ANOTHER Adventure in Autism (4/15) A Taste of What's to Come...

I'm loving this report (just like I loved the last two :goodvibes )!

We, too, live in a tiny (tiny!), split level, post ww2 home - in an affluent area - so we can be close my DH's work and for the excellent school district (which we also didn't know about my son's PDD-NOS when we moved!).

Wow.

And ALL THAT CAMPING! :rotfl: I'm not a camper either - I can't wait to see how this adventure turns out! Oh My!

Thanks for sharing your reports/thoughts/updates... I love reading them!

:surfweb: :thumbsup2 :)

We just went in the heat of late summer. Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach took all the bite out of the heat. They were our very favorite things this time & we are willing to deal with the heat from now on just to get to go to them! Don't sweat it. You'll love WDW in August.

Yipee!

:cool1: :cool1:

Kathy that is so cool and guess what. It looks like a bunch of fockers will be there at the same time. We are all looking to be there the last 2 weeks of August and trying to get a HUGE meet going. When you have excat dates make sure to post them on the TFW thread:yay: :yay:

I think I asked this before, but are you in South Jersey? Just asking becasue there is an Walk now for Autism Event 5K Walk, Resource Fair, and family fun day at Citizen's Bank Park this weekend and I was wondering if you were participating?

Kathy...

So happy for you! Fort Wilderness sounds like so much fun. I thought about staying in one of the cabins on this past trip - There is so much to do there you could have a full vacation without ever stepping foot in the parks.... not that that would be an option...:dance3:

Congratulations!! :cheer2: Remodeled house and you still get the trip to WDW!!! What a great summer you'll have! I know what you mean about living in cramped quarters - we were in a 700 sq. ft. 2BR/1Bath house until Zach was born - we figured he could just share a room with Alex. Then the diagnosis of PDD-NOS and Zachary was sleeping in a pack-and-play in the livingroom! $60,000 later - we have a 3BR/1 1/2 Bath house with a new family room and much more space (still not enough - but good school district and bad housing market so we aren't going anywhere).

Yay - another report to read!! :cool1:

I've been lurking on your TR for a bit now and figured I would say hi :wave2: to a fellow NJ Disser. I am in Hawthorne, in Passaic County. I am really enjoying your TR. Looking forward to the next one!!!

Kathy,

I'm shouting out a big YAHOOTY just for you!!

10 days in Fort Wilderness sounds like a whole lot a fun :cheer2:

I'm in agreement with Marion and would love to hear about the renovations.

This is so exciting! I love how your family adapts -- I wouldn't have been able to imagine living in an RV for two months with just me and DH (and the two furry kids), but suddenly, you make it seem completely doable. How fun for your kids too -- I bet they will remember this summer forever!

So now...I am losing track...help me out here Kathy. You're still going in November. Then you're going in January. Now you say you're going AGAIN in August? 3 trips within a year? Is this correct? I don't think I even have to use FDM for that one.:)

jordanyosh: You are absolutely correct; three trips planned in one 12-month period! November/January/August! I am in total shock.

Suzerella: Well, I sure hope it will be do-able!

blue_river: Ed's right... there really won't be any difference between parking the RV at FW or some other campground. Just lots and lots more pixiedust:

ProudMomTo3Boys: Hi! I'm in Essex County!

DisMomAmy: Family togetherness is wonderful, but you can only take it so far! :rotfl:

myrsfmly: I don't think I could keep away from the parks knowing how close they were! And it will be perfect timing for the water parks! :sunny:

Hedy: :thanks:

Marion: You hit the nail right on the head! I usually like when everything is calm and status quo, but I'm really trying to look at the situation like an adventure! Wish me luck!

jcc0621 Nope, North Jersey girl here! I usually stick to the TR Boards... where do I find the TFW thread?? A meet sounds like so much fun!

estherhead: As long as the RV has A/C, I'll be fine! If we were talking about a tent-fugghedaboudit!! I can't wait until you get to your Typhoon Lagoon day on your report! :goodvibes

preschoolmom: Ugh! Your school district can make such a difference in special ed opportunities! Like I said, Heaven smiled upon us!

