What constitutes "activating"? I'm considering an AP but we're not going until august. Can I use the AP for hotel discounts and locking in MNSSHP passes...can I do that without "using" my AP?

activating means, going, yourself the AP card holder to be, in preson to the front gate /processing center and getting a physical AP issued.

Yes you can book AP hotel rates before you have your physical card as long as you GET the AP on your trip.
No you can't get the WOC/MSNNSP passes before hand.

Thanks Sonnyjane. Hopefully that will be the case. I just know that a few people on here mentioned that this happened to them when they went to get new passes (they were told they had to renew rather than get a new one) and I thought that was weird. While I could see for some they may want to keep their orig date and IF they gave them the discount and the old price I suppose for some that might be worth it and they might not care about losing some time but to me the whole point of letting it lapse is so I could start over. So hopefully it won't be an issue.

I know my mom let her's expire (orig her's expired in June like mine) and then she got a new one in March on our last trip. So I guess I will just have to see when I go.

I NEVER renew my AP without a lapse. The "deals" they offer are never good enough to warrant it, IMHO. I was hoping that they would give something more than $10 or $20 discount after filling out a lengthy survey a few years ago but nothing has changed. They asked about special AP parking, better food discounts, etc. but it's still the same old deal.

My last AP expired 10-18-10. I got our new AP on 12-23-10. No problem and it wasn't back dated to Oct. I have never seen the need to let me AP continue, uninterrupted.

There is one renewal option that I know of that if you renew it (even after it expires) it will go back to your previous anniversary-This is only for online renewals. This may have only been during a special deal last year, I can't remember the particulars but they have never done that if you renew (actually get a new AP) in person.

You can certainly feel free to ask, but the answer is almost assuredly no.

Why do they only allow people with certain zip codes in CA to pay monthly for their annual passers? What effect would it have on them to allow people outside the state/certain zip codes if your paying for whatever pass you want?

No one outside of disney knows. But rest assured, the Disney lawyers know.

This is what I do..I have a special ING account that I use for APs and DVC MF. I stick the money in each month and then when they come due I charge them and then pull the cash out of ING to pay the charge card to get my little cash back.

Yes your AP doesn't get activated until you use it in December. But there is no advatage to buying it this early.

I don't fully agree with no advantage, if he's spreading costs for the trip buying PHs or APs months out is a good idea. It's what I do - I'll buy 1 PH, a month later another and so on, I like to have as much of our visit prepaid as possible *including $$ on a Disney gift card for meals. Usually the only thing I pay for while we're there is our hotel, everything else was bought/paid for months ago.

Looks like my three times in one calendar year dream is a distant memory. I had to have a root canal today and my kids have some dental work this summary that will cost me a lot of my savings. Hoping now for 2 visits next year.
