having a good time and not bother trying to play. It actually was so much fun just watching the rest of them play…Billy was with Ed (who was very intent on a big score) and Tricia was with AR (who gets hardly any score, but seems to enjoy the experience, anyway!) We were an “odd” number, so I got a car all to myself. Perfect…no partner to spin me this way and that. I think I got some good pix!

Kathy

Gosh, you had gorgeous weather! We were there last November and had several cold and rainy days.

Boy, do I miss sunshine!

I wonder if they are going to change the seat configuration on SM. I hope not. The kids really like sitting single-file.

All I keep thinking about is how your April trip must have been different without AR.

Great update!! I'm so glad you made it for rope drop!! I don't like to get to a park too much before rope drop so we don't have to wait around, but I always like to see the opening show. Wouldn't it be fun to be the opening family??

Let me take a moment to say "hello" to all you DIS Trippie readers and writers who have been kind enough to post such nice comments:

Hi Kathy! I am so happy to see you back!:cool1: I am glad everything is fine with the family. Was Ed bummed because he did not get to do the 1/2 marathon this year? I am thinking of training for next years 1/2 marathon.
We stayed at WL in September and loved it. We took the boat all but one time to MK in 10 days. I can't wait for your next installment. You write the best TR's.:thumbsup2