Thanks to all for posting (and Boo-ing!)

Kathy

Wow Kathy how did I miss this update?

The plan sounds great, I think you will find that life in an RV is not really ruffing it. We use to camp in a Tent and then we rented an RV...anyone want to buy a Tent?

One word of caution be careful trying to make lunch while Ed is driving down the road. :sad2: Especially if the dish involves Chicken Feet and Cheese

If you haven't seen it already you should rent RV with Robin Williams..well maybe after your trip would be better :rotfl:

I can answer the chewy tube question, thanks to Kathy.

Chewy tubes are a soft plastic item that kids, especially autistic or sensory seeking children, can safely chew to get the sensory input they need. It helps them stay in a calm (or helps them get back to) dispostition. When I found out about them from reading Kathy's thread here, I got some for our Son, Alex. He asks for them when he needs them now. Hope that helps aswer your question. And sorry for hijacking Kathy.

Thanks for the info. Trey (Moan Boy) also seeks things to chew on. For a while he chewed the front of his shirt all the time. Then it was small rubber balls. Lately he's been chewing on a doggy chew toy that he found. Now I know that we can get him some tubes and he can chew on those. I think the chew toy works though. It's a big bone that squeaks. ;)

:offtopic: Don't mean to hijack your PTR Kathy, but wanted to just note something: in regards to the chewy tubes...you can buy a big length of the same hollow tube at the pet store...what am I crazy? no fish tank tubing---exact smae thing. Just cut off a new length as needed. Works well for us and my DS

now back to Kathy's PTR

Sorry, I've been off the boards for several days. Busy, busy, busy! Got a lot of catching up to do on everybody's reports (and mine too!) Tomorrow I'm off, the kids are in school, and hubby's at work! :woohoo: Ahh. Me time!

Glad you're OK little worried not seeing you around:thumbsup2

mousescrapper: It will just whet your appetite even more, right! :goodvibes now that's not fair....JK

Pre-Trip #29:

“How many nights should we stay?” I asked.

“How’s about ten?” he replied.

Me = :faint: :love2:

JUST LOVE IT!!! can I come too What a great DH you have!!!!

I couldn’t get to sleep last night because I was so excited… and a bit scared. This was a huge undertaking that we were planning and I tossed and turned as my mind continued to race, even though I tried like crazy to put on the brakes. Why, oh why, can’t WDW Central Reservations be open 24 hours? That was the one camping reservation I just had to make!

You can do it! Super Kathy RN disney planner extraordinaire (had to look that up in the dictionary)
Kathy[/B]

Oh my goodness! How lucky are you!!!! That is awesome!!!!:goodvibes

That is every Disney fan's dream come true to be able to go 3 times in a 12 month period! I will be living through your trip reports for sure!

Pre-Trip #30:

RV Planning Another Adventure?? (Part Two)

***************************************

camp v. 1. to pitch or occupy a camp. 2. to live temporarily in a camp or outdoors – often used with out. 3. to take up one’s quarters : LODGE. 4. to take up one’s position : settle down.

****************************************

The first thing I did the morning after Ed and I had our little brainstorming session was to hop onto the DIS for a little lurking. I was venturing into unknown territory… the Camping at Disney board! Fortunately the research I had done when checking out RV rentals clued me in to some of the lingo and camping etiquette. As expected, I discovered that the DIS-camping community is a unique and friendly bunch. I’ll be stopping by there more frequently as our summer trip approaches. ::yes::

I looked at lots of pix of various campsites (fun!) and read opinions about Fort Wilderness and all its “loops”. Hmmm. It looked as though the preferred pet loops (those sites with full hook-ups that allowed pets and were closest to the Settlement Depot and the Marina) were in great demand. I jumped off the computer, picked up the phone, and dialed the CRO.

I drew a pleasant CM named Meghan who answered all of my newbie FW questions and was able to set us up with a ressie for Sunday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 27, checking out on Thursday morning. (BTW, I’m glad I asked if check-in time was the same as the resorts. It's not. Check-in begins at 1pm. (Check-out is the usual 11am.) Next came the tricky part, the making of special (room?) requests. It wouldn’t be a bona fide call to the CRO without those! ;) Having never camped a day in my life, I had absolutely no idea what to ask for in a campsite, other than the above. So, I just asked Meghan to make a note that we had an autistic child and would prefer a more “quiet” location if possible.

“Maybe they could give you the end of the loop,” she offered, “that may be more quiet.” I had no idea either, but she also noted on our ressie that we had an autistic child with us, so hopefully the all-powerful-site-assigner that day will be able to help us out. I would be willing to walk a bit further to the bus stop if it meant less bustle and noise around our site.

“You may want to consider renting a golf cart,” she added, “I stayed in one of the cabins recently and it really came in handy… I could hardly get my kids off of it!” “Forget the kids,” I laughed, “It’s the husbands who hog the new toy all week, I’m guessing!” She also said that the next time she and her family stayed at FW, they were going to rent an RV so they could bring their dog.

I like that; when you talk to a Disney reservationist and they tell you that they have stayed at this resort or that resort and they treat you more like a fellow WDW fan than a pesky customer that they simply put up with. (We’ve all run into a couple of those over the years, haven’t we?) It’s nice to know that the person to whom you’re entrusting your precious reservation doesn’t just work for Disney, he or she loves WDW as a guest, too. :earsboy: :earsgirl:

Regrettably, I’ll have to see how we do without the electric golf cart, though. Rental is pretty steep…around $48 per night. Despite the obvious convenience, I just cannot justify an extra $500 for a golf cart. “That trip is going to be a no-buying trip,” Ed warned. “No pins, no t-shirts, no extras!” Ah well, I’ll just have to look at it as a well-needed opportunity to burn some extra calories, preferably supplied through another Free Dining promotion!

***************************************

So whatcha got here, people is your basic trip-within-a-trip-within-a-trip report! Talk about yer mul-ti-tasking! Step right up and watch as the lovely lady attempts to juggle, not one, not two, but three WDW trip reports at the same time!!

I considered color-coding the planning for the different trips, but my posts are usually so lengthy, I like to write them out on Word and then copy/paste. Can’t do a huge chunk of color that way. Oh well. :confused3 Folks, if you start to get confused (Jordan) just let me know and I’ll try to clear up any fog!

****************************************

So tomorrow (Saturday) it’s exactly

Seven Weeks!!

...until our family trip. Nuthin’ much to do planning-wise, that’s all been done since June! Just a few things picked up here and there to go into the Disney box… toiletries, wet-wipes, rain ponchos… you know the drill.

One thing I did today was to stop at Staples Office Supply and pick up a couple of packages of the self-seal laminating sheets for my daily itinerary cards. Check. Also bought a few more sets of the roll-up space bags. Check. Love these! We can fit all our clothes in half the luggage space once the air is squeezed out of the bags!

My goal is one large rolling duffle bag and one carry-on bag per person; the space bags help us to accomplish this. I always say I’m not going to over-pack because we have the washer and dryer in the villa, but I like to be prepared for the variable November weather, so I usually wind up bringing a bit more clothing than we need. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

And even though we mail most of our souvies home at the point of purchase, there’s always the stuff that we either want to wear/use while we’re there, so I like to bring along a foldable medium-sized nylon duffle in case we need extra luggage room on the flight home.

Well, that’s the news. Now that we’re back on our regular school schedule, I no longer feel like I’m walking through Jell-O. The days are beginning to slip by pretty quickly now, thank goodness! Before you know it, we’ll be packing our space bags and making rude noises when the air gets rolled out!

:hourglass Until next time…

Kathy

Awww, you have to juggle writing about 3 trips, you poor poor thing :sad2: . I feel so sorry for you (do you sense the sarcasm here?, lol j/k).

May I ask where you got the roll-up space bags? That would be wonderful for me to use since I am the only one dragging the luggage around.

Have fun with the camping and the 3 trips in less than a year. We loved it when we went twice in 10 months.

:yay: you have an actual ressie!:yay: for your third trip planned...:cloud9: Can I come live with you?:goodvibes

:rotfl: If I could find a place for us to live next summer, I wouldn't be getting the bonus trip to FW! :rotfl:

Like I said before... I am in complete shock.
